FYI.
Malaysia Chinese ancestors doesn't speak Mandarin.
Mandarin is only learn in schools.
And just recently becomes important, cause of its commercial value for Non-CCP people.

Nope, according to some wumao here you are a banana if you can't speak Mandarin and read/write simplified Chinese. Even if you speak any other Chinese dialects fluently and can read/write traditional Chinese you are still a banana.

Older generation mid life Gen Y millennials yes. They attended SK schools back then when China was still Communist closed up country.

Back then even upto mid 200x, China just recently emerged from slumber. Where got people speak Mandarin so widely like today. Depending on which city in Malaysia they only learn how to speak Chinese through casual conversation with family and friends.

They malu to speak because not fluent and scared being insulted.

Got still bank officers/manyzers I met before only spoke Hokkien to me when I tried engaging conversation with them in Mandarin.

It is normal for millennials, Gen-X and boomers in this country including the Chinese diaspora in SG, Australia and even USA.

Many successful CEOs also like that can only speak in dialects which is used in the place where they grew up and English.
