A recent car theft incident at Suria KLCC’s valet parking went viral over the past few days not only because of its location but also how quickly it was solved. As it turns out, the major reason why the stolen car was managed to be found in the first was an Apple AirTag.
The incident first caught the attention of the netizens when the owner of the stolen Honda HRV, Zach Khai Shin published a post on his Facebook page at 2:14 PM last Sunday. In the post, there was a picture of his key and valet ticket, proving that the thief managed to drive off with his car even when the original key was not with the car.
In the post, he mentioned that the HRV already made its way to the Subang area according to the “GPS tracker” that he had put in the car. At this time, he has yet to reveal that the tracker was actually an AirTag.
Almost 8 hours later, Suria KLCC published a statement saying that the suspect was apprehended with the “help” of its CCTV footage and “the car’s GPS system”. However, Zach then published a new post at 10:19 PM on Monday which provided a new perspective on the incident including how the Suria KLCC management actually played very little role towards the discovery of the car at that time.
In the new post, Zach revealed that he enlisted the help of his friends to follow the trail left by the AirTag in his car while he was busy filing the police report of the incident. They eventually found the car at a private premise and have also learned from the security personnel of the building that the suspect was extremely uncooperative when he entered the car park.
Interestingly enough, they also found out that the suspect was still in the area. A call was made to 999 and within 10 minutes or so, police arrived in the building and arrested the suspect.
Hongda, insurance company tell him to say like that.
The truth how they found the car will remain a secret
Better than the civic type r case stolen from genting also ended up in subang 5 days later, what are the odds both are hondas registered in sinkieland?
Nowadays true professional car thieves use the find airtag function to prevent this
People also usually put couple of tracker in car, mix of Android, airtag etc. Sumore newer car with with hongda connect already can track location and disable car

Can recommend a good gps tracker? Something with long lasting battery, and accurate map location. I'm using android.
Ok, wasn't airtag exclusive to iPhone? Or it can ping with andriod too.
Thanks for the info, will buy 1 and try it out. Me on andriod so changing to apple is not my cuppa.
Better research more. Uncle google say Airtag run on bluetooth with detection range 30m It means should there is a iphone with bluetooth enable, the ping able to be register For android there is no native program embedded (not like IOS). I saw some article mentioned 3 party apps which only able to show proximity area whether there is/are bluetooth tracker device is detect.
Basically...in order to use airtag, you need to login into IOS account and register the airtag. In order to fully utilize airtag, you still need to get an iphone or ipad
Airtag is exclusive for apple. While smart tag is also exclusive to Samsung. If u are using other brands, this should work https://s.shopee.com.my/4AfSEmXcNW

although Airtag is exclusive to iPhone but there's a lot of iPhone globally...

The Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 only works with Samsung smartphones. The tag can broadcast its precise location when connected to a high-end Samsung flagship with UWB support. Under ideal settings, it can remain connected from as far as 120 meters over Bluetooth.
When beyond the Bluetooth tracking range, The SmartTag 2 uses Samsung's SmartThings Find network to relay the tag's current location. Like Apple restricting AirTag compatibility to Apple devices, network compatibility for Samsung's location tracker remains limited to Samsung phones.

Place ur iphone in the car, drive the car around a while. U will receive a notification that there’s an airtag following u. Nt sure if that will help u locate exactly where it is, but u will be alerted that u r being tracked.

Ur iphone will only alert you if the airtag belongs to others
As for this case the carjacker not using iphone kot so not aware Even if the javket use iphone he will also have trouble looking for it in the car if hidden as u only can activate your own airtag Kekwa
On July 3, an AirTag and a Find My Device tracker from Pebblebee (it’s not mentioned which one) were placed inside of a package and mailed out through the US Postal Service. The AirTag provided updates on its location through the local truck and hub, as well as a larger truck heading to a larger warehouse. The Pebblebee tracker only provided a single update when it was at that warehouse, and that update kept reverting back to saying it was last seen at the user’s home.
That update eventually stuck, and on July 6 the package was delivered to its destination. The AirTag continued to provide frequent updates on its location throughout the journey, including in other warehouses and even on the road.
By the end, the Pebblebee tracker apparently once again reverted back to saying it was last seen at the user’s home, never updating when it arrived in the final location. It’s clear that the tracker was seen at some point, but it’s extremely odd that the data gathered was effectively thrown out.
Yeah, Google will need better support from third-party tracker devices. At least it's an open system, so we should expect a better and more consistent tracker in the near future. So far AirTag is definitely far more superior than Android trackers but unfortunately many of us are not using Apple Phone.

IIRC Android users can detect nearby air tags to prevent being tracked so there's actually no reason why air tags can't work with Android phones, all because apple want to overcharge 😂

It will never be as good as Airtag. Too fragmented in Android ecosystem. You need UWB to work and only those high end Android have it.
Isn't the Samsung smart tag more accurate in tracking, now there's a new model also. Airtag slow to update and bodo warning buzzer bikini kacau je.
do you own one? i have a few questions if you can answer.
1) Does the "tag" need simcard? 2) how long is the life of the "tag"? 3) How far can the "tag" be found? worried if it needed to be connected to bluetooth (which defeats the purpose)
I thought AirTag maximum trackable distance is 10 meters?

1. no sim 2. 1 year battery life - just change battery after it run out 3. apple tag report to apple phones nearby, android tag report to android phones nearby. if there are no phones nearby, the air tags will not be able to report the gps data.

holdup on the 3rd point. meaning it will use OTHER PEOPLE's android phone to transmit the GPS data? how does that work? they dont connect to tag itself, no?

how does his airtag inform his owner location when owner iphone is near to owner?
i understand airtag report to owner iphone when they are near to airtag

look at the youtube video above... air tag connect via ultra wideband on Bluetooth to the phones and update

Yeah you can know there is an AirTag but it doesn’t help you in finding it. Especially when the speaker is removed. I have mine removed in my car
And it takes a while for your iPhone to show the notification. A solid 24 hours if not wrong

Even for apple airtag , thats how it works. It will ping other ppl iphone for airtag . The iphone will send a encrypted location signal to the airtag which will in turn send the data to your iphone. The best part is other ppl wont even know that their iphone is being pinged.

near is Bluetooth range that's why the specs about 30m. But if outside of this range the airtag has to piggyback off nearby devices that are in the network (one can opt out) since they need internet to tell owner its 10000km away.

basically the tag just uses phone background to ping back to HQ the location is not the tag, but the location of the phone that ping back
more phones around , get a clearer picture
android phones give too much freedom to to user where they can turn off location on their phone itself so that is useless even with a lot of phone around
while apple not exactly respecting their user and the user is somewhat forced to accept these potential loopholes

A man has used an Apple AirTag to track down his stolen car to a country 11,000 kilometres away from where it was taken. The 2022 GMC Yukon XL disappeared from a Toronto driveway last August, with the tracking device following its movements to the Port of Montreal, before appearing again in the United Arab Emirates. The owner, who requested that his name be withheld, had hidden an AirTag in the car after having a similar vehicle stolen from his driveway last May. He said that he contacted police, hired a private investigator and contacted Interpol, but is yet to get his car back. ”We’ve done everything we possibly can, save going over there and trying to take it back ourselves,” he told Canadian broadcaster CBC. “I want my truck back.”

the samsung tag only works when samsung phone is around. i dont think their market share is big in malaysia, since xiaomi, oppo, vivo is much cheaper and same spec as their phones. im obviously speaking out of my butt, i dont have data to back this up.
Although ANDROID has a bigger market share compared to Apple, the number of iphones is more compared to individual brands. So the samsung tag might not work, apple air tag might work better.

Dey... Airtag don't transmit gps lar Airtag use the same tech when the 1st mobile phone aka water bottle phone aka big brother big is invented. It triangulate the signal send from the phone to the station tower. For airtag, it is like old days mobile phone and your iphone or ipad with bluetooth enable become station tower. Airtag just periodically ping signal outward.

how airtag send message?
thru cellular data or wifi or bluetooth
coz most ppl off bluetooth
bluetooth, only work if there's a lot of iphone around and they don't turn off bluetooth also the theives don't use iphone, iphone will tell them there's airtag around and help them to find it

i think it is still work even with bluetooth off. just like how you can still use find my when your phone is off.

because there's other iphone users around with their bluetooth turned on then the signal relay to their iphone using bluetooth and sent to apple using their mobile data
so you will get approximate last known location from the airtag when you're not near it but in order for you to find it, you will need to get close to it and bluetooth to make it chime and get precise location
that's why i said it won't work, if the theives is using iphone too, because they implemented anti tracking cause their iphone will let them know they are being tracked and help them to get rid of the air tag
airtag uses the UWB other than BT which piggy back onto other iphone UWB system
so basically when it leaves the BT range, it pings onto other user's UWB compatible iphone nearby to bounce the signal around to approximate the last known location. it is then uploaded to the tracker's Find My app.
you have any suggestions/recommendations? links perhaps.
Pebblebee and Chipolo I think. Just need to check for the label "Works with Android Find My Device". But it won't really work out of the box because need Google to enable rollout which is taking forever.

What does "enable rollout" means? Again, i is newb.
