Best Place to Exchange Coins/Shillings? Need Advice!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been keeping a heavy stash of coins for years, and today I suddenly thought—maybe it’s time to exchange them for cash. Where would be the best place to do this? Here are some options I’m considering:

1. Kopitiam – Do they usually accept coin exchanges?

2. Banks – Are there any fees or restrictions?

3. Shops that need coins – Do businesses like convenience stores or supermarkets accept large amounts of coins?

4. Others – Any other good places I should check?

I’d really appreciate your advice on the most convenient and hassle-free way to exchange my coins. Thanks in advance!

Most kopitiams, mamaks will still appreciate you paying in coins say RM3-5 each time although their need has reduced with the prevalence of eWallets

Use some paper to roll twenty coins into cylindrical shape and mark them. Then take them with you whenever you go out.

Banks you trust that has a Coin Deposit Machine. Can google for location.

Why I say trust? Cos got 1 bank that a few of my relatives used that consistently shortchange the amount they deposit
(they roughly pre-counted the coins before passing it over at the bank, always get told the amount to be RM50-100 lesser than they initially counted).

Anecdotal, but 1 is an accident, 2 is a coincidence, 3+ is a pattern.

Edit: To answer your question, no fees that I know of.

If you got Maybank account then you can go to selected Maybank branch for coin deposit into your account, not all of the Maybank branch has the coin machine to deposit.

You prepare your bag of coins and give it to the staff, the machine will sort and count it, then the staff will give you the paper how much is it and usually max 1-2 days will deposit in your account. Mine was less than RM100 worth of coins and it entered within a day.

The last time I went to Maybank main branch at PJ two years ago they said they only accept small amount of coins because machine got some problem, not sure about right now, you can always give a call to make sure before you go.

Target kampung baru kopitiam. Lots of old folks so they still need coins.

How much do you have? If less than RM500, that's not a lot.

kocek subang parade

just sharing the experience with kocek

8 march 2025 (saturday )- didnt do any appointment, go subang parade around 2pm, the staff is friendly. Help count the coin with the coin machine, but she reject some old looking / unusable coin , then i have to open MyPay app to do all the admin work while she teach me, the whole process took 20 minute depending how much coin u have , told me 3 - 4 day working day to see the amount in the bank

10 March 2025 to 13 March 2025 - didnt see the amount bank in yet, so i sent email enquire at 13 March 2025 when the amount will bank in, the email reply assured that they will follow up because it is under process of bank pending approval

14 March 2025 ( friday ) - finally see the amount at around 7pm ish.

Time estimation : 6 days

experience : 4.5/5 , okay normal

advice : recommend to do appointment

ayam sad the amount not even 500.

do you want to order in big bulk? For example maybe RM300 worth of coins per month/week

try giving a call to your local banks first see whether they do sell the service for a fee, some banks do that but they need order 1 day in advance

Make appointment or in my case walked in to another Maybank branch (USJ, got 2 branches there, go to the corner one that have machine) after I call them to confirm machine is working. Confirmed working and when I reached (Within 30 mins to 1 hour), machine broken but they have called repairman, waited for 1 hour for it to back working.

Sometimes the machine rosak during coin counting because user just do bulk depositing and cause the machine to malfunction.

If you are using the machine, make sure you depositing in orderly manner and take any foreign object that you might have. Foreign coins nvm as machine will reject, if machine reject legit coins, keep depositing until machine accept.

More tips:

1) If you depositing half way and machine malfunction then you need to wait or go back another day. This happen to the user after I done depositing.

2) Once machine done and print out receipt, go to counter to fill up details and will be deposit to your bank account within 2-3 working days. In my case, I got MBB account and reflected in 2 days.
