Hi all, recently my laptop seems to suffer from thermal heating issue. I was casual gaming previously without issue but notice FPS dropped badly for past few weeks.

I installed HWInfo and found the CPU is hovering around 90c even under light load (Normal youtube surfing with only 1 tab open)

I have done the following but the CPU temperature seems to be still high 90c under normal load.

1. Reformat whole laptop
2. Send laptop to shop for servicing (Fan cleaning and apply new thermal paste)

I have attached the HWInfo graph for reference while I'm surfing youtube with 1 tab open

The following is my laptop spec:
Thinkbook 15 Series
Intel i5-1135G7
16GM RAM
Intel Iris Xe Graphics

Also wondering could it be the fan is not working properly leading to heat issue. I did feel the fan is sucking in cold air from the vent but the keyboard side of the CPU location still feel hot.

Welcome any feedback on this

Most likely Your fan not optimal or thermal paste worn/pump out.

Also worth considering is where you place your laptop, on desk or pillow/carpet which obstruct the airflow

If you cleaned the fan and changed the thermal paste then yeah the main culprit is most probably the fan.

In the meantime, try using cooling pad first.

Yea the graph is taken when I'm on my desk so the airflow should be sufficient.
I did take apart the laptop just now and check the fan is clean, did not find any chunk of dust that's blocking the airway.
So not sure if the thermal paste really not working. I might give the honeywell thermal paste a try

I'm trying to source new fan for my laptop. Meanwhile wondering if the copper heat pipe will have any effect on this or not. Though I think the chance of heat pipe causing issue is quite low?

Yeah chances of copper heat pipe as the culprit is low unless there is a puncture.

What is the fan speeds according to HWInfo? Does it able to ramp up & down? Typical it will spin ~3000rpm at full speed.

Other you could try is to oil the fan bearing, dont use WD40 type, use heavier lubricant like Singer oil. This wont dry out so fast.

Check the temperature again running Windows in Safe Mode.

Check for malware infections. Use Malwarebytes free to do the scanning.

The thing is HWInfo cannot detect any fan speed or RPM/Fan Speed %. Not sure if this is a sign of fan being kaput or there is no such sensor in the laptop.
I even download other tool to detect it but cannot find fan speed information

I just did a laptop reformat but still same result. Will malware still persist even after reformat? I did not keep any file during the reformat so it's clean format.

reapply thermal paste but makesure it is a thin layer, a thicker layer will cause this issue. i recently did my thermal paste for all my thinkpad laptops

might want to try to redo the paste, recently i did for my old laptop it did boot up fine and and functioning, then after some hour the temp goes up too high and shut down. The fan spin like crazy if try to on it again.

so clean up and redo again, so far temp already stable, only the pch is remaining at 60-70C but i read that it is supposed to be like that so i just leave it at the moment.

The CM mastergel regular has a very hard/dry consistency and quite hard to apply properly especially for seldom diy like me.

the service guy may not have time to test long enough.

Open up your laptop; and check whether the fans are spinning by running a CPU stress test icon_idea.gif

Could be a faulty fan.

Happened to my X230 previously. Fan will spin ok during boot up but when the CPU heats up, it slowed down. Tried oiling it but no avail. Ended replacing it with a new fan from AliExpress. Works well since.

I just ordered new Honeywell PTM 7950 thermal pad. It will arrive few days later.
If the thermal is still that high, then will order new fan (Unfortunately my laptop is international version so need to source it via AliXpress and will definitely take one-two weeks again).

Any result will let you guys know. Cheers

Hi all, some update here.
The main culprit seems to be the thermal paste.
I disassemble the laptop and found one of the heatpipe screw seems to be stripped. I suspect the repair shop try to take out the heatpipe by bending it but fail to do so. This also cause the original thermal paste don't have enough contact with the heatpipe.

I manage to take out the stripped screw and put on the new Honeywell Thermal Pad. Been running it for a while and the temperature is much more lower.

Blacklisted them. They suppose to be the pro in this thing. Not causing more troubles to customer/end user.
