Friends,

I was checking my ETA details last night and was wondering if the first name and last name is normal and I am worried that we may be denied entering Australia due to this issue.
When I checked the ETA app, my full name is under the "Family name" column, I remembered this was not editable because it was entered automatically when we scanned our passport via our phone using the ETA mobile app.

However, when I checked my ETA grant letter, I noticed that there is no "Family name" and "First name" categorization, details as below,

Its 'normal', because the Malaysian passport has no delimiter for Last Names and First Names.

So the whole name becomes the Last Name.

But believe it or not, Australian immigration and their Smartgates can handle this.

The frontline airline staff at the airport is a separate question altogether.......

(To be fair, on the Malaysian (and Singaporean) side, they understand)

Just sharing my experience in applying Aus visa using ETA last year:

take the chance actually bought the flight ticket then only applied for VISA, have around 4 months ahead of time to get it approved and fly.

Heard cases of not easy getting VISA approved, research around and seek some advice at various forum and group chat. I got it approved within a week with me and my wife and my kid (1 year old)

A note, for the requested supporting i put to the max to avoid any follow up. ie; annual leave approval by superior/company, epf statement, investment in shares, house loan, payslip, all my bank accounts, flight tickets, accommodation details, marriage cert, job letter offer and etc.

Was worried initially but the outcome was positive, the VISA was approved within a week with no hiccups.

So you and your wife and your kids ETA application was not pulled for "additional processing"?

Border security can be a bit racist one… Chinese are usually portrayed as smugglers of food items, Vietnamese and Thais are often shown to be drug smugglers as is anyone of South American and/or African origins.

Malaysians have been shown to be potential airplane jumping illegal fruit pickers.

AMDK usually light “crimes” like weed from Bali or Thailand visit. AMDK are the most suci murni species on beautiful Mother Earth.

A travel influencer has been confronted by officials and fined for walking through an Australian airport with a single rose she had not correctly declared on her passenger card.

Lays Laraya says she accidentally breached customs laws when she was gifted a flower by cabin crew on her Qatar Airways flight into Perth recently.

The travel addict, who has racked up hundreds of flights to more than 60 countries, argued she had not tried to sneak the flower into Australia and that it was an innocent mistake, not knowing it was a prohibited plant.

But officials took a hardline approach, stopping her in the airport and fining her $1878 for knowingly providing false or misleading information on her arrival card.

A Spanish traveller has become the first person fined under beefed-up biosecurity laws after he failed to declare meat and cheese in his luggage.

The 20-year-old man had his visa cancelled and was fined $3,300 for carrying more than one kilogram of undeclared raw pork meat and cheese.

The man was stopped at Perth airport last Tuesday when 275 grams of non-commercial pork pancetta, 665g of non-commercial pork meat and about 300g of goats' cheese in his luggage weren't declared.

OMG! I just studied the CBD Parking areas for Brisbane's Queens Street Mall... you're not kidding! Better just pay a taxi instead! And here i was thought renting a car was cheaper.. those parking rates.. dear god man! that's a whole F-ing alternate budget!

If you are in South East Queensland between now and 5 Feb 2025 (subject on who wins the state election on 26 Oct 2024), public transport is a flat $0.50 per trip for a 6 month 'trial'.

Yes take a train from Brisbane to Helensvale, switch to the Gold Coast Tram to Broadbeach, and end up on Tweed Heads, and it'd cost a grand total of 50 cents for that whole trip.

Simple answer: don't drive into CBD of any major Oz city. The parking will bleed you.

Even just 5 years ago it wasn't that bad. Since Covid reopening, inflation has skyrocketed and these parking areas took the opportunity to suck more blood.

However, public transport isn't cheap either. So if you are a group of 4 or 5, it may still work out viable driving and parking.

Nothing is cheap in Australia.

Harsh. Milk and dairy products, peanut butter, even coconut milk for cooking believe it or not, to name a few, are cheaper in Australia vs Malaysia.

But yes, as a general statement, driving in the CBD of any major Australian city is strongly discouraged.
