Unless your debit card or credit card is tied to Union Pay, I will not rely on it for making payments in China. Load up your TouchnGo, it is affiliated with AliPay and you should have no issue paying with it, however a lot of small traders only accept WeChat Pay which non-China mobile users cannot register for the China version. Even beggars in China has a WeChat QR display!

Been using WeChat Pay china version for years without issue, can tie to normal Visa/Master to make transactions, even online ones also.
Now Alipay also can tie to Visa/Master cards and make payments without issue for the vast majority of merchants.

Both are pretty tourist friendly now, and of course tng also a good fallback.

Weixin pay can tie to credit card but cannot transfer peer to peer only merchant. Same with alipay+ n tngo.

Yea but recently I feel p2p also getting looser, paid to a few ppl by scanning their personal QR in Alipay, managed to make payment. Maybe they enabled personal merchant QR or something, not sure, but seems like its much higher success rate than before, but just personal anecdote.

Edit: Here’s the transaction details, in the recipient name also got bracket saying it’s personal qr (maybe cannot through Alipay+/TnG but can directly through Alipay? Edit*: Scanned through TnG and the same QR code also works in TnG)

So just use the TnG (Alipay) when travel to China?
Con: 1% conversion feeΒ  sweat.gif

But the 2% cash back (oversea usage) from TNG Visa card will not get any benefit right if tie to AliPay.

But will qualify for the 1% overseas online payment cashback, same as GX basically
Generally small amount is better using Alipay tie to card (no fee under 200 RMB) so either use GX/TnG to get the 1% cashback or any cc u have with good rewards for overseas(foreign currency) spending, sometimes Alipay got voucher additional discount also.

Over 200 RMB will have 3% fee so at that point probably better if use TnG (or if your cc give good enough rewards to offset the difference can still use Alipay)

But probably good to keep sikit cash on hand just in case and also can find lubang to reload Alipay balance sikit also. But I think in most situations can pay either direct Alipay+card or TnG no problem.

FYI, GX Bank card linked to Alipay doesn't work in China. You may need to use alternative card like Bigpay/Wise.

it does work actually

just doesn't work every time

fails periodically and may have to retry a couple times then it works.
