Hi Experts,

Just checking out some issue that i am having with my Nintendo Switch Online play.

been trying to play online with my friends from KL ( Nintendo friends As well for Switch ).

I am having an issue where I can only connect online to their room (for Smash Brothers Ultimate) if they are using their hotspot from their phone. The connection is not as smooth via hotspot.

However, if they use their home wifi, i will just not be able to get connected. will get an error of unable to connect to the other console.

from the discussion and testing, we are thinking that the issue is with the speedtype as i am using a 300mbs internet speed unifi, while my friend are using 50mpbs unifi and 300mbps maxix.

we suspect its because of the NAT type. Currently all of us are type B.

with that, wanted to check with you guys if you know how to change our NAT Type to A instead.

any guides?

thanks.

Idk what Nintendo is using for their online services, nor how does your setup work, but heres some info regarding dedicated public IP/shared public IP

Unifi 500Mbps and below (iirc) all use shared public IP, which makes direct game server hosting unavailable as youre under CGNAT and is sharing the same IP with multiple users

Maxis all plan by default is shared public IP, you need to pay extra RM10 per month to subscribe to dedicated public IP

If you want to port forward your switch and host a game server, you cant do any of that unless you have a dedicated public IP, or just using plain P2P with software

Idk how or why it only works when youre connected to mobile hotspot, I can only guess that you guys are on the same network? As your wording is a tad bit confusing.

From a quick google, NAT type A is port forwarding, which none of you or your friends can do as all of you are under shared public IP, including mobile data

To make it less confusing
Instead of shared public IP, refer to it as private IP

So, Unifi (low speed plans), Maxis (all plans), TIME (100Mbps), Allo (all plans) give you private IP
It's because ipv4 has already ran out so they can't afford to give everyone a public IP

For Unifi you need a good reason (eg, CCTV), they will come on site to verify
Maxis will give it to your for an extra RM10 monthly
Time, just upgrade plan
Allo, RM100 one time fee

U may try 1.1.1.1 to see it make any improvement or not.

You can try mapping your Nintendo Switch mac ID with a fixed IP then placing it under DMZ allowing all access to UDP/TCP ports bypassing the router built in firewall all together.

Tag your Switch's mac ID with a fixed private IP under your DHCP table.

Then place that IP in your DMZ list in your router. It'll bypass all firewall and open all ports but only concern will be security which is the tradeoff.

oh god this sound so interesting but at the same time, i am a freaking noob in network stuff. i am so clueless on the stuff that you mention.

i know this is pushing it, but any chance you can share a youtube guide link to set those up?

Better if you ask your vendor which supplied the make model of your router how to go about it with their after sales support.

The general guidelines already mentioned:

1) Map your Switch mac ID with a fixed IP for your DHCP server(router)

2) Place that fixed IP under DMZ table of your router.

Just 2 steps very easily done.
