Btw, I agree our food price increase a lot, but I think just a matter of time to reach HK level. Who knows after new TNB tariff + fuel subsidy removal, we will be there. Congrats Malaysia becoming low income high expenses country, managed by the "bestest" FM who can sank the currency to the lowest in history twice.

Most locals have breakfast, lunch and dinner at hawker stalls, often compare local hawker price with restaurant price overseas. Hence find local food price very affordable, which is misleading.

If compare local restaurant price with similar restaurants overseas, one would find often more expensive and poorer quality.

Between 11:30AM and 2:30PM from Monday to Friday, when hungry office workers travel in packs on the streets scouring for a meal to re-energise, the busiest restaurants in Central are not McDonald’s, sen-ryo, Samsen, and TamJai, but the hole-in-the-wall takeaway spots selling the notorious two-dish rice.

Housed in a plastic takeaway box shell, loaded with MSG, fluffy white rice, and a choice of two (or three) meat or vegetable dishes, two-dish rice can be devoured for as little as HKD28 in the city.

By one estimation made by a fervent two-dish rice researcher on the Rice with 2 Sides Facebook group, boasting more than 168,000 followers, there are approximately 578 restaurants in Hong Kong serving the affordable meal.

Whilst not a new culinary trend (its roots took shape back in the 1950s), two-dish rice found immense popularity during the pandemic once restaurants were forced to shutter at night and owners’ livelihoods were hit, justifying more affordable dining options.

The dining phenomenon is seemingly one of the last remaining vestiges of the forgotten pandemic in today’s Hong Kong – and it is celebrated too. Just look at any lunchtime line at a two-dish rice shop on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, or New Territories.

The ballooning adoration of this salty and filling meal is indicative of greater trends occurring in the industry and throughout the Hong Kong economy as a whole: Hong Kongers have less money to spend than prior to the pandemic and are looking for quality and value when dining out.

To the question posed in the title, the answer is complicated. Affordable meals are a necessity for the city’s less well-off, a helping hand for accessing nutrition to ensure a healthy body. The cost of a two-dish rice meal ranges anywhere from under HKD30 to HKD60 at the highest. The food is cooked fresh, and many options are available for each and every taste.

One needs to compare hongkie income and rental. Expensive menu price is largely due to expensive rental and labour cost.

Malaysian is poor by comparison, find everything outside bolehland expensive.

Most hk eatery depending on high table turnover to sustain, couldn't blame them. Almost every restaurant food is better than the best in kl.

I am not talking about eatary but proper hk restaurant. There are many HK cooking techniques, ingredients, etc Malaysian still couldn't master, don't use or don't practice.

How many Malaysian restaurants use dried octopus or cutter fish in their stock or soup?

HK portion is indeed bigger. Not western country big but big enough for a proper meal.

Any of their meal would make me full without the need to order seconds.

In Malaysia? If you order chicken rice, any type of noodles, mee rebus or whatever, you definitely need to add on something, either a snack, a second meal, or even pastry or else you will go hungry before dinner time.

Also, in HK, they always comes with a drink or soup during lunch hour.

**Item** **Hong Kong (HK\$)** **Malaysia (HK\$ Equivalent)**
----------------------- -------------------- ------------------------------
Rent (1BR outside city) 13,000 – 16,000 2,500 – 3,500 (RM1,500–2,000)
Fast food meal 50 – 70 12 – 20
Public transport 3 – 20/trip 1.50 – 4/trip
Basic groceries 2,000 – 3,500 700 – 1,200

That is why the debt is high here because we have a lot of subsidies. So the hong kong people are definitely more hardworking in order to survive.

Here can work Grab senang lenang still can survive cheap rental and petrol very enjoyable with motor or Axia.

Hong Kong and Singapore have no fuel subsidy for the normal peasant like us. So either you work hard or you suffer. Unlike here. I see the grab guy even fetch her gf to deliver food for him so happy.
