Same here. Just tried my luck, walked in and saw the new mini. Checked the box and verified it's indeed 2024 version. Grab one and pay immediately. Now I'm on my way back, can't believe how small the packaging box compare to M2 Mac mini's. Will update you guys with photo later after I have a taste of it.

Can't wait!
The mag mini!
I meant the magnum mini.

Is it necessary to put home folder on external? For average user what's your home folder size after a few years? Anyone with a device for a few years pls report here. Thanks.

Been using 256GB base M1 and M2 for past 3 years. Actually still can la. Usually have like 130GB left. I would kept it around 130-150GB free space. But have to be cautious everytime what I install. Just want to have more freedom using the mac now. I will run LLM too and the models are quite big. So I guess it’s good to have it external.
*
I see. Thanks for your input. Then for average non gamers/coders like me the internal 256GB should be enough. The biggest apps that I'm going to install are those video & photo editing apps. At least I don't have to worry about external drive unplugged or malfunction situation.
I still can install some big size apps like vm and casual games on external right?

I called GDex around 5pm just now and was told delivery should be made today. They said will help me check with the delivery person and get back to me. But, no response after that.

I'm looking for cooling case.

So far saw someone use aluminium heatsink on Reddit, the temps went down a bit (doesn't justify the modifications).

Now waiting someone try it with fans like below:

For mac mini or the ssd enclosure? I thought mac mini won't have overheating problem?
My m2 ssd stays around 40-45 idle and around 50-55 when in operation, that's without the fan on. If turn fan on can reduce 5 degree overall.

When shopping for cables to connect the mini to a monitor, what are the specs I should be watching out for?
I bought this and it flat out doesn't work.

https://shopee.com.my/20Gbps-USB-3.2-Gen-2-...862.14783595574
*
The 2 front port only up to 10Gbps while the 3 at the back you need at least TB3 and preferably TB4. The link you share is not very suitable for mini as non of the ports give you USB 3 20 Gbps.

Update : Wasn't aware you asked about monitor. I bought a type c to DP for myself, for type c to type c I thought any c to c cable should work?

Anyone here switched from PC and still using their old 1080p or 1440p monitors?
*
I'm using 27" 2k monitor, don't trust the "must use 4k at least" or HiDPI myth online. I'm not seeing any blur text on 2K without using betterdisplay, I have another same specs (albeit lower end) monitor connects to windows 11 side by side and I can't see any different between the two. Maybe I don't have sharp eye.

What does betterdisplay bring to the table?
*
Not sure actually, Some say not much different while others say very effective on enable HiDPI on native resolution. It's taken up system GPU and CPU resources so I choose not to try. I'm satisfied with what I get without any tweaking. If someone tried it and do find it's worth the hassle please share your experience here.

Just get a 6 inch or 8 inch mini fan and blow it on the SSD, don't have to worry about temperature anymore after that.
*
Second that. While the enclosure fan only takes about 2-3C off the SSD temp, those fan can reduces up to 8-10C easily on my case.

Getting the big ass heatsink. I find bigger heatsink does work. But unable to use the cover.

This is for enclosure or just the nvme? I have one similar on my PC nvme.

My cheap setup with 2 12CM fans, so effective I turned off the enclosure fan for good. Stil got space for another time machine drive later.

Dude. The SSD and SSD nand I/O are both your internal. I made this freaking mistake thinking the one is my external. Boy i'm so wrong. I notice my external was scorching hot and it couldn't be 37c.

You need to enable SMART to see your external ssd. Fan can't really dissipate heat faster than a heatsink.

Yes SMART already enabled. It's my external SSD look at the second drive WDSN850X. Let me share my records so far, all with at least 30 minutes after turn on mini. My external drive only for storage so your mileage may vary:
a. drive + enclosure fan on - 45-47C
b. drive + enclosure fan off - 49-52C
c. drive + enclosure fan on + on top of 2 12CM fan - 39-42C
d. drive + enclosure fan off + on top of 2 12CM fan - 39-42C
All test while the drive is idle. If running speed test non stop for around 15 minutes add about 8-10C to the results above.

you using acasis USB4/TB4 nvme ssd enclosure? What is the temp for your ssd?
*
That's same enclosure as mine. Yes pls update your temp especially if you use it as home, system or application drive.

maybe the cooling is much better for acasis . How much the enclosure?
*
Around RM360 with fan lol. If I knew the fan has so limited effect on cooling I might just get the cheaper without fan version. What brand is your enclosure? I saw somewhere Acasis use intel tb chip which is a bit slower but has less heat and more stable compare to another mainstream chip by ASMedia.

I am using ORICO USB 4 enclosure. Maybe there is no actual contact with the SSD on the cover itself. So not much can heat dissipate. I think if it's able to make contact with the aluminium casing, should be a lot better.
*
What's your idle temp now? Can stick some thermal pad onto the nvme. The acasis case came with 2 pcs (1mm & 0.5mm). I stick both on the nvme.

Not sure, didn’t hear the fan spinning. Is the fan auto on or need to push the button?
*
Depends, you need to go very close to the enclosure to hear it. If turn on it'll help to reduce around 1-3C. I suggest you to put both thermal pad come with the enclosure.
Your external drive just for storage or running apps/system too?
