My personal experience. Cheater's mind is truly unique punya they can always come up with all kind of reasons to justify what they did/doing.

Human can never change. It's a fact. We just learn to mask it better. When u tell your love one u have a problem with him/her and they proceed to give all sorts of explanation and brush it off. THey are not going to change. If they genuinely want to change they will listen and apply empathy. Give them ultimatum and force them to listen 99.9% of time will backfire on u, they will relapse and problem come back again then repeat. Took me very long time to understand this.
