KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Education department will call in a female teacher to explain her offensive remarks about a boy with disabilities.

State Education director Raisin Saidin said the action was to seek an explanation from her about the incident which has gone viral.

The boy's father discovered the disrespectful comments about his son when the teacher mistakenly shared the remarks and a photo of Fezan Ray's son, referred to as "anak bongkok", in a parent-teacher WhatsApp group.

The parent, who managed to screenshot and keep her messages, uploaded it on TikTok and it was widely shared among netizens.

"These students, especially those with special needs, should be treated with utmost care.

"The Sabah Education Department takes this matter very seriously. We not compromise with any actions by teachers that contradict the professional ethics of the teaching profession.

"The Sabah Education Department has initiated an investigation into this case and will summon the involved teacher for an explanation," he told the New Straits Times.

Raisin also said that the department has issued a warning to all district education offices, principals, and headmasters to consistently remind teachers not to upload any comments about students, either in the form of TikTok or other social media, that could tarnish the students' dignity.

The father had lodged a complaint to the Education Ministry through an online platform and planned to file a police report against the teacher today.

KOTA KINABALU: A father took action after discovering a teacher's disrespectful comments about his son, who has disabilities.

The incident occurred when the teacher mistakenly shared the remarks and a photo of TikTok user Fezan Ray's son, referred to as "anak bongkok," in a parent-teacher WhatsApp group.

Expressing disappointment, he said his son Ean was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder since he was three and attention deficit hyperactivity at six, along with his premature birth and medical procedures.

"I disagree with the way they are demeaning others. We have no choice but to have 'anak syurga' (special child) but they have a choice in choosing this profession (as teachers)," he said.

He pointed out that finding another school with special education curriculum in Sabah was challenging and would have to leave Ean at the same institution.

"For now, Ean will stay at that school as it is not easy to find other schools that provide special education curriculum."

Fezan added that he had also reported the incident to the Education Ministry via an online platform, seeking resolution through official channels.

"After 24 hours of posting it online, the teacher apologised to me... but they also want to settle it privately.

"But I do not want to settle it (that way) as I had referred the case to the Education Ministry," he told the New Straits Times.

He added that the teacher had filed a police report against him in response to the unresolved issue.

TikTok user Fezan Ray was disappointed to find a school teacher in Tuaran, Sabah, referring to his son as “anak bongkok” (hunchback) in a parent-teacher WhatsApp group.

Fezan’s son Ean was diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder when he was three and attention deficit hyperactivity at six.

The school teacher allegedly meant to send the messages to her colleagues but accidentally sent them to the parent-teacher group on 4 January 2024.

Fezan claimed the teacher expressed her delight that his son would soon leave her class.

She also allegedly implied in the text message that she would “torture” another student in class because the child’s mother has made lots of demands.
Fezan took a screenshot of the text messages and posted a compilation of the images on his TikTok account.

Within 24 hours of posting the video online, the teacher apologised to Fezan and wanted to settle it privately.

Fezan refused and lodged a complaint to the Education Ministry through an online platform on 6 January. He also planned to file a police report against the teacher. It appears that the teacher has also filed a police report against him.

Fezan said his son will remain in the same school because it’s not easy to find another school with a special education curriculum in Sabah.

The Sabah Education Department will be calling in the teacher to explain her remarks about the boy with disabilities.

State Education director Raisin Saidin said students, especially those with special needs, should be treated with utmost care.

Raisin said the department takes the matter seriously and has warned all district education offices, principals, and headmasters to remind teachers not to upload comments about students on any social media platforms that could tarnish the students’ dignity.

Kasi viral this teacher better. Most of the time those problematic teacher will just get transferred, especially in the kawasan pedalaman. Other poor students will just end up as their new victim.
