QUOTE(forlowyat1 @ May 9 2024, 01:20 AM)
I've been thinking for quite some time about buying a brand new saga. But considering the price, 40k(saga) is not a small amount to me. Therefore I'm thinking about maybe try looking in second hand market and see what hidden gem I can find...

Looking for a daily
I don't mind driving a manual, and I don't mind driving old cars or local.
As long as it's reliable, parts easy to find, I can fix it and maintain it myself since I'm a mechanic myself.

I'm not familiar with second hand markets or old cars in general. Therefore I'm wondering if there's anyone out there who knows quite alot about second hand cars and which brand or model to tackle.

What I've looked on are
Saga Flx
Wira
Inspira
Satria
Satria neo
Toyota SEG/KE70/GX/GL/Altis/Vios
Honda civic EJ/EG

If I'm not buying any, I have an old E36 sitting at my parent's home waiting to rust. Either spent the money restoring that or ditch the idea altogether.
Restoring it won't be small amount of money either, plus with the parts that are rare and hard to source 🥲

Thanks in advance to everyone that will be replying to this thread.

u buy new car, u are force to send to service centre for the sake of waranty. waste la ur talent, ur expertise. get 2nd hand and fix yourself, is way more good option

I see... I guess those oldshitboxes get you into lots of trouble in the past 😅
I'd definitely need a loan, and most likely aiming for the saga if bought new.

Thanks for the advice 🙏
*
If you going for loa the.n just get new as no bank will offer loan for cars exceeding 9 years and if the car you desire within range the interest is relatively for most part higher , so not only time and money you got to invest but higher Interest rate meaning you will be paying more for that 40k borrowing vs if you were to loan for a brand new Jap car.

I'll assume that u r a young guy around my kids' age. smile.gif

Buy something that is safe, reliable, comfortable, affordable and then fun. Not losing much value at resale time is also a big bonus, unless u already bought them cheap. Cars that appreciate in value with time is a plus but these cars will probably be older than you except a few 2 door models.

Buy used only with Full Service History from SC. Most are offered with 1-3 yrs warranty. If u buy a 2022/23 Persona, it'll still be under Proton warranty. Already lower than your 40K budget. 6 Airbags. Way better than a Saga in almost everything and safer. FC was okay on my rented car but smaller fuel tank than I'm used to.

1. Persona Premium ticks all the right boxes. 2022 above, MC2 models. Save 20k over new! Expect around 38K.
2. Persona Premium from 2018 for 20K. Use the 20K savings on that E36. I owned 2 E36s. 325i manual and an M3. Fun but can be painful with all the plastic parts.
3. Mazda 2 - Skyactiv from 2015. Reliable and Fun. Better rep than a Proton. Around 35K.
4. Lexus CT200h - Sporty, lots of mojo and excellent reliability. A bit underpowered and dated tech. 40K
5. Subaru XV - More powerful but also more expensive parts. Best Japanese built Q. Starts from 20K, find lowest mileage from year 2017.
6. BMW 316i F30 - Ultimate mojo. Watch out for those plastic parts. 40K
7. Mercedes E200 W212 - Very reliable for a Merc. Sublime but may be too much for such a young guy. Expensive parts. 40K

Be warned, 4-7 will involve higher cost of maintenance than a Proton/Perodua/Toyota/Honda B-segment cars.

E36, there is a well known parts supplier (potong) in Sg Petani. F30, Stuttgart & Bavarian Auto for parts. If u ever decide to buy, PM me for UK store where u can get new parts for Bimmer/Merc/Volvo cheaper than potong ones here.

You are a bimmer/merc mechanic so use that to ur advantage! Once u go teutonic, no oriental is going to cut it (but perhaps should wait a while until finances are a lil bit stronger?). I wish u well.

Actually, if I were to spend 40k, I'd just go for the saga. I'm adamant because spending 40k on a car with my current net worth feels like I'm over spending.

Anyways, lexus seems like a pretty good car, any model that you'd recommend?

Not sure about Peugeot.. fixed a few 308 hatchback. Not very good reviews from the owners. Never seen a 508 especially diesel on the road. But I'll look into it. Thanks alot

Peugeot petrol engine of 308 mk1 is a piece of shit, the 308 mk2 engine however is much better, but not without it's issue. Peugeot DW series diesel on the other hand can consider as one of the best in europe. You never seen one on the road is because it looks identical to the petrol 508. Only subtle difference is the 19" rim, black out grill, GT emblem that is recessed in the grill, double wishbone suspension (same as 407) and chromed exhaust tips.

If you are looking for power, less than 20k can get you a Ford Mondeo 2.0 ecoboost that puts out 240hp and shifted via a 6 speed wet clutch gearbox. Is a Ford, so you can expect the spare parts to be on par or more expensive than Merc BMW or Audi. Don't ask me how i know...

Depends. XV and Forester are locally assembled. The rest are Nihon imports and more expensive. But then Impreza, WRX & BRZ cannot be expected to be as reliable as the more sedate vehicles.

Good enough methinks, definitely better than most locally and Thai assembled jap cars. My son changed from an older 3 Series to the latest XV, so far all good. Overall, might be better than daughter's X1. ohmy.gif

Good day! That you so much for your information. This opened my eyes once again. I'm 25 this year by the way haha.

I've seen a few recommend persona but didn't mention all the safety features that included in them. I'm surprised when you mentioned that it has 6 air bags.

My E36 is the 328 Saloon. It's super helpful that you recommended a place to find parts. Sometimes I find it hard to source for the parts that I want. How can I PM you for the UK store? I'd like to know more as I might need to source for some parts in the future.

Saga/Iswara/Wira/Satria/Putra/Jumbuck/etc copyori from mitsu - poor rigidity, if you're okay with driving like a turtle and getting horn alot coz u cannot keep up with traffic speeds nowadays get one of these coz the power band is between 60-100kmh, but accidents at even speeds of (40-75kmh) with a current year Axia means your car will look like it's been thru a major highway accident with your hood, front grille, etc. smashed while the Axia would be having to just add some elbow grease to buff out the marks. Metallurgy and rigidity wasn't great for Proton cars back then. They're cheap to fix and maintain, that's about that. The one to aim for is a Wira 1.8xli, Satria GTI or Putra that isn't abused.

Satria Neo/Persona/Gen2/Waja - they have a lot in common and safety has improved a lot, if you're looking for something cheap but solid can consider these, remember lawan arus people driving these were hurt much less when they head on collision with older perodua cars like kenari/kelisa/etc. The bad is the fuel consumption and performance, the gearbox on them were terrible in terms of pickup and overall driving satisfaction. Maintainence is so-so there are alot of wrecked cars so cannibalising them for cheaper used parts is the name of the game, new parts especially if you want originals is monopoly by Eon / Proton.

Toyota's pre-Altis and Vios - looks horrible and drives terrible even driving a Vios Dugong you'll feel the NVH, fuel consumption and nippy-ness of the car in city traffic is so superior that it would've been considered a D-segment back in the day. Don't bother with old Toyota's unless you have a fondness for them like getting a nice silver-top or black-top or supercharger. First gen Vios is decent enough for basic transportation for today's traffic.
Older Altis and Camry that can be had for under RM20k might be too old with some problems going to creep up after you buy.

Honda EK/EJ/EG are collector items now, cheap ones are either in bad condition or not worth the effort to restore.
