Wrong, there are drivers, they're just built right into the OS because the hardware are fully manufactured by Apple only. Also, Apple includes by default a lot of drivers that you don't need, to ensure that for the normal user, when they plug something in, it'll just work.

Windows on the other hand is a software company that does not make hardware, therefore the hardware manufacturers have to write their own drivers to ensure their hardware can run on Windows.

If you were to buy a third party peripheral, chances are you'll need to install OSX drivers before you can use it anyway. Printers are one example although Apple does already support a lot of printers out of the box, and provides even more drivers via an optional install from the OSX install DVD.

I think the OSX dvd should cover everything that makes your ibook works from top to bottom. the only thing that makes you worry is the projector, printer. that's all i think that you would need extra solution. i wouldnt want to imagine they leave the screen or keyboard driver out, that would be disasterousss.

Use ccc and clone everything to an external, and start a fresh install. if anything goes wrong. you can always recover.

If you want to install OS9 later just make sure you check the box "install OS9 driver" during HD formatting and 1st installation procedure.

but i dun think mac user will go back to OS9 after using OS X. unless you still want/using the old old software that only support by OS9

There is no need for such a drivers download. All the drivers and softwares you need are built into the operating system either OS9 or OSX. Get yourself and OS installation disc and you will be up and running.

try to do a software update on mac os 9 first and make sure all firmware patches are up to date first...then try installing it or you might need to re-do from 9 again.. alternatively... try installing it via firewire target mode... which should be faster...

Well, as we all know, Apple has many different version of iBook and I am not sure how different it will make to the OS installation.

My experience is with my 2nd-hand iBook G3 700 where I have to dupe the CD from a reliable source to install MacOS 9.  Prior to that I tried using the *ahem version* and it failed to complete the installation.  So now (if not mistaken) my MacOS 9 is v9.2.2 or v9.2.3 - can't confirm this as too lazy to power up the iBook now.    tongue.gif

9.2.2... i encountered before that a certain model could not directly install 9.2.2. But could install 9.2 then upgrading it to 9.2.1 to 9.2.2. Think it was an iMac. But was your disc a retail or from a certain model?

err... not really true... during the old days... mac os 9... i remeber i had to download ATI drivers for the Power Mac G3 or was it G4s installing from retail version of 9.2. Cos i remember something will happen if i do not have tat ATI thinggy installed

if you try to use a powermac g5 installer on an emac 800MHz... you can't get audio from booting directly into os 9...
