I am beginner in web programming, just tried your code and no idea why lookup.php didn't work. I played around with the multi-line input control: Can use "<textarea>" HTML tag, and can define how many "cols" and "rows". Maybe need to wait for expert.

Please advice. Thanks. shell_exec return null / false if any error. for better error control or show error message, you may use exec. Sorry, I gave wrong advice, have deleted post #4 and #5.
I thought everyone is same like me using XAMPP to host local PHP file, so that can easily install command-line program. I really don't know about web hosting environment, Linux or Windows, no idea how to install "whois" there.

Your advice may help, as we can request web hosting support team to install (missing / required) particular app / plugins.
