Yes, there is no tax relieve for hybrid, so the car will be expensive when import. On top of that fuel is still cheap in Malaysia so general people will not consider hybrid. In short. it is not economical, logical to bring it in.

The main issue is our MYR.

Look at the Prius specs overseas. The only way UMW can give it a competitive price is to make it CKD and remove many of the extras, like the current CKD Cross Hybrid. If they bring in Japan assembled AWD top-spec model (loke the Prime version in western markets), will likely be approaching RM300k. At that price, you’re asking a HEV/PHEV like the Prius to compete against a full BEV like the Tesla Model 3/Y already.

Look at the Harrier. Toyota don’t want to compromise its quality and only assemble it in Japan, but as a result UMW don’t want to bring in the 2.5L AWD version because the pricing will be too close to the Lexus NX series, so we only get the 2.0L FWD version.

I think it’s the same for Prius too. As far as I know currently Prius is only built and assembled in Japan.

Nop, not really. A lot of Japanese company still dealing direct Yen with MYR in Malaysia thus why Japanese products still not so terrible hit by high increase price. Not all country deal with USD, as they also suffer a lot of tax/charges when exchanging it back to their own currency.

The main purpose is Hybrid not really tax free as compare to those EV, so not worth bring in.

I'm just like you, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high because I don't think it will come to our country blush.gif

Toyota is under UMW

Peugeot’s Malaysian distributor is now Bermaz, known for its association with Mazda. Bermaz also took the Kia brand this year. Both Peugeot and Kia were previously under the stewardship of Naza

BAuto’s subsidiary, Dinamikjaya Motors Sdn Bhd (DJMSB), was appointed as the new distributor of

Kia vehicles in Malaysia.

Dinamikjaya holds the right to distribute and sell Kia vehicles, sell genuine parts as well as provide after-sales services.

Very expensive to even bring in a recon unit. Taxes alone makes the car not worth buying over local ckd cars

Price for a brand new one from UK is already 220k myr. Most of the recon imported is either from Japan or UK and factoring taxes, would be close to 400k for a prius. No wonder no recon dealer wants to import it in unless you provide the capital upfront

Japan car of cz import from Japan will be cheaper..
2023 listing around 4m jpy meaning approximately 130-140k.. I not sure total tax how muxh..
If you take the same amount of price of other model eg gr86 which selling around same value and in our recon market selling near 200k... So I guess this prius shall stay around 200-250k? I not sure how the tax calculation, is it only calculate by car value or it will use mix or value n year

They can't make it cheap enough for export.

They also can't make it simple enough for local assembly.

At this point, likely will lose out to EV from China.
