Asakusa to Tsukiji is pretty far. By train itself will take probably 10-12 stops including changing line to Hibiya line. Asakusa to Ginza is probably the same. I know you are interested in the tuna auction which starts early. I personally haven't been to the tuna auction but I think you still got a shot at it if u can take the earliest train, 5.45am. Taxi itself will probably cost more than 2500....
*
Isn't the tuna auction starting at 5am ? Train tak sempat.

2 ways; taxi or Psychzz's way (if you have friends with you) biggrin.gif

Actually, it's not really that hard to get the tourist visa.
As long as you have all the documents in order; it'll most likely be approved.

Their main objective is to make sure that you're really going there for a holiday and not some 'other' reasons. So, just make sure you have -
* your letter from your company stating your employment;
* your bank account statement stating that you have enough funds to travel;
* a simple itinerary (sample on the embassy website) stating your plans during your time there and where you will be staying. If you have already made reservations at a hotel, you can submit the hotel confirmation slip as supporting doc.
* since you already booked the return air ticket; submit that as well.
* and all other required docs as stated on the website.
*
Just to add to this, i've gotten the visa first, then proceeded to buy air ticket and hotel booking. All i did was, submit an approved & signed bank account statement of RM6k, very simple printed itinerary using Excel, passport and a copy, and the visa application form (without guarantor).

In case one is afraid of booking anything in advance before obtaining the visa, dont worry icon_rolleyes.gif

However, be sure to ask the embassy officer clearly what it's needed and do check too when's the embassy closing for lunch or holidays to prevent multiple trips.

Anyway.. is it necessary for me to provide the information of where i'm staying such as confirmation form for the accommodation?
*
All i did for the itinerary was this:

[Day 1](date): Asakusa [Stay]: K's House, (location and contact no.)
[Day 2](date): Shinjuku [Stay]: K's House
[Day 3](date): Mt. Fuji [Stay]: Sawanoya Ryokan (location and contact no.)

and etc.

Of course, in order to strengthen your application, any confirmation on air ticket or/and accommodation is a big plus.

so the itinerary can be as simple as that..  thanks for the info! i've got the confirmed ticket for the flight, i guess that would made it easier..  As for accomodation, i was thinking of making the booking after i obtained the visa.. so, in your opinion.. should i book the hotel before applying for the visa? or make the booking after visa has been approved?

And if you don't mind.. can you recommend any good accommodation in Tokyo which is not too pricey..  a hostel would be okay too..
*
For me, i prefer to have the visa first before booking (just in case). Of course you can cancel the booking later if anything happens, but it's a hassle for busy working people.

Accommodation-wise, i've stayed at K's House Hostel Asakusa.

Pretty decent price, quite clean, helpful attendants and fellow travellers, few walks from Metro station, convenience store everywhere, and if you're a beer person, there are a few vending machines just outside the hostel tongue.gif

There are many places which are cheaper, but reputation and worth-wise, K's House among the top smile.gif

If you have some cash to burn, try staying in ryokan. A budget of 6k yen per night will do.

Btw, agreed on the obituary thingy lol.

I'm thinking of getting a place to stay that is near to any JR stations..  i'm planning to buy the JR 7 days pass for my trip in march..  Would love to stay in Ryokan.. but my budget is quite tight.. hehe..

Any suggestion of what kind pass i should have while traveling in Japan?
*
JR Pass if you plan to visit other cities besides Tokyo. For example, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara, and etc.

Just around Tokyo? Forget about the JR Pass, Suica touch-pass card will do.

well.. i'm planing to visit Osaka & Kyoto too.. so that's y i think the JR Pass is an option i should consider..how far is Kobe from Osaka if we're traveling by trains or shinkansen that are covered by the JR Pass?
*
Tokyo to Kyoto shinkansen trip itself pays for the 7-day JR Pass, so every other usage is FOC.

I've not taken shinkansen from Osaka to Kobe. You should ask the veterans (living in Japan) in the neighbouring thread Club Lowyat Japan tongue.gif

Osaka to Kobe is less than 50km....shitman....who will take Shinkanshen from Osaka to Kobe?  Osaka Itami , Kobe , Kansai Airport all are under one Bay all 3 are so near.

At Shin Osaka Station there got Express Bus & Normal high speed train link Kobe > Osaka > Kobe . Nobody will take bullet train for just 50km

Maybe because he can abuse the JR Pass anyway? tongue.gif

By the way, 1 day is sufficient to go Disneyland & Disneysea or not?

Thank you very much!! notworthy.gif
*
If you plan to travel to those places by Shinkansen, by all means yes

what's the best transportation will you suggest instead of Shinkansan?
*
I would suggest taking the Shinkansen tongue.gif

But if you're on low budget, check out the overnight bus services from Tokyo. Good to sleep over and reach your destination the next morning.

Tat period is summer in Japan right?
*
Give you a general idea (exchange rate now 41):

Tokyo-Kyoto (Return bullet train ticket) = JPY 26,440
Narita Airport-Tokyo (Return express train) = JPY 5,880
Above total = JPY 32,320

Japan Rail Pass 7 Days ordinary class = JPY 28,300, see the difference?

If Golden Week, yes please follow Regentcid's advice. All transportation modes will be very busy, especially land. Though IMHO, one just wasting money visiting during that period, unless you're hardcore weaboo laugh.gif

I've had the same problem like yours last time, but having paid so much for Japan trip, so just simply walked in a random meido kissaten called Home Cafe and asked for eigo meido laugh.gif Got the only Eigo speaking maid (she's Canadian-Japanese mix), my luck really. Though i last heard, she's no longer there but you could try.

anyone knows if there is any cheap travel package for students?

i'm really interested in going to japan next year before graduating, checked a lot of travel websites, and most group tours are really expensive, costing more than RM 5000+. my budget is between RM 3000-4000  sweat.gif

cheapest one i found is pyotravel, but i'm not so confident in dealing with this travel agent since they seem to get a lot of negative feedback
*
If you're student, i'd suggest you go backpack style. Put a stop to expensive guided tours! Why pay others when you can DIY? drool.gif

RM5000 is enough for 8-9 days of Tokyo-Fuji/Hakone-Yokohama-Nikko trip inclusive of air ticket laugh.gif

hi,

i believe u better be prepared for full gear, weather for this year is quite extreme too.

so how many nights in total u will stay in Japan? from osaka to tokyo, by train or bus? fare? heard that if by bullet train, it will cost an arm or leg for the ticket. (RM500 one way??)

mind to share your which hotel r u staying in osaka and kyoto? as i will be going on Jan too.

tq
*
Yes it's very cold, by Malaysia's standard of course. Skinny people might need full winter gear, those big sized still can live with long johns and thick jacket tongue.gif

If you plan to board the Shinkansen (even once!), do get the JR Pass. More than worth it, so much that they limit the purchase only for foreign traveler, nihonjins drooling drool.gif

This has been discussed over and over and over again in this particular thread maybe more than 10 times already.

Haha daijobu Shazzac, i'm in the mood to explain. Or like the typical 'helpful' nihonjin, you know what i'm saying tongue.gif

bro,

actually this is my 1st trip to Japan, i will go to osaka, kyoto n kobe for 8days7nites, enough? any idea how many nites should i stay in each place?

i totally have no idea on the name of the Japan rail or transportation, mind to tell me some?

i knew SHINKANSEN is their rail system, rite? when will i use it?

nihonjins?? what is tis?

tq
*
So, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe? If you land/arrive at Osaka, so the three places are all around Kansai region. But if you come from Tokyo, that's an extra 1/2-1day of traveling. Staying how long, that depends on your schedule and budget, not cheap though especially with the current exchange rate brows.gif

In Tokyo, there is the famed 'main' JR Yamanote line, connected with a few Metro/Subway lines. If you want more information on Japan's train services, i'd suggest Wikipedia or this book http://www.amazon.com/Japan-Rail-Route-Guide-Guides/dp/1873756232 thumbup.gif

Also, i would suggest you read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan before you ask more questions. This forum won't have enough space to explain all, so read that first, ganbatte laugh.gif

thanks for the reply  smile.gif

i would love to go backpack style, but then i can't even read or speak japanese, and i don't think i'm gonna get through the visa application  sad.gif
that's why i'm searching for group tours
*
In Tokyo, no worries about the Japanese language. There are plenty of eigo signboards which are quite easy to understand (and cute too tongue.gif ). But for other cities, it'll be tough not understanding the basic of the language.

One method is, when you're asking a Japanese for help/direction, you could carry a guidebook and point at what you're looking for. Another is search for local JNTO-organized tour packages; they cater for non-Japanese speaking foreigners. The guides can speak English and Mandarin, and expect superb hospitality thumbup.gif (hmmm still have sweet memories from my local Fujiyama tour wub.gif )

Regarding visa application, it's easy. Just print out a bank statement of RM6k balance (there's loophole for this), submit your planned itinerary and other identification papers, and you're good to go smile.gif

The downside about group tours is, chances are the half-awake-breakfast at 7am-you be hurried from point A to B without knowing what happened laugh.gif . The joy is still with relaxed and flexible schedule.

If you know that particular place's name, you can just say it and then do some sign language if the person doesn't speak English. If you know  even basic Japanese, it would be better than none at all.

One time, I was at a train station and was supposed to meet a friend at the 7-11 nearby, I couldn't even see 7-11 within the row of shops on the left or right or opposite building.

I went into a shop and ask a japanese guy and he kindly walked with me to the 7-11 shop, it's about 200 meters away FYI.

I think if I was in KL, they'd just say ' go straight that way and turn left' then sour face!
*
For my story, i sesat in Asakusa, 1st day in Nippon, failed to locate Kaminarimon after walking blindly for 3 hours. Stopped a young salaryman (gomen i know you're rushing to work sweat.gif ) and asked for direction.

After finishing my query for direction, he just ran. Luckily i've read on their culture, so i just followed. Both of us ran for few minutes to a T-junction, and he pointed at the straight road and sheepishly said "go....there" laugh.gif
