Malaysia is not free from earthquake, particularly Ranau (2015 KK 18 deaths) and Kunak (6.6 record 1923 a month before Japan Great Kanto) incident were well documented and reported.

Peninsula had been hit before but well forgotten overtime.
In 1922, two earthquake 5.4 and 5.0 hit Kota Tinggi Johor with tremor felt in Batu Pahat.
As recent as 2007 thru 2008 few 2-5-3.5 earthquake hit Bukit Tinggi area.

The overall risk for peninsula remain low but critical for area with high rise residential buildings especially those north of Klang Valley sit along the KL fault line.

Should worry more about volcano.
KL is the nearest big cities from the largest volcano in the world.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians should remain vigilant for earthquakes even though it is outside the Pacific Ring of Fire, says an expert.

Institute of Geology Malaysia president Abd Rasid Jaapar said that while Malaysia is not situated along the collision zone of major tectonic plates - reducing the risk of major earthquakes - several minor tremors have been recorded in certain areas over recent decades.

"Earthquakes are unpredictable in both location and magnitude. The risk exists - for instance, Bukit Tinggi once experienced a 3.8-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale. However, at present, there is no significant earthquake risk in Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.

"If we claim there is no risk at all, that would be inaccurate. Natural events like earthquakes are unpredictable, so we must remain cautious, but there is no need for undue concern.

The risk is notably higher in Sabah, as it is closer to active seismic zones, where earthquakes are typically triggered by the collision of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate, as well as movements along local active faults,” he told Bernama.

On Saturday (March 30), the United States Geological Survey reported that a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, at a depth of 10km. Just minutes later, an aftershock measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit the same area.

The tremors from both earthquakes were also felt in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, in Thailand, and in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Historically, Malaysia has experienced strong earthquakes, particularly in Sabah, where quakes with magnitudes between 6.0 and 6.3 on the Richter scale were recorded in 1923, 1958, 1976, and 2015. In Sarawak, the strongest recorded tremor was a 5.3-magnitude earthquake in 1994.

Peninsular Malaysia has also witnessed several earthquakes, with epicentres in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang; Kenyir Dam, Terengganu; Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan; and Manjung and Temenggor in Perak.

These quakes, ranging from magnitudes 1.6 to 4.6, occurred in 1984, 1985, 1987, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2013.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Bumiputera Contractors Association (PKBM) president Datuk Azman Yusoff said that over the past decade, nearly all new high-rise buildings in Malaysia have been constructed using earthquake-resistant materials and designs.

He said that the government, through the Department of Standards Malaysia, has established earthquake-resistant building codes, including the Malaysia National Annex to Eurocode 8: Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance - Part 1: General rules, seismic actions and rules for buildings.

He explained that one of the key elements emphasised in Eurocode 8 is the use of spring isolators, which enable residential buildings, skyscrapers, and shopping malls to detach their foundations from ground movements. This flexibility helps absorb seismic energy, reducing the risk of structural collapse during earthquakes.

Meanwhile, National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) director-general Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said that the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) remains on high alert, regularly conducting disaster response exercises, particularly in high-risk areas in Sabah.

"Despite Malaysia’s location outside the Pacific Ring of Fire, Sabah, especially Mount Kinabalu, remains the most vulnerable area in the event of an earthquake. That is why Smart frequently conducts drills in the Mount Kinabalu region,” he said.

He added that SMART is internationally recognised by the United Nations (UN) for its world-class expertise in collapsed-building rescues, and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said that MetMalaysia currently operates 80 seismic sensors, to monitor and detect earthquake activity across Malaysia and the surrounding region.

Back in 90s cikgu sekolah used to teach ayam Malaysia aman tiada bencana alam seperti gunung berapi, gempa bumi, puting beliung dan tsunami..

Fast forwards 2000s
Gempa bumi-> KK
Tsunami-> Penang
Tornado-> Sekinchan
Volcano pending but ayam think Sabah still has 1 active volcano!

Camp will be safest cause single storey house also can collapse.

High rise has deep foundation but single/double storey maybe none … so sweet spot maybe 4-5 floors flats, got foundation but not too high …

this shit is random event. if its your time then nothing can be done.

if want to mitigate risk, its not just about built quality. but the location as well.

i'd avoid home at slope or near slope cause earthquake also can trigger landslide.
