777 for sapphire HD3870 or 798 for PNY 8800GT.
Slightly go through few page and seems like ATI lose a bit of framerate against 8800GT but produce nicer colour is it?
HD3870 runs cooler than 8800gt right?

recommendation on crossfire motherboard?

Gigabyte x38-dq6 and abit quadGT looks weak.

left Asus p5e/maximus formula and DFI X38-T2R not to forget Foxconn X38A.

definitely X38 mobo, both card can run at X16.

for P35 mobo, 1 card runs at X16 while the other only runs at X4.

Asus blitz formula which has both cards running at x8 got quite a performance gain compare with p35's 16x/4x.

While both cards at x16 on x38 is only slightly better than blitz formula running x8 on both cards

I would say depends on game, some games dun utilize xfire that much thus the tiny increment in performance so 16x/4x and 16x/16x doesn't differ much.

Most I saw also 16x/4x and 16x/16x different around 15 fps, and it depends on the resolution you play also. Crossfire got better advantage with higher resolution.
