Foreigner rules, some too cheapo hotel cannot accept foreigners. Try trip.com or 携程app (Chinese language only) to book hotel in China. IINM, if the hotel cannot accept foreigners, it will say (内宾).

beijing? mind share itinerary? using alipay mostly right?

wan to see if can self go for first timer or just take tour package

They local ppl use WeChat Pay (China region). Alipay can use, but cannot transfer money to WeChat Pay. I bring cash there, ask local at the hotel to transfer into my Alipay acc.

Last time WeChat Pay used to be ok for foreigners use, now need local bank card. Alipay can register foreigners to use Alipay wallet, as they have some collab with Bank of China, just need to upload your passport up to Alipay to use the wallet.

If you want to get the best out of your China travel-
* don’t use Msia travel agent, try and get a local (eg Beijing) agent who can prearrange your itineraries (hotels and attractions) according to your budget. Best agents to contact is Ctrip (if can read Mandarin) or Trip.com (bananas). You can have them prearranged or when you reach your destinations you can visit their physical outlets to browse whatever available for that season. You can easily saved up to 30% going through this route. There are many blue dolphin (authorised Ctrip) agents all over China. They are super reliable and professional. For example, for some places, you pay for the entry tickets but they (the tour leader) will reimburse you back later if you are above 60 years old. But they usually can only reimburse into your Alipay or WeChat eWallet (apps) not TnG Alipay
* use TnG but use your banks to top up the funds there. You can use cc to do so but there is gonna be 1% charge soon.
* linking your credit cards to Alipay eWallet (apps) or WeChat apps is pretty costly because of the unattractive exchange rate plus a 3% surcharge. This 3% surcharge only applies to purchase above ¥200. So one of the best option is to bring cash and get a local to put it into your Alipay eWallet. You have to rely on this Alipay eWallet in order to use Didi, local bus, ordering via online store or pay for your advance hotel bookings or attractions. The good news is this Alipay eWallet got English versions. Set all of them up before your trip, not while you are there.
* for those bringing elderly parents, many of their entry tickets are free or discounted for those above 60. Some of the subways and bus rides are also free. You just need to show passport for age verification. These free/discounted are applicable for locals and foreigners
