Hi all,

With the recent announcement by MS regarding the new age of of Windows AI, they have also unveiled a new slew of laptops that will be running on Snapdragon X Elite and Plus SoCs. Personally, I am intrigued to give this a try since I want the efficiency and great battery life of a Macbook, but with Windows OS, since most of the apps I use are only Windows. What are your thoughts on this? Are you willing to give this a try, or will this be another failure like the previous Windows RT?

I think it has more to do with the apps that you are using. If you are just using Office, browser, you will have no problem switching. For others with older and pricey software, mostly likely they will stay with X86 especially those that are related to manufacturing sides.

Honestly, I have been using Windows on Arm on my Joibook SK3000 running snapdragon 850 with 4gb of ram and tbh, I would not go back to x86 based PC.

Good enough performance with outstanding battery life and all the apps I used were available on Arm ( Edge Chromium + webapps, Office suite)

Well legacy drivers are going to suck

Developers doing twice the work for x64 and arm

Unless microsoft drop x64, arm might be the minority group

Have you tried the x64 emulation on WARM? What's the impact on overall SoC usage? Does it respond similar to a native x64 Windows or slightly or greatly slower?

True on this, unless MS sets clear roadmap that the future is going to be based on ARM entirely, else I don't see devs ditching x64 anytime soon, just like what Apple did with their Mac lineups.

And apple has rosetta 2 for legacy apps on x64. I doubt there is something for windows

To tell the truth, the only X64 apps I used were Tailscale, Xtreme Download Manager and Samsung Notes app on PC.
Only took slightly longer time to start the app (cold start) but once loaded, performance is good enough for me.

Mind I am only using an old Snapdragon 850 PC, and the new Snapdragon X ones were miles and many times better than this PC

It seems like Intel Lunar Lake will pose a challenge to Elite X by a complete redesign of the cores. I think only AMD is being left out now since they are sticking with the older max performance power configuration.

Anyway, I dont think these laptop will appeal to the mass as of now because I think these will be priced above USD1000 at the very least, chasing after Apple Macbooks.

MS laptops will def be priced around that, since they are also aiming for that premium hardware offering. Other manufs will prolly offer something decent down the line, to bring the rate of adoption higher.

Hopefully but I dont have high hopes... considering that Qualcomm is selling Snapdragon 8 Gen3 chip in excess of USD200... I doubt they will sell the X series cheaper. Unless Microsoft subsidize these laptop, I dont see a hope for sub 4k X Elite/Plus laptops.

I'm really interested in the Snapdragon X Elite laptops too. I’ve been using Windows for years and am always on the lookout for something with better battery life and efficiency. If these new laptops can deliver on that front, they might be worth a shot. I’m just hoping they’re not another Windows RT situation. I’m definitely keeping an eye out for reviews.

I'm currently using the Asus Vivobook S15 (X Elite). So far battery life is wayy better than my previous AMD powered ThinkPad E15, but still falls short from manufacturer's claim of up to 17 hours. The best i can get is close to 12 hours, but then again, I have 3 peripherals connected to it via Bluetooth, an external monitor and a USB 3.0 dongle connected as well. Haven't really tried using the laptop as if without connected to all these external devices since this is my office issued laptop.

Guys is Snapdragon laptop worth to buy yet ? Or Lunar Lake laptop better ?

Isnt this already obvious? Besides X Elite laptop aint cheap despite not really compatible with all apps.

But Qualcomm says things will change for the better in coming future. Is it believable?

what msft do is more relevant than qualcomm...

I still believe in snapdragon on windows will keep improving. In the meantime will wait for the price to come down 1st.

Agreed. Right now the price abit high especially for OLED version. Asus vivobook mostly RM 4k & above. If the price around RM 3k will be good

check out review first before buying,
for now just stick with x86 CPU, king of backward compatibility.

WARM is different beast of OS,
for example Android, you plug in any thing, it will almost certainly works,
USB dock, ethernet, hdd, ,keyboard/mice, plug-n-play, why? because Android is build on top of Linux.
a lot of drivers are added into the kernel.

While Windows + x86, a lot of drivers are shipped with Windows, tonnes of support from hardware vendor,
most people cant leave Windows due to the widest hardware/software compatibilities.

WASM is Windows + ARM, without support from their maker Qualcomm/MS, it will not work.

Thanks for the explanation, as an android user I'm really curious about snapdragon on Windows, will buy one when the price drops lower to feel experience it myself

In the meantime you guys can give Win 11 ARM64 a go by installing it on Raspberry Pi 5. See if you like the experience. I sure do. Right now I'm just waiting for the price to go down further before making any decisions.

Anyone here using Windows ARM? How is Excel ARM compared to Excel x86?

Specifically the ALT accelerator keys, are they the same? For example, for setting column width, it is ALT-HOW (new) or ALT-OCW (old).

Asking because on Excel ARM MacOS, it only goes up to ALT-HO then have to use mouse to click.

Looking to get a X Elite lappy for wife to use. Excel is priority so if cannot do the above, will have to consider Core Ultra instead.

I’ve been using Parallels Desktop to run Windows on my Mac.
Before that, I tried using CrossOver to run Windows programs, but it made my MacBook run hotter.

Since switching to Parallels Desktop back in 2022, I haven’t had any issues — everything’s been running smoothly.

It's funny as shit as to why Windows on ARM can run perfectly smooth on MacOS virtualization but not natively on an ARM based computer made specifically for it.
