Is it normal for a soldering iron to turn red?

Not normal at all. Not mere soldering iron, but the whole product retarded. Throw away for scrap metal better before it explodes in your face. Invest more in a regulated soldering iron which should last a life time without such nonsense. RM200+- should be good enough
