Guys, my S22 (base model) is now showing pink vertical line on the left side of screen. I bought it in April 2022. Never dropped it – the screen is otherwise in a flawless condition.
I went to Samsung express service center. They claim it cannot be replaced FOC.
This is a premium phone, how can the screen kaput so quickly? I'm not the only one - it seems many on the S20/21/22 lines have experienced it!
I updated the Oct and Nov updates back to back on 16th December 2024, but only saw the pink line this morning when I woke up.
I don’t use fast charging – only charge using Apple iPad’s 20W charger. I also turn on battery saver to conserve the shitty battery life.
I was going to upgrade to the S25, but unlikely now as even my previous S10e suffered display issues towards the end (the screen would have a yellowish tint - luckily it was intermittent and wasn't present when I performed the trade-in).

QUOTE(PJng @ Dec 20 2024, 02:58 PM) Enough to raise awareness about their shoddy screens. It's unacceptable. I have been on the S10e as my first flagship phone, and then S22. Was planning to get S25. Not again.

Usually if there is evidence of a manufacturing defect, as it seems to be the case here, the manufacturer covers the fault.
What's Samsung Malaysia doing about it?

QUOTE(ry8128 @ Dec 20 2024, 03:03 PM) It's common issue. U need to wait and pray hopefully they will replace it for free, like how I replace mine for free earlier this year How did you do it? I just from their express service center, they said no such thing. I read about it on Lowyat before going there.

All in all, super disappointed in Samsung. I like their smaller phones. But they are hastening their downfall. It's not just me, there are hundreds of thousands impacted globally. If a phone can't even last for 3 years with good care, what's the point of buying it?
I can accept if it was either due to user error, or due to isolated incident. This can happen to anyone at anytime, when you buy any electronic device.
But the issue here is, this problem seems to be reported all over the world, in situations where people haven't dropped or damaged their phones. It is, by all accounts, a manufacturing defect.
Might seem like a small problem, but I'm sure the end of Samsung is near. The death knell is not accomodating impacted customers.
Do they think people like us will buy another one of their phones? Do they not realise, that we will tell everyone and anyone we know, about not buying Samsung's phones?

I even enquired about the trade in value to their S24 while waiting. They said without pink line, I can get RM900, but with pink line I can get max RM225.
What the hell? They even penalise the trade-in value to their own phone! Due to a bloody manufacturing defect!

QUOTE(ry8128 @ Dec 20 2024, 03:28 PM) Lol, don't so emo bro. They are a giant company and it takes much more than this kind of issue to take them down. U like it or not, they gonna survive. We won't impact them, even if u choose to buy ccp phone next. And in fact their new phones won't have this issue anymore as far as I know. This is definitely manufacturing defect, hence they replace it for free early of the year. If their next series won't have this issue, the least they can do is to not penalize the pink line. Mine is worth RM900 trade-in but due to pink line, is just RM225. That's the bare minimum they can do!

QUOTE(silverhawk @ Dec 21 2024, 12:39 PM) Its a problem with any phone that uses samsung screens, which is the vast majority of the market. I got it on my sony xperia before as well. Jokes on you guys, the iphone uses the same displays from samsung If you google around, many iphone users also face the same issue. I've done some research. Yes it seems to impact all manufacturers using Samsung displays, but it seems to be disproportionately impacting Samsung's flagship lines. You will find some iPhone users with this issue, but it's nowhere near as prevalent to suggest a manufacturing defect.

Could one of the reasons the Samsung flagships get it more than other flagships example iPhone be due to heat dissipation? From my experience, my S22 runs a whole lot hotter on average doing simple things like Shopee app or Waze compared to iPhone 13. Even when charging, phone gets rather hot. This is despite charging using 20W on both phones and turning on battery saver on S22.

Since this is a manufacturing defect, is it too much to ask Samsung to either:
1. Replace the screen FOC even though out of warranty period 2. Not penalise the trade-in value of the phone in their own trade-in program (my S22 is RM900 without this defect, and RM225 with!) 3. Offer overtrade bonus to upgrade to the newer S24 or S25 series, where the problem has presumably been resolved
Also, is it possible to launch a class action lawsuit?

Sent this email to Samsung Malaysia CEO office. Don't have high hopes, but no harm to try.
---------------
Hi there,
I am been a Samsung user for multiple generations. Before my current S22 256GB, I had a Galaxy S10e 128GB.
Recently, following the update on 16 Dec 2024, my phone display developed a pink line on the left side of the screen.
I went to Samsung express service center on 20 Dec 2024. The technician confirmed it is a hardware issue and I needed to replace the screen.
However, since my screen is otherwise free of any scratch or damage, I requested for Samsung to bear the cost of the repair. Of late, there are many incidents of people with the same phone as me (S20 / S21 / S22 lines) experiencing some kind of green line or pink link on their display.
The technician said they will have to send in a report to Samsung Malaysia to request for the free screen replacement.
On 24 Dec 2024, I received a call from Samsung Malaysia that the screen will not be replaced for free. It will be charged RM500++.
Today, I went to Samsung Publika to check my S22 trade-in value. The sales executive said that the pink line is considered a screen defect, and as such negatively impacts the trade-in value of my device. I was told that if my screen didn't have this defect, I could get up to RM900 when trade-in. However, with the defect, the trade-in value is only RM225.
How is this acceptable? Samsung Malaysia will neither repair the screen, and will also penalize the trade-in value of my device. I was actually thinking of getting the S25 series when it launches next month, but Samsung's customer service is atrocious. A flagship phone should be able to last for many years. Samsung promises 7 years of software upgrades. What's the point, when the phone's screen gets damaged after 2 or 3 years?
I appeal to Samsung Malaysia to do something about this. My phone has never been dropped - there is no scratches to the screen and no dents to the body. I've taken good care of the phone, yet the screen has become defective. It is indicative of a manufacturing defect.
If Samsung Malaysia does not offer a good solution to this issue, I will escalate the matter to the Malaysian authorities by lodging a complaint with Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri Dan Kos Sara Hidup (KPDN).
Thank you!

QUOTE(ry8128 @ Dec 28 2024, 10:02 PM) Good try ts, keep us updated on the results. But i doubt you gonna win the case. Its gonna be very subjective on how you can prove it is a manufacturing defect. More so when it is out of warranty. Samsung can easily escape saying all of their phones comes with 1 year warranty and any repair after that will involve cost. Authorities wont be able to do anything bout it. Anyhow, its good effort. We can learn from this. I mean thousands of people are experiencing this specific issue all over the world. Samsung themselves have had a free screen replacement program even for out of warranty S20/21/22 devices earlier this year. Quite obvious there is some QC lapse or defect in the manufacturing process.

QUOTE(ry8128 @ Dec 28 2024, 10:08 PM) No parts are build to last a life time, hence this is where the 1 year warranty comes in. The free replacement program is something like a goodwill/promotion from them to attract more customers and give confidence, not to correct or compensate their customers. I don't disagree. Everything electronic is bound to fail eventually. However, in the case of the pink/green line on thr Galaxy S 20/21/22, it appears to be significantly more widespread than the "design failure rate". That is indicative of some sort of design flaw or manufacturing defect. I mean, more iPhones are sold globally every year compared to Samsung's S series phones. iPhones also use Samsung AMOLED screens. But even then, this issue is not anywhere near as widespread among iPhone users. This post has been edited by contestchris: Dec 28 2024, 10:54 PM
