Proton was established in 1983 as a joint venture between HICOM, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation to bring the grand dream of a ‘national car’ to life.

And in 1985, the Proton Saga rolled out — hailed as Malaysia’s very own first car, though in reality it was little more than a rebadged Mitsubishi, delivered with generous hand-holding and technical babysitting from its Japanese partners.

Launching the WAJA — the first Proton model to be largely designed and engineered in-house — in 2000 and the GEN-2 — powered by the first engine developed by the company itself — in 2004, the company continues to build up its engineering and technical capabilities and today enjoys wide-based support from the Malaysian population as a symbol of the country's on-going industrialization.

For 40 years, we, the Malaysian people, have suffered from high car prices, primarily due to Proton. Interestingly, when we examine car prices over the past four decades, it's evident that they haven't increased significantly despite inflation.

Before the invention of Proton, car prices were considerably cheaper in Malaysia before 1983.

The moment Proton was created, the old government decided to introduce a tax which can make foreign vehicle prices to increase for Malaysians by no choice to support and buy Proton cars. This causes the car price to be among the second highest(2nd) in the world after Singapore.

Proton had been protected 40 years through higher taxes on imported cars since it was first established in 1983. This protectionist policy has deterred foreign investors from investing in the country’s automobile market.

We need to revisit this policy of imposing higher taxes on imported cars. Revise the import tax structure on vehicles.

This can be illustrated by comparing prices in the United States.

A 2014 Honda Accord 2.4 and Toyota Camry 2.5, for instance, were priced at USD$22,000.

A 2023 Toyota Camry LE: starts at USD $26,220.

Even top-of-the-line cars in Malaysia cost only around RM60,000. This indicates that, in reality, car prices haven't experienced substantial inflation over the past 40 years.

We used to be able to purchase a brand new Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sunny for perhaps around RM40,000, which is only a modest increase from the RM20,000 of two decades ago.

For four decades, we've been paying considerably high prices to safeguard Proton's interests. Moreover, Proton receives hundreds of millions in grants from our government every few years, which are funded by our hard-earned taxpayer money.

Considering all the protectionism and the suffering that all 34.4 million Malaysians have endured due to overpriced cars, one might expect more from Proton than simply rebadging an outdated Honda,Mitsubishi,Suzuki,Renault,Volvo and Citroen.

Is there no sense of xxxxxx,Proton?

It's quite disheartening. We've suffered for four decades, and all Proton can offer is a rebadged vehicle.

What are your engineers and designers working on?

As Malaysians, we have the right to know, especially since we've been paying elevated car prices for 40 years, and our taxpayer money has been directed to Proton in the form of grants. This is indeed disheartening.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Proton has consistently been an assembled car brand, and it's regrettable that they have relied on technology from other companies.

Nevertheless, the founder of Proton has always maintained that Malaysia could produce a national car entirely independently. How much has been spent over the past 40 years?

Billions of Malaysian Ringgit have been invested.

Proton has had collaborations with

Mitsubishi (Saga, Wira, 1.6L Waja, Arena pickup,
Perdana, Putra, Juara van, Inspira),

Lotus Campro ( Waja, GEN•2, Iriz, Savvy, Persona, Saga,Suprima S ),

Citroën (Tiara),

The 2nd generation Proton Perdana is based on the 8th generation Honda Accord.

The Proton Waja production included three different variants, each equipped with one of three different engines:

the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi 4G18,
the 1.6-liter Proton CamPro S4PH/CPS,
and the 1.8-liter Renault F4P.

World record!!!!!

From 2018 until now, they have been partnered with Geely/Volvo.

The 2nd generation Proton Perdana is a mid-sized four-door saloon manufactured by the Malaysian company Proton.

It was unveiled on December 11, 2013, as the successor to the original Proton Perdana.

The 2nd generation Perdana is a rebadged and reengineered version of the 8th generation Honda Accord.

Spending 40 years in this industry without improvement is a waste of money and doesn't prioritize safety.

Proton says X90 rear fire not caused by mild hybrid battery, still under investigation

August 23, 2023

Proton's 40-year history is kind of like a little joke. They often took existing cars and tech from other companies, put their Proton name on them, and called them their own.

It's like saying, 'Why make something new when you can just borrow it?'

So, for a long time, Proton has been part of this 'rebadging joke,' making us wonder if it's truly a Proton or just someone else's car with a new label.

Proton borrow ideas from other manufacturers rather than creating entirely original products.

Malaysia's Khazanah selling Proton stake for $412 mln to DRB

January 16, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Reuters) - Malaysian state investment arm Khazanah Nasional said on Monday it will sell a

42.7 percent stake in car maker Proton Holdings

to autos-to property conglomerate DRB-Hicom Bhd for 1.291 billion ringgit ($411.87 million).

Khazanah said the divestment was made with a

price consideration of 5.50 ringgit per Proton share

and DRB-Hicom, which is linked to Malaysian tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary, will have to take a mandatory general offer on the remaining Proton shares.

It was not immediately clear if the deal was all cash or cash and stock.

Proton and DRB-Hicom shares were earlier suspended from trading. ($1 = 3.1345 ringgit)

March 15, 2012

Malaysian company DRB-Hicom's shareholders have approved the company's acquisition of a 42.74% interest in Proton Holdings. The group will acquire this stake from Khazanah Nasional.

The group expects to complete this acquisition within seven days from today, 15 March.

Following the acquisition of this stake, DRB-Hicom will own 50.01% of Proton.

Proton Holdings Bhd (5304) will be delisted from Bursa Malaysia.

Proton delisted from Malaysia’s Stock Exchange

May 24, 2012

The local Automotive Focus Group (AFG) reports that Proton has been delisted from Bursa Malaysia, almost 8 years since joining the local stock exchange, after new owners DRB-Hicom succeeded in securing 98.6 percent (as at April 26) of Proton shares, above the threshold of 90 percent required to privatize Proton.

Starting with the buying of a 42.74 percent stake in Proton from Khazanah Nasional Bhd at RM 5.50 a share early this year,

DRB-Hicom then launched a mandatory general offer for the remaining shares it did not own, valuing Proton at RM 3.02 billion.

With 98.6 percent now in hand, DRB-Hicom can compulsorily acquire the 1.4 percent still with investors.

Without the public eye of scrutiny, DRB-Hicom will have the flexibility to embark on long-term plans to make Proton a more profitable company, and not worry about short-term results that the stock market players are more concerned about.

Approvals from shareholders on any future corporate exercises will no longer be needed once Proton becomes private.

Proton has a history of employing a practice that involves taking existing cars or technologies from other manufacturers, making minimal changes, such as replacing the logo and branding, and then introducing these rebranded products to the market.

means u pop the drain cover
but that thing is useless one its like on off the drain hole only.. either fully open or fully sealed

because of the rubber seal or dunno what blessed water retention policy the car has it will forever be collecting water
so that means i need it to be able to drain all the time WITHOUT letting mickey mouse/roaches in.

First, the weaknesses: noisy suspension and dashboard. However, the price point offers a 40% discount compared to a Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0.

It features an efficient MIVEC engine.

I haven't replaced a single part besides the usual regular maintenance. With a mileage of 120k after 7 years, I'm still using fully synthetic 5W40 engine oil. I changed the stock Proton transmission CVT oil to J4.

The spark plugs are still in good condition since day one, which is amazing.

Some soundproofing and changing the brake caliper pins to silicone-coated ones would enhance the quiet driving experience. Oh, and the Lotus handling is superb.

"Affordable, Playable, and Fun to Drive Family Car

I bought this car from a used car dealer, and although the previous owner didn't really take care of it, the car is fun to drive and rev-happy. I purchased a manual 1.8 version.

During city driving, I never rev it over 3k, which makes it a fuel-efficient car. On the highway, revving at least 4k provides a smooth and safe feeling.

The highest speed I've reached so far is nearly 200 km/h. I recommend it to those who wish to have a fun and easily modifiable car in an affordable way."

The smart guy gets it: Mitsubishi quality with Proton ride and handling. It's a rare combination – a 1.8 L engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system)

I've had the car for 10 years with no major issues, except for one instance when it was in the workshop due to a clutch pump failure

It's economical to run, comfortable for long-distance trips, and powerful enough for a spirited drive.
