Hi all,

I am buying a used bike with its road tax expired. I have no experience on buying used bike previously.
the seller said he can just do his part to transfer ownership via mysikap online, and I need to go to JPJ to complete the ownership transfer.
But as I know the in order for me to complete the ownership transfer, as the new owner I need to purchase the new motor insurance first before approaching JPJ. My questions:

1. do the above process I understand correctly? otherwise please correct me.

2. can i purchase the new insurance online? I tried to get quotation of insurance in Myeg by submitting my NRIC and the plate no. but the system responded that the vehicle information is unable to be retrieved.

Thank you.

from my recent experience

1. complete transfer ownership to you.

2. take the new geran with your name on it to buy insurance

3. renew roadtax online

If not yet transfer ownership, cannot renew online as your IC and plate no not the same in the system.

You need to use the owner ic and plate no to renew but if you do tis when transfer ownership the insurance will become invalid as not in your name.

Too much hassle so transfer ownership first.

Thanks for your advice.
Means I did misunderstand the procedure. I thought previously was to have valid insurance first before the ownership transferring process could be done.
So the actual is I do not need any valid insurance first to complete tukar name in JPJ ya?

The last time i did transfer iirc is the jpj officer at the counter ask for insurance first before can transfer.

You cannot buy it online bcs the bike is not in your name but can you can buy from the insurance agent at jpj. There are a few of them open table outside the counter office.

This was 10 years ago so the procedure may or may not have changed.

Bought a used motorcycle directly from owner as well, did the name transfer with owner directly at another motorcycle shop for a fee since we wanted to skip the hassle of going to JPJ.

The name can be transferred without doing road tax and insurance.

Once name transfer is done you can get your own insurance and road tax. I also recently found out as well since the bike I bought is more than 20 years old, the shop couldn't do my insurance for me, they said their system cannot do, so I had to do it separately myself through another agent.
