does paying utilities such as using Maxis Pay Platform entitle the 1% cash back?
*

You should be eligible for the 1% cashback. According to their T&C:

fees, and/ or any other applicable card fees imposed from time to time;
(b) cash withdrawal transactions;
© e-wallet top-up transactions;
(d) payment of insurances and/ or takaful;
(e) the following government related payments:
a. Court costs (including alimony and child support)
b. Fines
c. Bail and Bond payments
d. Tax payments
e. Government services
f. Postal services (Government Only)
g. Intra-Government Purchases (Government Only)
(f) payment to charity and/ or social services organisations;
(g) gambling, betting and gaming related transactions;
(h) quasi cash merchant transactions (e.g. cryptocurrency, foreign currency, money order);
(i) void transactions, reversals or refunds; and
(j) such other transactions as GXBank may determine at its discretion.
QUOTE
The cashback value will be calculated and rounded down to the nearest two decimal points.
Cashback amount must be at least RM0.01 in order to be credited to your GX Account.
The cashback will be credited to your GX Account by the end of the next day after the posting date of the Eligible Spend transaction. In exceptional cases, crediting of the cashback could take up to two (2) weeks from the transaction Posting Date.

GX REWARDS EXPERIENCE CAMPAIGN TERMS AND CONDITIONS
*

So based on the latest T&C:
QUOTE
Eligible Spend using the GX Card shall not include the
following transactions and no Campaign Reward shall be awarded in respect of such
transactions (“Excluded Transactions”):
(a) payment of new card issuance fees, annual card fees, card replacement fees,and/ or
any other applicable card fees imposed from time to time;
(b) cash withdrawal transactions;
© e-wallet top-up transactions;
(d) any transactions to the merchant, AirPay Malaysia Sdn Bhd;
(e) any transactions related to SSPN Prime/ SSPN Plus savings;
(f) payment of insurances and/ or takaful;
(g) the following government related payments:
Description
Courts Costs (including alimony and child support)
Fines
Bail and Bond Payments
Tax Payments
Government Services
Postal Services (Government Only)
Intra-Government Purchases (Government Only)
(h) payment to charity and/ or social services organisations;
(i) gambling, betting and gaming related transactions;
(j) quasi cash merchant transactions (e.g. cryptocurrency, foreign currency, money order);
(k) void transactions, reversals or refunds; and
(l) such other transactions as GXBank may determine at its discretion.
Now I notice that they've clearly added Airpay Malaysia as part of the exclusion of 1% cashback this time.

TongCN So for your case, using Maxis Pay platform to pay your maxis bill should be ok. But avoid using Shopee to pay any of your bills, cuz it seems that they're using Airpay Malaysia as their pay bill merchant.

In March 2024, I was in China with family vacation, link GX Card to Alipay but problems keeping me from successful payment, in the end - BigPay link to Alipay, Bigpay no problem. However, I am able to use GX Card in lots of Chinese Apps, eg. Meituan, Didi, 12306 and so on. I did not try on wechatpay.
*

Since GX Bank is relatively a new bank, they had to use the latest 8 digits BIN number standard for its card number.
It is the future card number standards for Mastercard and VISA, and meant to supersede the current standard of 6-digits BIN number that is in use since long long time ago.
But it is believed that some overseas merchants did not or have not update their POS systems to support 8 digits BIN number from Mastercard/VISA cards due to technical reasons. Therefore as a result for the end user, the transaction will get declined. I believe this issue won't happen if the merchant update their system to support 8 digits BIN number.
This is more towards the merchant's problem, nothing got to do with the country you visit.

If you say that linking your GX Bank card to Alipay, and the payment keeps unsuccessful, but no issue when using other China apps like Meituan, Didi, 12306 and so on, then I guess is Alipay is yet to update their system to support 8-digits BIN number? hmm.gif

Btw perhaps did you or anyone here tried to add Wise card to Alipay app and/or WeChat Pay, and whether it works in China?
QUOTE(#Victor @ Sep 12 2024, 04:22 PM)
What problem u encounter? GX Card need to delete and re-add most of the time when the transaction get refused to make it works but sometimes it doesn't work so need to pay with other card or balance.
How is the foreign rate for BigPay vs GX?
*

GX Bank uses Mastercard, so it'll follow Mastercard's exchange rate.
https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/ge...t-currency.html
For GX Bank, it's 0% bank fee.

BigPay nowadays uses VISA card, so the rates would follow Visa's exchange rate.
https://www.visa.com.my/support/consumer/tr...calculator.html
But, BigPay nowadays charges up to 1% bank fee

Yes, when linked the GX card in Alipay App, and used in China. It failed 9 out of 10 attempts.
It seems GX card is not so well supported when using it abroad.

I switched back to use Wise card instead, which success transacted most of the time.
*

When was that (when you travel to China and use GX Bank in Alipay app)?
You said it failed 9 out of 10 attempts... Then what merchant (or what type of merchant) was it when you get successful transaction ones?

I assumed you've enabled Overseas Transactions setting in GX Bank app? Cuz if I remember correctly, you need to enable that setting manually as it is not enabled by default.

Just tried on May, June, September this year, last attempt was last week.
Already enabled for oversea trx, linked in Alipay APP, and used with merchants like MiXue, Luckin chainstore, also Shopping Mall, Hotel, mostly failed to charge the GX Debit card. In very few attempts, it charged succesfully for the same merchant which it failed earlier.
It's a time wasting to keep experience the failures then switching to other cards linked within the APP.
*

The moment you see that the transaction fails on Alipay, did you try to delete card, and then add your GX Bank card again to Alipay, and try make another transaction to see if it work?

Also, did you or anyone here try to add your GX Bank card to WeChat Pay? If yes, does this "failed transaction" issue still happen?

Ya, for online transaction using GX card, sometime need to approve in APP.
*

"Remove and add" was not an expectation, so definitely NO~ Why make own life miserable? sweat.gif
It is the workaround that is advised by GX Bank customer service, saying that this should solve the transaction fail issue thereafter.
And if this ever happen again, just repeat the steps again, which is remove then add card again.
They also said that they are still investigating the root cause, and no timeline is given on when will this issue to be resolved.

Not sure if this will happen on WeChat Pay...
Anyone else here tried to add GX Bank card to WeChat Pay?
Note: Make sure you've switched the WeChat Pay service in your WeChat app to China Mainland.
Otherwise, you'll only see the "This service is no longer available. As WeChat Pay MY has discontinued its payment services on September 1, 2024..." error.

Use the Search function in WeChat, type WeChat Pay, then tap Enable.
Then open WeChat Pay (Me>Services), tap "..." on top right corner, tap Select Wallet Region, then select China Mainland.

is there any fee charged by GX Bank if i were to withdraw cash overseas?
*
QUOTE(Toku @ Oct 4 2024, 01:52 PM)
Last month I tried to withdraw TWD in Taipei using Standard Chartered ATM (on the same day):

1. Using GX debit card, I paid RM2719.29 for TWD20000.
2. Using SC Jumpstart-i debit card, I paid RM2707.06 for TWD20000.

Assuming SC don't charge their oversea ATM usage and both SC Jumpstart-i & GX debit do not have any forex transaction charge, GX is charging around RM12 for withdrawal oversea using an ATM.
*

As you can read on their FAQ, GX Bank themselves don't charge for foreign ATM withdrawals at the moment.

If you see there's an additional charge/fee, then it is likely that it is charged by the ATM bank itself, but not from GX Bank.

I wanted to avoid paying extra for the bank transaction fee when using credit/debit card.
So the plan is to withdraw cash from atm there.
The rate is much more better than getting it from money changer here
*

I wanted to avoid paying extra for the bank transaction fee when using credit/debit card.
If that merchant supports card payment, just straightaway use GX Bank card, as it is 0% bank fee. Don't need to think about cash.

If you have TNG Visa card, that one is also 0% bank fee.
Almost all other Malaysian debit/credit cards out there, would usually charge around 1-3% foreign transaction fee.

Alternatively, if that merchant supports JPQR payment (equivalent to our pink colour DuitNow QR), you can try Scan/Pay using TnG ewallet, or other banking apps like Maybank MAE too.
More info here: https://technave.com/gadget/Malaysians-can-...year-37906.html

If that merchant don't accept neither card payment or JPQR, then only you think about cash.

I m travelling overseas at least 4 times a year and also trying to beat the system. But unfortunately its not feasible due to withdrawal fees.

Besides ATM withdrawal fees by that Japan ATM bank operator, I wonder do they have "extra charges" if opt for Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) for ATM withdrawals there? hmm.gif

does gx card work on alipay app?
*

Can.
But if you experience payment failure when making Alipay payment in China, try remove card then add back the card (reenter the card details) again on Alipay app.

Suggest to standby adding another card in Alipay as well, such as Wise or other debit cards.

Alternatively, you can use your GX Bank card, to withdraw cash in any China bank ATMs. The rates will follow Mastercard 0%, and the limit follows your daily transaction limit.
As what I know, there's no ATM fees there.

Do note that those are last year's posts. Things might have changed now.

Do consider bringing other debit cards also as a backup, such as TNG Visa Card (need to pay annual fee RM8), or Wise card (no annual fee).
Otherwise, you can use your GX Bank debit card and withdraw cash on any China ATMs.
As long the cumulative amount you withdraw does not exceed the equivalent of RM1000 within the calendar month, then there'll be no additional fee from Wise for subsequent amount withdrawals for that month.
As far as I know, China ATMs don't charge additional ATM withdrawal fees (unlike some other countries).

oh, thanks for your advise. grab app u mean our malaysia grab app right? is follow gx rate or grab have their own rate?
Actually my friend will be going to work in singapore. So he need to have either cash or card to pay his expenses for 1 month before he get his singapore dollar salary. So what is your advise on the way to get cheapest singapore dollor? money changes rate will be cheaper then gx rate? but cannot keep too much cash also right?
*

Another alternative is, if your friend has an online banking apps, you can also do cross border QR payments as well.

When in Singapore, launch the Malaysian banking app (e.g. Maybank MAE or Public Bank MyPB), look for Scan QR and scan the merchant's QR as usual, enter the amount in SGD, then you'll see the exchange rate on the spot (including the actual balance being deducted in RM), then confirm the payment.

So far I notice, the exchange rate appears the same as what you see on Google. Do note that not all Malaysian banks supports Cross Border QR payments. I personally tested out Maybank MAE and Public Bank, it works fine.
https://www.duitnow.my/Cross-Border/index.html

Another thing to take note is, avoid using TnG ewallet as they're now using Alipay+ network for non-Malaysian QR payments where the exchange rate will follow Alipay+'s rate, and most of time I see it is more expensive than what you see on Mastercard/Visa/the one you check on Google.

*
QUOTE(jhleo1 @ May 21 2025, 05:06 PM)
If travel to Thailand, which payment method best to use? Tng ewallet better than gxbank card than wise card?
*

There's no short answer for this. It depends on the merchant.

For places that accepts card payments (e.g. 7-Eleven, convenient stores), use GX Bank card since the exchange rate uses Mastercard 0% bank fees rate.
Meanwhile for Wise card, it's usually more expensive than Mastercard 0% rate, but you can still bring your Wise card as a backup.

For places that accepts QR payments (does not accept card payments):

If it is YOU scan their PromptPay QR code (e.g. street food stalls, food court), then I recommend using the banking apps of Malaysian banks you have accounts with, as long as they support Cross Border QR.
The notable examples are Maybank MAE, Public Bank MyPB, CIMB OCTO, etc.
IMPORTANT: It must be a Business merchant QR. Personal QR (e.g. you transfer money to your Thai friend) will not work.

If it is THEY scan your QR code (e.g. 7-Eleven, convenient stores), then just use TnG ewallet (where the payment network will be under Alipay+, which is usually more expensive exchange rate compared Mastercard/Visa/the one you check on Google.

Worse come to worse, use cash. Look for money changer.
Or alternatively, you can insert your GX Bank card to Thailand bank ATMs to withdraw cash. The exchange rate will be the same as Mastercard 0%.
If you use Wise card to withdraw cash, then it will deduct THB balance first. If your Wise doesn't have THB balance, then Wise will convert it for you from whatever currencies you have; and it'll follow Wise's own exchange rate.
Whichever card you use, remember to select option that withdraw as local currency on the ATM machine.
https://wise.com/help/articles/2935769/how-...th-my-wise-card
https://wise.com/help/articles/2977949/an-a...ng-my-wise-card
When you try to withdraw cash in ATM overseas, some bank (not all of the banks) may charge additional service fee, which it will stated on the ATM's screen before you confirm to withdraw.

dont plan to change much cash. Fully using GX bank card is it ok? or need to change more cash?

heard also visa and master credit card not user friendly there.

thank you
*

Do take note that many shops there don't accept Visa/Mastercard cards even if the shop has a card payment machine. Even if does, make sure the merchant charges you their local currency (CNY) rather than they convert to MYR for you.
If you let them convert to your home currency (MYR), the FX rates will become more expensive and not worth it.
Also, do double check if the merchant doesn't impose any additional service charge.

QR payments are widely accepted there. Do install Alipay app, and sign up for an account. As for the payment method, pair it with your GX Bank card. If you have Wise card, do pair it too as a backup.

If each transaction costs CNY 200 and above, Alipay will impose 3% service charge. To avoid that 3% charge, make sure the amount is CNY 199.99 or less. This also applies to WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay).

You can also insert your GX Bank card to any China ATMs to withdraw cash. The FX rates will follow Mastercard 0% rate.
As far as I know, China ATMs won't charge you additional fees unlike most countries that tend to impose additional charges due to an overseas issued card.
You can select Chinese or English language interface on the ATM there, so don't worry even if you can't read Chinese.

What will be the passcode for ATM? my GX bank code?
Yes, enter the same 6 digits PIN of your GX Bank card.
On the China's ATM, you select the CNY amount you want to withdraw, once you got your cash, you'll see your GX Bank's balance has deducted in MYR. Pretty straightforward.
The withdrawal limit is the same as your GX Bank's transaction limit settings.
https://help.gxbank.my/Personal%2F%2Fcards/..._the_GX_Card%3F

Can direct use GX bank without pair pair with Alipay?
Technically you can.
But don't be surprised if you see many shops there (e.g. restaurants, convenient stores, boutique stores) don't even have a card payment machine.
And even if there is, they may only accept UnionPay cards but not Visa/Mastercard cards.
But of course, if you so happen to see a Visa and Mastercard logo sticker/labels around the cashier, then you can be rest assured. biggrin.gif

GX Bank card uses Mastercard payment network.
So, as long that merchant accepts Mastercard card payment, then it should work just like any other Mastercard cards you have from other banks.
If you see a card payment machine on the cashier, you can just try and use your GX Bank card and wave it onto the payment machine to see if the transaction went through.
It may feels like a hit-and-miss thing, so do manage your expectation.

If you have other overseas-travel-friendly debit cards such as Wise card or TnG Visa card, it's a great idea to also bring it along as a backup. Don't rely 100% on GX Bank card only.
