Laptop >>>> Mini PC MiniPC all uses laptop chipset, no battery, no screen, no KB, no Resell Value. Unless you really HATE laptop. for abit more price, you get a complete set. I was planning to have a MiniPC to replace my Gaming PC. but after i study, even thunderbolt 4 auto cut 35% eGPU perf. then i totally give up the idea of MiniPC. But if you familiar with MacOS, Mac Mini M4 is the best out there. magically cheapest if you consider the performance it packed. mystvearn liked this post

If its solely for wife use and she already has a tablet, just buy a mini pc (Intel NUC/Mac Mini) which you can easily turn it into an entertainment PC when required.
But if you wanted to use it 'occasionally' as gaming PC as well, then build a mini ITX PC. Mini PC like those intel Nuc which is 4x4inch size or the new MAC Mini 5x5inch is truly portable which you can put it in your backpack and use a tablet as a monitor. |

QUOTE(mystvearn @ Nov 28 2024, 02:08 PM) Hi, Something thats with big RAM size (32GB) I would vote for build MATX/ITX PC, as I doubt there are many available NUC/Laptop with such capacity or wont cost you a bomb. If that office 12gen PC serves her need why not build another one for WFH? Can mix around with 13/14gen nonK i5 too.Need to build/buy a ready made a pc for wife for WFH use. Currently have a Intel i5 4th gen desktop atx case from office. Too slow. Retired that for an Intel 12th gen mini itx build. Placed at the office. Current laptop is a 2 in 1 lenovo with 8th gen Intel, same as mine, but mine is Asus. Specs are almost similar but her pc is too slow. Will need to spend more time to remove bloatware from that. At least my Asus 2 in 1 8th gen 16gb ram can do work and can have an external display, though I have to admit that migrating both laptops to W11 was a bad idea. My laptop is also slow. At least I've upgraded ram, the lenovo is stuck with 8 gb. I also noticed that 16gb does not cut it any more even though for work. Need 32 gb ram at least. I think my 16 gb ram is the difference compared to 8 gb lenovo. Soldered. Now she needs a WFH pc to replace the laptop. Should I build a mini itx pc or buy a mini pc. She rarely uses the 2 in 1 feature since already have dedicated tablet. Ideas? Budget <5k. |

You can try with Asrock Deskmini B660/B760 for Intel 12th Gen.
It is using desktop chipset and desktop proc. Performance is better than laptop chipset. Only limitation is no slot for graphic card. |

Just to add. RM150 more can get you Cooler Master V 850W SFX. Makes it more future proof if you plan to turn that Lian Li A4-H2O into gaming rig. It has triple slot graphic card support and a PCIE 4.0 X16 riser.

If you upgrade the ram to 16gb plus a SSD, does it still perform slowly? Forgot. Outstation. Later will check Im personally using Intel N100 with 16GB ram because I dont feel I need anything more powerful than a Skylake (6th gen Intel). My bro wanted something future proof thus he upgraded all the office pc to i5 13th gen with 8 GB ram and I honestly couldnt feel any difference using them for normal day-to-day work. The only real difference is when you do heavy tasks like windows update or want to play games that require 3D rendering. The only reason why I upgrade is because I needed W11 and this mini pc idle at 10w vs i5 3570 which idling at 60-70w. If you feel like you need more processing power, then just avoid those U chip. Those HX chip from Intel are desktop class. |

Just give me these 2 "old" PC. Install Linux and these "old" PC will fly. Windows is what make the PC "old". I'm running a dual core PC 10 years old running Linux doing work (designing electronic, 3D, programming, etc).

Not sure if it eset though. My workplace has phased out all pc more than 5 years. These include just normal clerical work. |

Some older system with a mediocre GPU may suffer a bit. Maybe get a current i3 or i5 desktop chip without those E-cores. E-cores is a bit saving on power consumption but the switching between P and E cores are not exactly smooth (latency) and have been identified as one of the reason why Intel has stuttering problem ever since 12th gen. Keyboard and mouse input lag are among the known problem.I've sold my i7 4770k setup few years ago, but I am using photoshop, 3d tools. Even AMD cpu with more than 1 die also suffer from this latency problem when more than 1 die is activated. mystvearn liked this post

I switched my AMD Ryzen Acer laptop to an intel N100 with 12GB RAM windows tablet 2 months ago due to Acer keyboard and power problems. The tablet was meant as a temporary replacement and since I don't need much processing power so I bought the tablet under RM1K after discount.
