Disheartening that reading still not a culture in Malaysia, says PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to read more, lamenting the nation’s poor reading culture which he said remains far from ideal despite ongoing efforts.

He said this reality is at odds with the aspirations of the MADANI government, which is anchored on the values of conviction and a deep appreciation for knowledge.

“Reading has not yet become a culture in our country, and to me, that is disheartening. When we speak of a MADANI nation, it is one that is rooted in conviction and love for knowledge,” he said.

How can we claim to love knowledge if we only rely on speeches, opinions... sometimes filled with insults, but not grounded in knowledge?

“Reading just four lines or listening to two-minute rants on social media and forming conclusions, this world is challenging and it demands individuals with deep knowledge,” he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 here today.

Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Dr Hazami Jahari and PBAKL 2025 organising chairman Mohd Khair Ngadiron.

The prime minister, however, expressed optimism that the reading culture could be cultivated, noting that the PBAKL 2025, which began on May 23, had received an encouraging response, recording a total of 1.8 million visitors.

Citing the success of developed nations, Anwar said such countries advanced because their people possessed deep knowledge and understanding.

“Look at developed countries, there are none that have progressed while lacking knowledge,” he said.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said that efforts to elevate Malaysia as a great nation in the future must be anchored in building a knowledgeable society that values the reading culture.

He said that in the pursuit of success, there are still political leaders, professionals, technocrats and intellectuals who overlook the development of culture.

“In the next five or ten years, we want to elevate Malaysia as a great nation in our region, and to do that, we must be prepared to compete, to work and to truly read.

“Just look at the political and economic discourse in our country… it is not based on knowledge or reading. It is driven by sentiment, anger, hatred, judgment... even religion is turned into a platform (for political gain),” he said.

As such, the prime minister challenged students, influencers and parents to promote the strengthening of intellectual foundations to realise the goal of uplifting the nation’s stature.

PBAKL, themed ‘Buku: Membaca, Memimpin’ (Books: Read, Lead), concluded today, offering a wide variety of events and is regarded as one of the largest book fairs in Southeast Asia.

No need to read. Readings are just a sorry excuse of boomers that can't keep up with technology. We strawberry generation just need to pandai prompt chatgpt and copy paste wholesale.

The library I went only had 2 families in them on a weekend

I don't think the issue is with library location

Best security measure for kids iPad access is physical books

When the only thing they have is books, then the most interesting thing they can access is the books.

but you guide them to it also right?

u put the whole library in front of you, if you dont ask them to go there, most likely they will do something else too

Perhaps gov should consider to introduce subsidy for books?

Did Pak Anwar knows how much is the cost of 1 fiction book at MPH and Kinokuniya?

The cheapest book that u can get after discount is RM44++. Mostly starting RM50++ for 1 fiction book.

How the hell u want to encourage people to read?

I know that 2nd hand bookstore, library are exist. But it's not easily accessible and available for a lot of people.

not all peoples have time to stay in library for hours. also selection are mostly limited in library.
casual topics for reading might be okay, but if you are looking for niche subjects most library wont have the books anyway.

It's never about book
Reading itself is most Malaysian's kryptonite

It doesn't have to be just books...it can be article or anything online
Since when you ever see anyone read before....they rather go TikTok go watch useless stuff
*
You're not wrong, but it's not their fault. I learned to love books because my dad used to bring me to book fairs and the public library.
Kids these days are not exposed or given enough chance to bury themselves into books because the public libraries are often lacking. Even at schools, libraries are only open during recess time. If more bookstores are accessible to more kids B40 and M40 kids, we might be able to cultivate the reading culture.

From my own experiences, trying to buy books for my kids is challenging.
2 of my kids love reading Malay and English novels, but its too expensive for them me to buy. At most, I can only afford to get 1 book AFTER they've finished reading the last book I bought them. Every time we go to a mall, we'd always enter a bookstore and browse around for offer bins or discounted books because everything else is too bloody expensive. Either that, or I simply get them second hand books from books and bobs or buy them off Shopee.

Reading habits should be nurtured since childhood and parents should lead by example. I as someone who grows up playing outside, watch tv and video games finds it hard to enjoy books.

I have been trying to change that. Bought some books last year and have been trying to at least read a page/chapter or two per day to build the habit. So far it's been working okay, managed to finish a four books and the one I am currently reading is almost finish.

Oh and the price of the book is also a barrier for most people. It's like RM70- RM90 for good books.

Three detained, 11 motorcycles seized in Miri’s ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’

Eleven motorcycles seized and three local men were detained in Op Samseng Jalanan held on May 31 around Miri city and along Jalan Miri Bypass. – Police photo

MIRI (June 2): Eleven motorcycles were seized and three local men detained during Op Samseng Jalanan, a road safety operation carried out around Miri city and along Jalan Miri Bypass on May 31.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, in a statement today, said the operation was conducted between 11pm and 3am by a team of traffic police from the Miri District Police Headquarters.

The offences including expired vehicle licences, driving without a licence, structural modifications, modified exhausts, missing side mirrors, missing or fancy registration numbers, failure to display the ‘P’ (probationary) plate, and faulty motorcycle brakes.

“Three local men, aged 16, 21 and 25, were inspected and detained on suspicion of committing offences under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“If convicted, all suspects will be charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a minimum fine of RM5,000 up to RM10,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence,” ACP Mohd Farhan said in the statement.

Additionally, 11 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act for documentation purposes.

ACP Mohd Farhan urged the public to report any street racing or road hooliganism by contacting Traffic Investigation Officer Inspector Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan at 018-952 9957 or 085-430 479, or by visiting the nearest police station.

He added that such operations will continue periodically, advising road users—especially motorcyclists—to ride responsibly and avoid illegal street racing, modifying their vehicles, and not gather by the roadside in a manner that causes traffic congestion or create noise disturbances that disrupt public peace as negligence will pose a danger to themselves and other road users.

dont talk about read books la.
books are long, required commitment, & u can argued that it's an outdated medium.
also dont say current gen z, gen alpha, that has short attention span due to generation brought up by tablet & phones.

sometimes in restaurant, they will hav "special" menu sitting straight right on the table.
a lot of the time, it mentioned some freebies, ie; birthday month complimentary dessert, discount for doing survey/review, or most often freebies/complimentary if paid using certain card.

most of the time, nobody even glance at it.

No nid libraries.

One of the perks of the 21st century is ebooks/audiobooks.

There are enough ebooks out there to last multiple life times.

Forget about books: look at how many times /k just read the headlines and don't read the content and ask questions that were answered in the text body

M'sans tak reti baca punya. Easier to complain that insurance agent "cheat people" when they themselves don't read the details. Hantam projects when their "criticisms" have been addressed in the project documentation.

It doesn't help that in Malaysia information needs to be gatekeeped

I'm a book buying junkie and I run around most bookstores every week just to check out new stock. I can tell you majority of the reading material is not even close to useful.

It may be good for learning English or grammar, but it's no where close to actually gaining any field knowledge that could help elevate your learning skills.

Only basher and Kinokunya offer some really nice books to upgrade your creative and mechanical skills but those books are rm160 and above. Way beyond affordable level.

National library is a joke. Public Library out of 100 books maybe 1 to 2 nice book. 2nd hand bookstore is better and finding treasures sometimes. Use to like book excess in the early years but this days they grab too many pleasure reading common books and not many other categories of book anymore. Price is still fair but mostly time burning books.

So with majority of the books that only provide literacy value and not critical thinking... How abang nuar expect us to "upgrade" Trough reading? It's like judging base on the surface of the water without knowing there is water current beneath.

There is still a lot of good books that are not banned

I don't think we're missing much having "DARLINGKU MR. COLD MAFIA", "TUAN ZIYAD: FORBIDDEN LOVE", and "KOLEKSI PUISI MASTURBASI" being restricted from publication in malaysia

Also the worst types are those that bury their respectable local degrees with harvard boot camp short courses

UTM or TAR is respectable why blemish your cv with a mickey mouse course with a sexy institution tag in front. They won't even allow you to call them your Alma mater
*
Most of this course is not even operated by the actual University staff, but by a 3rd party service provider. Their only involvement is just to "curate" the syllabus, which is mainly provided and arranged by a 3rd party service provider, and also serving multiple institution.

QUOTE(haya @ Jun 2 2025, 09:05 AM)

It is driven by sentiment, anger, hatred, judgment... even religion is turned into a platform (for political gain),” he said.

yerp, reading is not our culture.

As such, the prime minister challenged students, influencers and parents to promote the strengthening of intellectual foundations to realise the goal of uplifting the nation’s stature.

PBAKL, themed ‘Buku: Membaca, Memimpin’ (Books: Read, Lead), concluded today, offering a wide variety of events and is regarded as one of the largest book fairs in Southeast Asia.

go to bookxcess for cheaper books. There is one in midvalley that is almost always empty and well stocked and most importantly, cheap! Like RM25 per book cheap. My entire Asimov titles were bought from there, and none of those books could be found in popular or MPH.

Popular bookstores, wait for their sales which can happen every now and then

I think most importantly is we ourselves need to know who are the authors who are worth reading, that has withstood the test of time and still be a good read 50 - 100 years later. Don Quixote was published in 1600's, and still a book worth reading 400 years later, and its less than RM40 at any time at any book store.

If you're looking at RM50 books and above, its almost always the new books. Wait a year and the paperback versions would be on sale for sure

Also try second hand books. Have bought books from Books and Bobs and the book conditions are great.

I have a collection of books, and almost all of them are bought on sale, even the murakami and kazuo titles. You just need to be patient; and know what books you are going for.
