What I like about S5 is the vari-angle LCD, enabling you to shoot from any angle, from high during crowded places or from extreme low - on the ground... this is definitely an advantage when come to photo shooting.

The rest of the features almost the same except some people may prefer Lumix lenses, will opt for Panasonic FZ8.

I too support Canon S5 IS. I once own a S3 and it does wonder for me. The vari-angle LCD sure is very helpful in getting pictures of different angle, high view or low view and even side view. laugh.gif

Canon g8??? biggrin.gif...

but for me... save few more RM.. and get low entry of dslr..

people always said that.. people behind the camera is more important than the camera itself.. i do agree.. partially

but camera do play important role...

Yeah, its true. But once you have gotten into DSLR, its like diving into a pool of poison! First you'll get a camera with its kit lens. Then you get bored of your kit lens, you get a longer focal lens. Then your on-board flash cant light up the subject of your long lens, you'll get an external flash. Later you'll be buying other lens for other types of photograph like landscape, potrait, macro....Then you learn that you cant capture the environment mood with flash light, you'll get faster lens with bigger aperture, f/4 - f/2.8 - f/1.8 - f1.4 and so on. And filters comes in ...CPL, ND, IR, soft, stars......The never-ending buying list just keep on going and going..... thumbup.gif

I highly recommend FZ18. thumbup.gif

FZ18 have 28mm at wide angle, whereas S5IS have 36mm.
FZ18 also have RAW support.

Check out the photos posted by FZ18 users.

One of the hundreds of FZ18 shots.

Wow, the pic seems good to me. If you were to considered S5 IS or DMC-FZ18, I'd say go get the FZ18. Wider coverage of 28mm really is a big advantage there! thumbup.gif

One more thing I like about the FZ18 is that it weighs in at 400gms (with battery).

The S5IS is 550gm.

Some nice macros.

what I dislike FZ18 is the flexible LCD does not serve any purpose... they only allow you to lift out the LCD screen but doesn't allow you to have variation of angle.... if only the LCD like Canon S5... I would go for Panasonic FZ18.

On the other hand, one more consideration b4 you buy Panasonic FZ18... as this is last year model... Panasonic may come up with new model to replace FZ18....

mmm. fz18.. good one...

n.. one more thing.. as for me (which is low budget but with a heart of photographer =)) ).. as u move along ur hobby.. u find a need in low light condition? which either in good ISO (low noise), apature, IS and last but not least FLASH.. in which S5 support the usage of external flash..

and also easy access in menu and other option in which i feel that panasonic might have better.. for example my s3 is quite difficult to use manual focus and altering few setup such as ev, iso on the run.. while g7 got a dial similar to dslr that assit u to swith tose function easily..

while fz20 (i'm refering with the camera that i have knowledge only) got a dial ring that can assist u in manual focus..

n wide angle is a bless...u can crop to zoom in picture but u can't crop to widen the view..
well...

FZ18 was launched after S5IS. tongue.gif
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_po...mcfz18&show=all

The best thing about Canon S5IS is the flip-out & twist LCD thumbup.gif
But a salesman told me if you're not careful you can twist it beyond its limits and the LCD is gone.
Some people may like the external flash option on the S5 but for me this will only increase its weight and bulk.

Honestly speaking, if you really want to buy external flashes, wide angle converter, tele converter, .... you're better off buying a Canon DSLR.

Since you already have Canon in mind... why think so much again, just go to the shop, grap one and start shooting. Different people will give different suggestion / recommendations. The suggestions and recommendations can go on and on..... by then, you will get more confusing. Just zoom in what you wanted, and if that particular model can give you what you wanted... then don't think much - go for it!

Yeah, go try it, get your hands on it and handling it at camera shop and see if it really satisfied you. You should try other cameras as well, some of them might feels better in your hand, you wont know it unless you try them. That's how I got my camera, it feels so good in my hand compared to others that I tried. icon_rolleyes.gif

Canon has better marketing than the rest of the field.

It doesn't mean they have better technology, which translates to better picture quality.

Just got my Z18 and I'd say its pretty impressive. Anyway here's the reason I chose z18

1) Stronger zoom w/o compensating quality
2) Awesome lens
3) Wide Angle
4) EVF is better - S5IS's EVF looks crappy & unrealistic (EVF = Electroniv Viewfinder)
3) Li Ion Batteries - AA batteries for S5IS means they have way less powerful flash and limited technoogy (That's y S5IS has the flash slot)
4) Light weight - U will really notice this when u have a long shooting session and also when u're at maximum zoom u're more relaxed.
5) Strong Flash
6) Much Cheaper

Bought mine with a surprisingly insane deal from Harney Norman @ Ikano

RM 1450
Z18
2 X 2GB
Tripod
Casing
Screen Protector

+RM150 and u get a 5 year extended warranty

told u all already go to the IKANO wan la... they don't mind u bargainin coz the camera dept is shifting to another location. So they wanna clear stock as well. That why can get cheaper. Also think u'll nid a Bargaining for DUmmies hahaha. I go Fotokem also can get 1470 2GB HD SD card lol!!

Use la the cheap technique

1) squeeze a lowest price.
2) Say wahh i go another shop (then u name shop and location) cheaper than u this this price. U can do that for me o not?
3) My friend ask me come here he buy here so cheap this this price. I'm sure u can do that price.
3) Wah ur price is interesting, ok i give u straight cold hard cash now. What price u give me?
4) Wahhh not bad, ok like this, U give me one extra SD card/ battery / etc. I confirm buy from u now. Wont squeeze anymore.
5) aiyoh no cash now, I'll see how la. Nid to withdraw. (then He'll prolly say "OK la u got CC now i give u this price for CC")

*now u buy the unit*

6) This is when u joke with him abit, if u got balls squeeze him some more. Then while u bodek him say la he good saleperson, u'll recommend more frends to come see u bla bla.
7) when he setting up & testing ur camera u ask, eh u also got tripod ah? u sell how much? he'll give u a very cheap price also, then u ask him wahh ok la.. fren fren u bundle in also la. then he'll either give free another accessory or sell to u at cost price.
8) b4 u leave make sure u shake his hands and ask him for his name again. Then u say thank you and I'll remember u, u're a really good salesperson. (u do this so next time u wanna buy accessories or upgrade or buy another unit, he'll take care of u kao kao and u can get a really good deal next time as well)

Ok la all the best!

Walau i post this here, all the camera shops gonna go broke man. tongue.gif

HAVE FUN!!

FZ18 is the best of the 'really big' zoom cameras.

Guys, I was thinking of obtaining the DMC-F728. Whats your views on the camera? They're also having a promotion on the panasonic website. RM1499 with Lumix Camera Case and 4GB SD memory card. Is there anywhere else I can get it cheaper?

I like S5IS coz:

Zooming when shooting video, not sure Pana can or not.

AA Battery for many days shooting if cannot charge battery, littium sure die. AA can bring many and still can buy alkaline.

Can use external flash coz got hot shoe.

But SX1 the brother to S5 is out. HD Video, CMOS sensor and 20x Zoom
