The transport ministry is nearing the completion of its review of a revised road tax framework for electric vehicles (EVs), with an official announcement anticipated by the conclusion of April 2024. This was revealed by its minister Anthony Loke during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between Warisan Tan Chong Automotif and Guangzhou Automotive Group on Saturday, Bernama reports.

The decision for the review is to establish EV road taxes at rates lower than those for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, he added. The move is also intended to stimulate greater adoption of EVs across the country.

Loke highlighted a key challenge in the review process, which revolves around the comparison of engine capacities between ICE and fully electric vehicles. Presently, EV owners benefit from a tax exemption, yet concerns persist among potential buyers that EV road taxes may surpass those of ICE vehicles once the period ends.

“The commitment of the government is to reduce (road tax) so that those who purchase EVs will enjoy an appropriate road tax fee,” he said. “We hope an announcement on road tax for EVs can be made before the end of April.”

The existing road tax exemption for EVs, introduced in 2022 and applicable until 31 December 2025, operates on a kilowatt-based calculation system. Unlike ICE vehicles, where road tax hinges on engine capacity, EV road tax is determined by the total power rating of its electric motor(s), with various power brackets dictating the base rate and any accompanying progressive rates.

So the announcement will be by this month. I guess vehicles which dip below 7.0s in a 0-100km/h sprint won't be cheap although the price of the vehicle may be affordable.

Honestly though, is roadtax structure that big a deal for your car buying decision? Just curious what your logic is. What are the sort of cars youre comparing between EV and ICE?

Probably the roadtax rates after year 2025 is too high for them and hence they waiting for new structure and see if it will be lowered.

There is soMe merit of concern

Because Anthony did mention the road tax of EV will be cheaper than ICE

It may be they hike road tax for ICE instead of actually lowering EV tax much.

If your ICE road tax is hike up say 50% , it may be the trigger for some

these days many car is with turbo engine the roadtax is very cheap, a class only 1.4 n c class only with 1.5 turbo engine which roadtax is only like below rm100 per year. If using the old EV roadtax calculation a tesla need to pay like 6k per year? that's a huge different.

Ahh got it.

So, is your point here then about value proposition or affordability?

You don’t think it’s good value to spend that 6k for roadtax because you feel it’s a waste? Or is it spending 6k for roadtax will be beyond your budget?

personally I feel 6k for ev roadtax a waste, unless you say 6k roadtax for hyper car like ferrari or lambo those then is ok for me. the money can better well spend on other place like travel oversea or having good food.

Haha. Cmon be serious. If cars are worth millions they should be paying taxes proportionate to their worth, and also the owner has the means to. Eg some of the NA engines pay around 12k I think for the 5L motors. Anyway back to your case.

I guess what I’m saying is, if you’re spending on a car worth north of 200k obviously you must be either an enthusiast or someone that values the experience of driving or just like a specific brand. I guess it’s a question you’re going to have to ask yourself, if that price matches the other criteria’s for you choosing the cars you’re wishing to compare - A-class vs EV with high performance (on a side note, these two cars are miles apart in what they do). I mean if value proposition is your primary driver, then yea like you said the 1.3l turbo Aclass with 180 or whatever HP is your bet right? With cheap roadtax and lower maintenance and tyre costs, etc. I guess we all want everything for the cheapest price, but alas tax is tax and we shouldn’t stop living and doing what makes us happy just because of it.

Goodluck with your decision!
