Hello, I just got an increment of salary since last month, I plan to wait for maybe 6-8 months later to buy a 2nd car, I'm looking at a few namely Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid & Volkswagen CC, also open to other options. My budget for repayment monthly is around 600-800, maximum 1k and below, which means the car that I'm buying should range around 60k+. Would appreciate any advice and open to anything as well.

My main question is, if I do go for 2nd hand car, what are the few important things that I have to know and make sure of in order to not get cheated by dealers ? Also, which reputable 2nd hand dealership should I be buying 2nd hand car from ? Thanks !

My advice is just to get a new local car. 2nd hand car can be a gamble. You might need to ready extra cash after buying one in case it needs fixing.

what do you want for the car?
daily use? need better car to meet up with client? just from point A to point B?
and to buy used car like VW and hybrid is the worst choice ever, even worst you're not a car guy..

i can only suggest you reputable used car dealer, its destinyauto sdn bhd.. more than 30 years experience and no hidden fee..

Le random financial advice in a car sub forum: strongly advise not to get 2nd hand of your choice. Given your limited budget...:
- can you afford right now? If you have to wait for increment, then sounds to me you're trying to live on the edge...
- does your monthly budget include one-off refurbish (maybe +/-10k?? I guess depends on how good the 2nd hand is?) and also higher maintenance for a 2nd hand D segment car?
(*compared to a brand new A-B segment P1/P2)

... it sounds like you're pushing yourself to get a big nice car. It won't be nice very soon when things break down here and there.... Why not a brand new local B segment car, or settle with C segment 2nd hand?

If you want to buy Conti or hybrids, can you spare an amount of around 10~20k in case of any major repairs? If you cannot even take out this amount, better just stick to normal local or Japanese ride.

Personally if i am in 2nd market now with around 60k budget and want a bigger executive car can consider Toyota Mark-X, Harrier, Lexus GS300, mostly Toyota/Lexus without the hybrid as most of them are quite reliable and aftermarket parts are plenty.

Thanks, will consider Toyota/Lexus without hybrid, to all the other replies, thank you so much, I'm now either going to get a new Myvi or looking at Toyota without hybrid, about the mileage, I understand it's a common tactic for 2nd hand dealers to adjust the mileage to become lower, is there any way to check or avoid the trap ?

Actually what is wrong with Camry Hybrid? It's a very good and reliable car with a lot of parts.
If me I would not hesitate to go for it if it's within my budget and I'm looking for a family sedan.

The only way is to get your trusted mechanic to go check on the vehicle you interest.

Experience mechanic will know if the car condition is good or bad, some vehicle if taken care with high mileage is also worth to pick up compare to those low mileage with neglected maintenance.

Your buying range 60k+
You shortlist Toyota Camry 2.5 & VW CC which is >RM150k value car.. you need to realize you will be maintaining a RM150k car not a RM60k car…

My advise would be not to buy from dealer. Most likely the dealer would have reconditioned the mileage. Just go back to Toyota or VW MY, and ask the last service mileage recorded..and see the current mileage of the car.

Coming back to finances..even if the car is good condition..can you afford to run it? Have you checked the prices of the tires? I suppose you won’t risk your life and safety by buying some unknown China brand.

I think the Toyota Camry Hybrid is a solid buy but the road tax, and tyres as well as maintenance isn’t cheap. Also buy from direct owner where possible and validate the mileage with Toyota Malaysia. If the hybrid is heavily used the battery would be nearing EOL due to the wear from charge cycles. VW CC…haha I won’t touch it if its your primary vehicle.

rm60k is the sweet spot for getting a nice nice while you can still get a bank to loan it
usually the cars would be in 4-5 years of it's life, and depending on the model the price you're going to loan for would be still something you can sell and use as deposit for your next car or you need to top-up to clear loan to buy a car in the following 4-5 years.

if you're looking for a trusted dealer can pm me

current trend now is moving towards SUV's so sedans are less loved and would be cheaper to obtain used but never consider a hybrid or a car with too many fancy electronics

I suggest you get the Honda Accord gen 9.
2.0L & 5AT , low maintenance if no breakdown.

What do you need the car for?

If you're helping in transporting fruits supporting gf business, last thing you need is breakdown on highway.

A brand new car will reduce this risk, eg new Alza 62K plenty of room to load the fruits or finished fruit tarts to retail outlets like Family Mart.

IINM, I read some article some time back that said most car purchases are made on impulse and desire. Logical thinking hardly ever features highly on the decision making ladder.
