The land, which Gamuda had acquired for RM424.4 million in December 2024, will be used for a major data centre project, with Gamuda set to oversee RM1 billion worth of development. The company this week announced it has entered into an agreement to build and lease a data center with Google-affiliated Pearl Computing Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Raiden APAC Pte. Ltd. Under the agreement, Sime subsidiary SDP EBP II will build and lease data center facilities and associated structures in Elmina Business Park Phase 2 to Pearl Computing. The initial lease will be for 20 years, with two five-year extension options. The total value of rent payable over the initial term of the lease is estimated to be up to RM5.6 billion ($1.25bn). Sime first announced plans to move into developing data centers earlier this year, with Pearl set to lease a 49-acre site in Elmina Park. That first data center is set for a 2026 completion date. ... . This post has been edited by lurkingaround: May 12 2025, 10:29 PM |

Malaysia Google data centre will be build here in PD instead of Elmina Selangor.
Why PD, A.nearer to international submarine cable s landing point. B.Near to water source, can use sea water after desalination for cooling purposes. C.Near to Tuanku Jaafar Power Station (TNB) at PD. |

QUOTE(zerorating @ May 12 2025, 07:44 PM) Google is building a large data center in Port Dickson, Malaysia, as part of a wider US$2 billion investment in the country's digital infrastructure. This data center, to be developed by Gamuda DC Infrastructure, will be operational by the fourth quarter of 2028. Additionally, Google has a data center under construction in Elmina Business Park, Sungai Buloh, which is set to be completed in early 2026. Elmina Business Park Data Center: Google's first data center in Malaysia is being built in Elmina Business Park, Elmina, Selangor, with construction completed in early 2026. This data center is part of a US$2 billion investment by Google in the country. Port Dickson Data Center: Google is also constructing a hyperscale data center in Port Dickson, about 90 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with Gamuda DC Infrastructure. The treatment plant for this facility is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027, while the storage facility is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2028. So I believe the one at Elmina will be act as warehouse, DR cold site. The one at PD is hyperscale DC. Hyperscale DC is more bigger than normal DC. It can host high numbers of server, storage, networking and can scale up according to demand. |

QUOTE(Hobbez @ May 12 2025, 07:53 PM) You need to think a little bit more. Think of a data center as a giant brain that stores and processes massive amounts of information for the internet, businesses, and online services. Every time you watch a YouTube video, send an email, or search on Google, that request is handled by powerful computers housed in these data centers. What is actually going on in all these "data centers"? Why do they need so much resources/land/energy for a "data center"? Until now it isn't clear what are they doing in these data centers... Here's what's actually going on inside: - **Storage & Processing:** Data centers are filled with thousands (or even millions) of servers, which are basically specialized computers storing websites, apps, and digital content. - **Networking:** These servers communicate with each other at lightning speeds, ensuring smooth internet browsing, cloud storage, and other services. - **Security:** They have strict protections to keep sensitive data safe—both physically and digitally—with backup power, firewalls, and cybersecurity measures. Why do they need so much **land, energy, and resources**? - **Space for Servers:** These facilities hold thousands of high-powered machines stacked in rows. - **Cooling Systems:** Servers generate a LOT of heat, so advanced cooling systems (fans, water cooling, even AI-driven optimizations) are required to prevent overheating. - **Power Consumption:** Running these machines 24/7 requires enormous electricity usage, often powered by traditional grids or sustainable sources like solar or hydro. - **Redundancy & Backup:** To prevent downtime, data centers have backup power supplies and multiple copies of stored data. As more people rely on cloud computing, AI, and streaming services, data centers continue to expand. Many companies are now focusing on **energy-efficient solutions**, like building underwater data centers or using renewable energy to reduce their footprint. Data centers are like digital highways ensuring everything runs smoothly online! |

Datacentres preferred locations used to be mild climate countries such as Sandinavia and Iceland. We are a tropical climate country where average daily temperatures usually hit over 30 degrees C which makes cooling even more challenging. Even in US where places have winter climates when it turns dry summer it can pose a threat to water supplies. We're talking about highly populated area such as PD? |

QUOTE(zerorating @ May 12 2025, 08:00 PM) cold site? lel any active data center can be used for disaster recovery purpose. anyway they just buy the land, doesnt necessary they will build something there. at the moment that pd data center are just speculation. From my understanding; You're right that any active data center can be used for disaster recovery, (hot site) but the term "cold site" refers to a specific type of disaster recovery setup. A cold site is essentially a backup location that has the necessary infrastructure (like power, networking, and space) but does not have active servers or data running. This makes cold sites cheaper but slower to get up and running compared to other disaster recovery options. |

QUOTE(Hobbez @ May 12 2025, 07:53 PM) You need to think a little bit more. Heard of the recent news Google in investing in Nuclear Power Generation? What is actually going on in all these "data centers"? Why do they need so much resources/land/energy for a "data center"? Until now it isn't clear what are they doing in these data centers... Why do you think in America they usually build those data centres in less densely populated towns and remoter areas? Even SG is considering going nuclear in future to power their modern datacentres. They're relieving some of the future expansions to Malaysia because they already foresee something which our local politicians can't? |

QUOTE(petpenyubobo @ May 12 2025, 08:04 PM) Datacentres preferred locations used to be mild climate countries such as Sandinavia and Iceland. This is why at some places, data centres use sea water for cooling processes instead of tap water. We are a tropical climate country where average daily temperatures usually hit over 30 degrees C which makes cooling even more challenging. Even in US where places have winter climates when it turns dry summer it can pose a threat to water supplies. We're talking about highly populated area such as PD? Within the data centres compound, they have sea water desalination treatment infrastructure. |

The sites which they used for previous datacentres are those coastal areas such as Iceland to take advantage of the icy cold seawaters. |

QUOTE(petpenyubobo @ May 12 2025, 08:14 PM) Our seawater is warm and on hot days it's like taking hot shower! They have huge water tanks reserves which are either stored indoor or underground. It helps to bring down the temperature of water to room temperature. The sites which they used for previous datacentres are those coastal areas such as Iceland to take advantage of the icy cold seawaters. So the process will be like this; a. Pump seawater into those water tanks reserves. b. Once reach suitable temp, from water tanks to desalination plant. c. From desalination plant, goes to the DC for cooling. |

Good luck to both Selangor and NS in future for their state sizes and resources, water is going to become a huge problem for their citizens if they do not plan carefully.
If a large state such as Sarawak with plenty of resources maybe it's still feasible, but these 2 states with history of water shortages/cuts. Wish them well. |

That’s what Singapore newater tech is all about. Not cheap . Israeli technology. Actually Spore is already self sufficient in terms of of water supply but since they can get cheaper source form Mesia, they use Mesia water. They also have Batam supply as well.So the process will be like this; a. Pump seawater into those water tanks reserves. b. Once reach suitable temp, from water tanks to desalination plant. c. QUOTE(mick84 @ May 12 2025, 05:02 PM) Wondering how a foreign company can own land in Malaysia. Then Panasonic factories and Intel Penang how they set up? Didn't realise that after all these years Panasonic Malaysia and Intel Penang don't use any land in Malaysia.Later atok no happy, instead sell to type C, now sell to mat salleh. |

AI Overview
+44 Using a desalination plant for data center cooling can be a sustainable and cost-effective solution, particularly in areas with limited freshwater resources. The desalination process produces clean water, which can then be used to cool the servers and electronic equipment within the data center, and it can be a part of a broader strategy to ensure water supply reliability. Here's a more detailed look at how this works: Data Center Heat Generation: Data centers generate significant heat from servers and electronic devices. This heat needs to be dissipated to maintain optimal operating temperatures and prevent equipment failure. Desalination as a Water Source: Desalination plants convert seawater into freshwater, providing a reliable and potentially limitless source of water for data center cooling. Cooling Systems: The freshwater from the desalination plant can be used in various cooling systems, such as: Chilled Water Systems: The water can be chilled and circulated through the data center, absorbing heat from servers and equipment. Evaporative Cooling: The water can be used in evaporative cooling systems, where the evaporation process absorbs heat and reduces the temperature. Water Reuse and Conservation: The heated water from the cooling systems can be reused in other parts of the data center or other facilities, further enhancing efficiency. Sustainability Benefits: Using a desalination plant for data center cooling can help reduce reliance on municipal water supplies, promote water conservation, and reduce the environmental impact of the data center. Cost-Effectiveness: The initial investment in a desalination plant may be significant, but the long-term costs of using desalinated water for cooling can be lower than relying on traditional cooling methods, especially in areas with high water demand and rising water costs. Benefits of Using a Desalination Plant for Data Center Cooling: Reliable Water Source: Provides a consistent and reliable supply of water, even during droughts or periods of high demand. Reduced Water Consumption: Can help reduce the overall water footprint of the data center, promoting water conservation and sustainability. Cost-Effective: Can be a more cost-effective solution than relying on municipal water supplies in areas with high water costs. Environmental Benefits: Reduces the strain on local water resources and promotes water reuse and conservation. Examples of Data Centers Using Desalinated Water: Microsoft's Underwater Data Center: Microsoft's experimental underwater data center uses seawater for cooling. Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS is using reclaimed wastewater for cooling at 20 data center locations. |
