I only gave three films from 2009 a perfect rating and Up in the Air is one of them. It's an amazing experience. Will post a longer entry on this.

The Matrix - 9/10
The Matrix Reloaded - 6/10 It's been quite a while since I've revisited the two sequels but I always remembered linking Reloaded the most out of the three movies but now, I see Reloaded as a pointless exercise. Neo vs 100 Smiths happened twice during the film, the car chase was visually stunning, albeit 10 minutes too long and was ruined by the stop-start nature of the sequence. And the worst part about the film is that it starts and almost ends with the same scene with Trinity falling almost to her death. The Wachowskis could easily omitted the scenes showing us what Neo was fearing which would have heightened our anxiety to see what he was fearing so much. And the ending.....WTF? That ending doesn't make me want to see Revolutions. It should have ended with Trinity letting go of Neo's hand. But no, it dragged on forever. And that rave techno music, it is so bloody annoying and really doesn't add to the mood but takes you out of the scenes. |

There was unnecessary pauses in the car chase which exaggerated the length of the car chase.

Accepted - 8/10
This is just one of those teen comedies that depend solely on the cast's likability. Long, Lively and Hill are all incredibly likable and the film just uses it to carry the film. Jonah Hill is one of the funniest comedians working today and it's not just his weight, it's his lines and the delivery. You watch The Invention of Lying or Funny People, every sentence he utters is comic gold. Of course, there's that cringeworthy Patch Adams type courtroom scene here but Long handles the scene aptly, I must say. 'Ask me about my wiener?!' That's so going to be my ringtone! And that Blake Lively - god! That's a face (and body) that could launch a thousand ships. I'd be more than glad if they killed Fox off Transformers and replace her with Lively. Passengers 5/10
You know my mad love for Anne Hathaway but this film is shit on a broomstick. It's bad on every single level imaginable. It's a poor man's Sixth Sense + Others + an aircrash scene from Lost. I'd rather have my eyes stabbed than watch this again. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jan 17 2010, 11:12 PM) 5/10 doesnt sound that bad lol. It's quite difficult to give ratings below 5. I mean if it was that bad, surely I'd left the room or hall. At least that is what I think. But it's tied alongside Martian Child as the worst film I've seen in January. L.A. Confidential - One my my favourite movies. Three staggeringly brilliant characters anchored with three equally brillaint performances, an extremely well-written and smart plot, assured direction, a classy period look, superb pacing... this has it all. When the moment comes where two characters meet, one an unstoppable force and the other an immovable object, and instead of going against each other as they have done up till then, they go in tandem, and one of the movie's best line ("... with a wrecking ball!") is said, that moment... it simply makes me want to yell "f*** yes!". I watched The Wizard of Oz a few weeks back. I can see how it looked vivid and fabulous in its day, and some of the effects still look pretty good today, but... damn! The movie is for the Barney crowd! I sure didnt expect it to be this childish! The 5-year-old boy inside me is still alive, but a 3-year-old girl sure isn't. And I remember LA Confidential - that was one hell of a year for the Oscars BP race. |

I always thought that the ending in The Departed drove home Scorcese's theme.
Berardinelli will always be a **** for calling Infernal Affairs a B-grade film. This post has been edited by kobe24bryant: Jan 24 2010, 03:17 PM |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jan 24 2010, 09:40 PM) What theme do you mean? Like when you're facing a loaded gun, it makes no difference whether you're a cop or a gangster, both die? I don't know if you were being sarcastic but yes, when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference as Costello points out.I liked his character in IA better. Unlike in The Departed where he got the courage to go against his employer only after he found out he was an FBI informant and might give him up anytime, in IA he makes the decision on his own (or maybe with some indirect help from his girlfriend's novel, which I thought was a nice touch). He realizes he is the one who holds sway over the mob boss and not the other way around, "why the hell should I take the risk and protect him when I have a high position job in the police force I'm comfortable with?" he asks himself, and sets him up. To me that works so much better. Also as I said, the Rollo Tomasi ending is better. The Third Man (1949). Eh didn't much like it. Bitterly disappointed. And I liked the character in The Departed more. It really shows what a two-face **** he is for betraying his father-figure. Shows what a spineless rat he really is. And in the end, he pays the ultimate price. |

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jan 25 2010, 07:57 PM) That's a slightly different perspective, and I essentially agree on the same points, but I do not see Andy Lau's character to be heroic. He is a gangster, trying to pretend he is a cop, trying to convince himself that he is a cop. I will however agree that Sullivan was more of a cowardly rat than his counterpart in IA. I agree with noob13. Lau seemed to me to really WANT to live the life of a police to be with Sammi's character (not good with Asian names), hence leading to the infamous 'I am a police! I am also a police' wails whereas Damon had no problem calling him Dad and screwing him 2 seconds later to save his own ass. Speaking of Damon, I'm about to watch The Informant!. The Informant! is a bloody good movie. It reminds me of a Coens type comedy done properly. f*** BAR. |

My Best Friend's Girl.
I don't know what is it about Dane Cook but his style of comedy is so offensive and repulsive that it is hard to watch any of his films with a straight face. I have never seen a romantic comedy that has pissed me off even after the lead gets the girl. This is the one of those rarities. Good Luck Chuck is another. |
