Hi all, I did not dig too much before posting.
Is anyone here in a committed relationship but not legally married in the country, and with no plans to do so, or close to anyone in this kind of relationship? (not sure if there is a term for that)

What would be the downsides for couples who are not legally married in this country?
What are the obvious legal complications? Can't legally have kids? (Exclude inheritance rights, social, religion and cultural perceptions please)

Thanks!

But if not married, say if one passed away without a will, that will cause difficulty right?

I don't know but there will be some goverment agency that will require marriage certificate like for the above case, perkeso, kwsp and insurance actually asked for it. But i'm not sure if they will process even without it.

Edit: if not any tom dick and harry can claim to be their "spouse".

Ops sorry. In that case, can't think of any entity that would require marriage certificate.

Not too sure, but if claim inheritance i think 'will' quite powerful, even more than marriage cert. I think the court will layan the 'will' > marriage cert. Lawyers will suggests you to do it, but not sure it's just because they want cari makan. But they say if no will, other parties such as children and parents have a percentage of what the decease leaves behind, if they choose to dispute, if no dispute then no issue.

But, maybe, for kwsp/perkeso/insurance, cert > will. Kwsp has nomination, but perkeso, the checklist is marriage cert to be entitled for it's benefits, as it's for "spouse and children". Not sure if a will can replace a cert in this case.

damnnn, really can't think of what entity will need it. Only can think of court and insurance.

If you're employee of MNC or any company that provides insurance in your remuneration package, then you'll find that your immediate family is automatically covered by the insurance. AFAIK you need to be legally married to allow your partner to enjoy that.

Beside that, tax filing can be done individually or with spouse. If your partner is not working or has less income, I guess you can combine to lower the tax brackets?

Note: I'm speaking entirely from own research, I'm not legally married.

The partner cannot legally made the important / life saving decision the best of his/her interest at the time of emergency.

For instance, when 1 of you got into accident or experience mishap which leads to emergency medical procedure / operation, you are unconscious hence cannot authorized the procedure by yourself. Your partner are in no position to place his/her signature to authorize the emergency procedure.

It called gf and bf relationship.......
The real question is what is the stoppage to marriage?

Not ready to have family....
Still young want to wet for few more years.....
Do not want marriage commitment and legal implication

Then ask whether u willing to wait it through
then u know what to do
