Diesel engine generally will last longer compare to petrol engine, few reasons - Diesel itself got lubricity, 2nd lesser components to worry compare to similar modern petrol turbo engine, 3rd diesel engine torque is faster and higher to reach at low RPM making it a good highway cruiser, easy pick up on both on-off road condition. For big size vehicle like SUV, diesel is more practical as the high torque will help move the heavy chassis easily at low RPM compare petrol counterparts. When you can move/drive at low RPM most of the time = save fuel = less wear = long lasting.
