No such thing la. A call does not mean YES PLS COOK FOR 20PAX. This kind of big order need to put deposit . I dont condone what they done but restaurant owner need to be street smart la to protect his business. Use common sense.

Lol no. I went to Japan and one of the restaurant i went to  requested for deposit to confirm seats. Just because one noob owner didnt request depo doesnt mean the whole Japan is like that. Without money, anyone can say anything. Things only get serious when money is involved. Its like asking ppl to gamble without money.

Lol no. I wanted to reserve tables for 2 pax and they still asked for deposit. And i only booked tables only. Reach there only order food. But deposit is nonrefundable and will be used to deduct from your bill

Its common practice if a local Japanese is making a booking then different story la. This booking is for foreigners. Common sense need to put deposit.

Most family run restraurant in Japan does't need deposit for reservation. If no show, they just removed the reservation tag on table. Unless you request special ingredient / require days for peperation then only need deposit.

Even Ex-Michilen 3 Star Jiro Sushi also no need deposit when making reservation. Alot people put him aeroplane, then angry and no more serving foreiners.....Michelin angry and take away all his stars.

That Japanese unhappy because in Japan culture, never put aeroplane. If cannot make it, must let people know in advance.
