dont think Malaysia has any fab plant.

Silterra in Kedah is pretty outdated to produce AI chip.

maybe intel gona be producing their core ultra cpu(with npu) in Malaysia...

don't think so, building a fab is very expensive. and Intel already invested a lot of money building new gen fab in USA.

QUOTE(premier239 @ Mar 8 2025, 05:15 PM)
Penang, 8th (Reporter) – Minister of Digital Communications, Gobind Singh, pointed out that Malaysia will be introducing domestically manufactured artificial intelligence (AI) chips in the next two to three months.

He made this statement after attending the launch ceremony of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) AI Hub, AI Nexus (MAIN), on Saturday, where he spoke to the press. He stated that AI has an impact on all sectors, including the semiconductor industry. The department had discussions with the industry today, mainly to help them transition towards artificial intelligence.

He said that Malaysia’s AI Hub will focus on several semiconductor industries and start discussions about the basic needs of the semiconductor industry for artificial intelligence.

“We can see from this discussion that they have already started producing their own AI chips.”

He is confident, as envisioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar, that Malaysia-made AI chips will be launched within the next two to three months.

The Chairman of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA), Datuk Seri Wong Siew Tai, expressed hope that the announcement of domestically manufactured AI chips, particularly those designed in Penang, will be made later this year.

In response, the Co-Chairman of the Malaysia AI Hub, Chong Wen Cheng, mentioned that they are about to launch domestically designed and manufactured AI chips and revealed that they have already identified their first user, the Tech Dome in Penang.

On the other hand, Gobind Singh emphasized in his earlier speech that domestic semiconductor companies must make artificial intelligence a core business strategy, maintain Malaysia's global leadership in the semiconductor industry through technological innovation, and urged the industry to nurture local AI leaders to build a strong domestic AI ecosystem.

“To become a global AI-driven semiconductor hub, we must not only apply AI technology but also create technology.”

He said that this is a critical moment for Malaysian semiconductor companies to lead AI-driven innovation and must develop AI chip solutions that meet industry needs to enhance the country's global competitiveness.

Additionally, he proposed three key strategies: (1) Assist local semiconductor companies in expanding into emerging markets such as Brazil and India through the Global Acceleration and Innovation Network (GAIN) program by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC); (2) Support local and multinational proof-of-concept projects through the Global Testbed Program; (3) Bring in cross-sector AI enterprises and technological capabilities to strengthen the MAIN platform.

He added that the Malaysian government is committed to supporting the digital transformation of enterprises and established the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) in December last year as the central agency to drive the country’s AI agenda. The establishment of NAIO aims to provide necessary support, resources, and guidance to help the semiconductor industry effectively utilize AI.

He stated that with the launch of MAIN, it marks an important milestone for Malaysia’s semiconductor and AI industries, providing a collaborative platform for semiconductor manufacturers, design companies, and ecosystem participants to integrate AI into their operations and research.

He also called on semiconductor companies, AI developers, research institutions, and policymakers to deepen their collaboration and jointly respond to the global transformation of the semiconductor industry.

Furthermore, Wong Siew Tai stated that artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a concept for the future, but a reality today. How Malaysia accepts and applies AI will determine the country's position in global industrial competition.

He said that the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) AI Hub, AI Nexus (MAIN), will operate around three core objectives: AI innovation and research, AI technology application, and industry networking and collaboration. These key objectives are highly aligned with the needs and opportunities of the semiconductor industry.

“MAIN is not just an initiative, but a vision that requires action.”

He urged all members of the semiconductor industry to actively seize this opportunity, lead by example, and demonstrate how AI can drive innovation, growth, and sustainable development, making Malaysia's semiconductor industry more competitive.

Among the attendees were the Chairman of Penang's Committee on Basic Infrastructure, Transportation, and Digital Affairs, Zairil Khir Johari.
