Hey guys =)

Me and my wife are moving to Penang (from Europe, Finland!) in like 3 weeks. We'll most likely be staying at Sunny Ville Condomium for about 6 months. Now I've been browsing all these Malaysian ISPs and it seems 2mbps is the maximum you get on Penang. Is PenangFON the best and the cheapest for 2mbps? It sure looks that way! Is Bittorrent or some other service blocked, etc? How's the installation, they say it's one-time RM40 and RM80 for the installation. Can I do it myself? I mean they obviously might have to hook up some connections in the apartment but I can plug my own pc in for sure happy.gif How long is their delivery time?

It's all weird to me, in Finland the normal internet for most active internet users would be 8/1mbps with a free WLAN router when you sign up and no charges except the monthly payment. No long term subscriptions either, you pay on a montly basis and can cancel whenever you wanna. And no blocked services, can d/l all you want on torrent and other "warez" related progs.

On another subject, what's the best cellphone service provider on Penang? I'm bringing my own phone (Nokia 5140), so all I need is the SIM card. Prepaid is ok too, everything goes as long as it's cheap and no long term contracts. My wife has the same thing going on and we'll mostly be calling each other and then our friends back in Finland every now and then. What would be the best for us?

Thanks in advance!!

Leo

yes..penang fon is the best ISP in Penang and cheapest......u can't install it yourself since penang fon using the FTTH method which mean fiber to home. u don't need modem..just need network card and router if u want to share connection between your pc at home...yup...bittorent is not blocked but throttled...

the best cellphone provider in Penang will be Celcom. but Maxis is great too and i recommend u using MAxis...

Hey there. Its great to see a Finnish folks. I hope you'll enjoy your stay in Malaysia.

Penang is a nice place to be in. The main problem is the internet connectivity. You'll find the maximum speed the consumer can get is 1Mbps or 2Mbps at the most. Apart from that the connection isn't that smooth. You'll find some hiccups along but then you'll learn to bear with it and yes the connection isn't as great as in Finland and in Sweden. I've been to those places back in 1999/2000.

As for your second question , Well I would choose Celcom 3G personally. Its one of the best provider in Malaysia. On top of that you can pay RM 68 for their unlimited data package. I recommend you to go for Unlimited 3G/HSDPA/DATA as there is no any form of contracts or so. So you may just cancel it

Thanks guys =)

We'll be taking PenangFON then, cos right now we're feeling we want the cellphones prepaid. Basically the internet is cool at 2mbps for me, what I hate is constant disconnecting, terrible response times etc. You know when it takes 30 seconds for Google to load the search page and so. I mean I probably will not be doing that much downloading (I'm on a holiday in Asia! Why sit around on the computer=) but I just want the stuff I'm checking out (my regular sites, uploading photos to our album, reading/writing email) etc to be easily accessable. Also I can't rely on my cellphone always being there when my wife wants to go www, so the connection can't be via cellphone. I won't play online games (CS, WoW) or anything especially not on a laptop so ping milliseconds and that stuff don't matter to me , I just want it to work and be reliable and cheap.

About the prepaid cellphone packages, Celcom had some X-something thing...it looked ok but I'm looking for comparisons. Anything else you could recommend?

Oh and Prasys, where were you in Finland and Sweden and why would you come to Finland in the first place? Studying? ;-)

Go for PenangFON.No doubt it's the best option for you.
symmetrical 2mbps is for international connection and if you access local servers it'll give you speeds in access of about 25-30mbps with ftps and torrents.
Here's proof:
http://speedtest.net/global.php?continent=...1054&city=32985
The result shows 32mbps.
Fastest isp in South East Asia which even Singapore can't compete due to P2P restrictions there.Torrent bandwidth in Singapore is controlled but not PenangFON.

For mobile since you're from Finland, you should have heard of Telenor.Over here in Malaysia Telenor owns DiGi therefore you would want a Scandinavian telco which could offer you good links back to your country as well as roaming. DiGi prepaid plans are the best in Malaysia which fits your short term requirement, no contracts required but they'll need only your passport for registration purposes. You can use your phone as backup as well with EDGE from DiGi and data downloads becomes unlimited once you hit RM149, thereon it becomes like your broadband no volume charges.

I know Finland does not have a regional telco in Scandinavia. They have a major telco equipment manufacturer which is Nokia though.

Their facing problem with most building managements in the "Waiting for Approval" list. Penang fon lays their optic cables outside the telekom riser. So make the building become messy. Most building managements cannot approve.

Their service is pretty unreliable previously with frequent outage. Certain condo is better so you have to ask around.

there also TIME that trying to get into our apartment because i noticed that they put registration form behind PenangFON fliers in management office,i did call the TIME person incharge, he said that its all depends to our management side to give permission to install time into our building, if granted, they will take months also to install but i can wait. So, in the end, its our management that have the power to let them in..PenangFON been in our apartment since 2years back..xD

I have been with Streamyx for 2 years. Now contract is about to expiring. I was considering to switch to PenangFON for the time being while waiting for TIME to install their infrastructure at the apartment where I am staying. I believe is going to take months if not years to do that.

Searched over Google for PenangFon not much info is available. I am a bit worry after switch to PenangFON got a lot problem. At least Streamyx is so far very stable and reliable.

Just used it for over little 1 month plus. When is up and running, everything was okay. When you have service outrage, you can do nothing but wait. On average, it down for 2 times/month (4 hours and above). as of this writing, the Internet is down more 10 hours for the day since 12PM until now and still counting. Email their customer service no response. The only thing you can expect an email from them was "service is up, kindly restart your router".

Streamyx is way better. 2 times down over the course of 2 years. Well done.
