Hello, I've been wearing DW / G-Shock watches in the past, I feel that it's time for an upgrade. As I'm reaching my big 30, and my taste of many things have changed, including taste for watches ( I'm not a watch enthusiast ). I'm looking for a watch that represents maturity which reflects my age and taste.

As I'm under a budget, and I do not wish to splurge on expensive watches, my budget is probably at or around 300-500. All I'm looking for is a good quality timepiece that will lasts me a few decades if not a lifetime. Any other brands that sifu can recommend for me to look at ?

Orient or Seiko used, i purchased a Orient for 550 and Seiko for almost 1k 4 years back. You can buy Ball, Breitling and Omega around 5k if u really want to flex but having a seiko or orient , heck even Alba i are really high quality watches. DW is more like a fashion watch but the ones i mentioned i feel are really good watches. Also you need to know about movement automatic or quartz. Automatic is fancy but quartz is maintainces free so all the best.

Something like this. Now I'm looking for something more formal and mature, like those classic style.

Up your budget to RM1,000 and you'll have plenty of good choices like (in no particular order),

- Orient
- Timex
- Casio
- Seiko
- Sea-Gull (Aliexpress Sale)

Go for stainless steel if you using day in and day out. Leather only for functions cz prolonged wear hand bit sweaty and not comfy.

Also watch face try and match the ave color of your clothes.

Thanks for all the advice guys, appreciate it. Just wondering if u guys can chip in some advice, which is better ? Quartz or Automatic ?

I've googled and seems like Quartz is the one that most people would say it's more accurate and more reliable ?

i just started this watch collection hobby, and i choose seiko 5 automatic. for me, automatic watch abit more fun. u have to keep it alive. some power reserve up to 40hours, 70hours, etc. u can interact more with the watch. like adjusting the date, time everytime the watch no power. and need to send for servicing every +-5years once.

but for quartz its simple. just put it on ur hand and enjoy. just need to change the battery every 2,3 years.

I see, I also tend to agree with you. I love to interact and be as close as possible to my watch, it feels even more personal to me, part of my life. So I guess I will go with the automatic, as it kinds of needs me to wear it daily, which is what I'm going to do, the service part also seems interesting and fun, just like servicing my car. tongue.gif

Take a look at Orient Bambino. Even though slightly above your budget of 500, but well worth it I think. Can be found for under 700 in shopee

P/S - Sorry for bumping thread.

I'm keeping my eyes on the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80, since after researching, it's within my budget and according to many reviews, it's one of the best if not the best watch anyone can get on the market for that price point. The build quality is top notch and what took my attraction is how beautiful the blue dial and overall design is, that and it's an automatic movement.

I got one question though, it seems like the watch case and the metal strap is match in heaven, but there is also a leather strap that is made for it, is choosing the strap just pure preference or which is better ?

Because it's an integrated bracelet, you would need to get a custom made strap if you want to go down the leather route.

But Tissot's official website have the PRX Powermatic 80 model with a leather strap, isn't that the official leather strap that Tissot launched back then ?

Oh apologies I misread your message haha.

The typical thinking for watches is always get the bracelet if your budget permits, then you can get an additional leather strap should you wish to.

That is because if you get the leather now, and later you want to get the bracelet, it will cost a lot more.

Plus, for leather, if you want one later, it can be customised if you feel the official option isn't to your liking, but for bracelet the option will be limited.

I see, ok got it. I will get the one that comes with bracelet and then buy an additional leather strap. I still really prefer the overall look and feel of the leather strap.

By the way, why is it called a bracelet and not a metal /stainless steel strap ?

It's interchangeable, but because bracelet is almost exclusively refering to steel, while strap is more associated with leather, people use it for clarity.

I see, thanks for the clarification.

Just curious, I know nothing about watches, Tissot's PRX will be my first and probably last watch. I'm just wondering is Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 a watch that would grow in value and still be relevant in NA years to come ?

Buy, wear and enjoy the watch. When you enjoy wearing it, value will be the least to care about.

I'm definitely getting the blue color one, it's just pure stunning. The other variants which is black and rose gold (?) doesn't speak to me.

Sorry to bump thread once again.

Is the PRX Powermatic 80 self-winding ? Correct me if I'm wrong, there's 2 type of winding watches, both mechanical, but one is hand / manual winding, and another is self winding.

Manual winding means that the wearer have to wind the watch every time the time stops to power it up. But self winding means the watch would power up itself automatically when worn ?

Yes to all your questions

Self-winding = automatic (watch term) = perpetual (Rolex term)

Thanks, so in other words if the watch is for example not worn for more than 3 days, which will be after it's power reserve limit and the time stops, just put it on and it'll automatically adjust the time itself ? Sorry in adv to ask many questions.

Ohh, a bit confused at this part. So as long as I wear the watch daily, and the watch doesn't stop completely, then it will automatically power up by just wearing it. But if it stops completely after 3 days, I have to pull the crown and manual wind it to power it up ?

Tissot PRX lug to lug length is on the longer side.

suggest to try it out the store first to see if it fits your wrist size.

try getting something smart casual which you can match dressy shirt and your usual polo-T or just plain t-shirts.

mechanical means manual wind required

automatic has rotor for auto-swing to get the movement runs

Powermatic 80 is using Tissot's own modified ETA2824 which allows 80hrs power reserve, and it is automatic.

if you're keen with a integrated bracelet watch such as PRX, with lower budget... can consider Citizen nj0150 aka Tsuyosa.

similar design, automatic... can get it below 1k locally.

get into automatics if you really are into watches, else you are going to hate the experience of winding it /resetting the time every now and then.

I mean 300-500 is kinda tough now bro unless u sticking with casio.

Under 1k consider alba...pretty much seiko under the hood without the pricetag (but if you really look around there are some quartz seiko in that range of 700-1k with sapphire glass and all).

tbh cant go wrong with the japanese here...1k ish tissot lo..but the build quality isnt really all that great if compared to a similarly priced seiko/orient/citizen.

Anything more see your tastes how.

oh and pleas try them on first! buying online sure difficult to gauge how its going to wear in real life (since our wrists are never the same size shape and etc)

I'm going to try out the PRX Powermatic 80 this week hopefully if I get the time.

I have no problem with winding occasionally, in fact it would feel more personal to me. But I thought automatic watches doesn't really require a need for winding except for some micro adjusting of the time and date if it gets off. Because the rotors moves according to our arm's movement so I was told that is the same as winding ?

yes, but once you put it down a few days it stops running. Then youll need to reset it and give it some winds.

Accuracy will drift, btw prx is a good choice, i recommended that to a friend who isnt into watches. So far so good

Ah yes, when I get it the watch for the first time ( and when and if I not wearing for few days and it stops ) then i'll wind, I kinda like the feeling of winding a watch, although I have never tried yet.

Yeah just really love everything about the prx 80.

Btw questions to anyone - Can recommend me a Watch Winder ? Although I will only have one watch for a long time, would also like to put it in so it'll wind automatically even when not wearing, and also for display.
*
i havent use one before...if im not using i rather let the movement rest...why bother with unwanted wear right?

regardless after 5-7yrs or so the watch will probably require servicing (might be longer depending on movement and usage). Tbh i dont see the need for a winder unless u running something very2 complex like a perpetual calendar.

What im saying is...just use only until something is wrong, then send in.

psst, get a jewelry tray from shopee, the soft material wont scratch your watch case if you are using it daily. Beats putting it directly on hard surfaces...wont immediately show wear, but over time yes

regardless after 5-7yrs or so the watch will probably require servicing (might be longer depending on movement and usage).

It's funny u say that now, I just saw an article that putting a watch on a watch winder when not using it, will actually cause more harm ( wear and tear ) to the watch, better to let it rest and still when not wearing, and wind it again before wearing, now that all make sense. tongue.gif

Yeah I plan to send in the watch for servicing every few years or if there's something wrong. For storing, I was thinking of putting back into the Tissot box casing, will that suffice ?

As long the crown is pushed in and your not keeping it under direct sunlight you're all good bro🤣. Just avoid putting the watch directly on any form of magnets la (phone, speaker and etc).

I just leave it on the jewellery tray,so i can pick it back up daily. But if you want to keep away sure, the watch box works👍
