Thunder dun hit, lightning causes the surge in the electrical equipment. Yr house/condo does not use an effective lightning rod with proper earthing.

If direct strike the arc will just jump. A mere mm gap in switch does look like any other conductor to a 3000 kV arc

If the strike is very near, your house and internal wiring itself will generate surge via induction.

Lain kali masa ribut petir, cabut plug terus. Kalau nasib baik, hanya fius dekat plug tu jer yg rosak. Ganti fius baru few ringgit. Kalau nasib tak baik, electric circuit hangus, TV boleh buang

TV and router kena fried few times despite having copper rod, when pasang got test resistance value all within range. Didn't install lighting arrestor, installed sod at dB instead + lightning isolator at TV and router. Hopefully won't kena again 😂
