Russian army forces Kiev's troops to leave outskirts of Staromayorskoye — DPR's politician
"I would even say that the initiative is in our hands in the Vremevka area," Vladimir Rogov said

MELITOPOL, September 20. /TASS/. The Ukrainian forces have retreated from the outskirts of Staromayorskoye in the Vremevka area, where they had been trying to gain a foothold for a long time, the leader of the movement We Are Together With Russia, Vladimir Rogov has told TASS.

"There has been success in the Vremevka area. Near Staromayorskoye the Ukrainian troops have in fact retreated from the outskirts of this village, where they had been trying to gain a foothold for a long time. I would even say that the initiative is in our hands in the Vremevka area," Rogov said.

As the Russian Defense Ministry said, the Ukrainian army has been making unsuccessful offensive attempts since June 4. On September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Ukrainian military had lost 71,500 soldiers, 543 tanks and almost 18,000 armored vehicles of different classes during this period. Putin stressed that the Ukrainian counter-offensive had been futile.

Ukrainian troops decrease activity on combat line of engagement in DPR — Donetsk leader
Denis Pushilin also noted that according to his "impression and information received there," the situation around Rabotino is also beginning to stabilize

MOSCOW, September 20. /TASS/. Ukrainian troops have decreased their activity on the combat line of engagement in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), DPR Acting Head Denis Pushilin said.

"On the situation overnight: I see that all active actions on the part of the adversary have decreased, including in the area of Avdeyevka and Maryinka," he told the Soloviev Live TV channel.

He clarified that south of Donetsk, the adversary has conducted few attacks over the past 24 hours and, "by all appearances, has begun to regroup." "There will be either a redeployment or a reinforcement - we will find out in the coming days. For us, this is also a good opportunity to concentrate our forces in various directions," the Donetsk leader added.

Pushilin also noted that according to his "impression and information received there," the situation around Rabotino is also beginning to stabilize.

Russia’s Krasukha EW System Forcing Ukrainian Fighter Jets To Abandon Missions After ‘Navigation Fails’

Russia’s Krasukha electronic warfare (EW) system is forcing Ukrainian fighter aircraft to abandon combat missions through intense jamming of all avionics systems in the aircraft, an informed source told RIA Novosti.

According to the interlocutor, the Krasukha electronic warfare system can completely suppress the on-board electronics of Ukrainian fighter aircraft. As a result, Ukrainian Armed Forces aircraft return to base using landmarks since their navigation “fails.”

“Krasukha” can influence enemy electronics at a distance of up to 150 km.

Earlier, on September 13, the RuMoD reported that Central MD’s Krasukha-S4 electronic warfare systems were forcing aerial targets flying at extremely low altitudes to evade radar and visual detection to gain hide and expose themselves to air defense (AD) systems.

There is evidence to suggest that Russia has stepped up the use of its vaunted Krashuka EW system, and it’s using the system far more aggressively.

As far back as June 2022, the RuMoD had reported that the Krasukha system was being used to prevent radar imaging of the battlefield by Ukrainian MALE drones, but there had been no reports of high-power jamming. Blinding of onboard avionics requires a lot of electrical power.

Understanding the Krasukha System
The Krasukha is a family of EW systems designed to electronically shield ground targets and aerial targets operating close to the ground, such as attack helicopters. The system prevents detection as well as attack by the adversary.

During MAKS 2019, KRET displayed the following three EW systems

Unified Ground Interference Module 1L269EH (Krasukha-2) to thwart detection by airborne, tethered, or elevated radar.

Terrestrial electronic suppression module 1RL257EH (Krasukha-4) to disrupt missiles and PGM RF seekers and data links. Reconnaissance module 1L265EH (Moscow-1) to detect and evaluate threats across the RF spectrum.

Deployed in combination, the above three systems are able to cloak from radar-based observation and protect from precision attacks hundreds of square kilometers of area on the ground.

The systems are able to disrupt airborne (aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, satellites, aerostats) radars, elevated ground radars, X-band guidance radars, GPS signals, RF seekers on missiles and glide bombs, and data links.

All systems are mobile and can be redeployed in 20 mins in summer and 40 mins in winter.
They operate between 2-3 cm in an X band with an energy potential of 50-65 db(W), covering 360 deg in azimuth and 60 deg in elevation.

The Krasukha system was first introduced into Russian service in 2015 and was reportedly used by Russian forces during their Syrian campaign. It’s likely that the system has matured following operational deployment.

Use of Aerosol Screening
In a related development, Russia is now also using aerosol screening to screen targets from detection as well as attack.

While EW systems, like the Krasukha, can screen targets from radar Imaging and thwart radio frequency missile seekers, they cannot screen targets from optical imaging by aircraft and satellites or protect the targets from missiles with optical seekers.

On September 17, Sevastopol city governor Mikhail Razvozhaevcity announced that the military was using aerosol camouflage.

“If you see smoke in the South Bay area, then don’t worry. According to information from the Black Sea Fleet, standard aerosol camouflage means are used. Yes, the smell is unpleasant, but it is absolutely safe,” Razvozhaev wrote in his Telegram channel.

Aerosol spray can prevent optical imaging of targets by satellites of the US military Keyhole constellation or the commercial Maxar Technologies WorldView constellation. Aerosol clouds can also degrade the ability of Storm Shadow / Scalp cruise missiles to identify their targets.

In October 2022, it was reported that the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TsNIITOCHMASH, part of the Kalashnikov concern) supplied the RF Ministry of Defense with a batch of optical-electronic countermeasures ammunition that creates a masking aerosol screen to protect vehicles, including armored vehicles, from high-precision weapons.

The 3VD35 protective aerosol ammunition has the following features:

Calibre – 76 mm, length – 290 mm, weight – 1.8 kg. Application temperature range – from -50 to +55 degrees Celsius.

The optoelectronic countermeasure ammunition is fired towards the enemy and creates an aerosol cloud capable of shielding armored vehicles from high-precision weapons with laser, optical, and thermal guidance systems.

Aerosol shells can be fired whenever a satellite is making a pass over the target, or the target is likely to come under attack by cruise missiles and/or drones.

Conclusion
Typically, before a coordinated drone and missile strike on Crimea by Ukraine, US airborne and space-based ISR assets mount intense surveillance of the Crimean peninsula to select targets and identify the AD systems deployed for their protection.

US RQ-4 and MQ-9 drones equipped with SAR fly for hours off the Crimean coast to radar image potential targets. US Topaz (radar imaging) and Key Hole (Optical imaging) satellites make repeated passes over Crimea to photograph the target and upload them into the seekers onboard Storm Shadow missiles to facilitate recognition of the target.

With increased deployment of Krashuka systems and the use of aerosol cloud-generating shells, Russian forces will be able to severely curtail US ability to identify targets and image them for attacks by cruise missiles.

Increased use of the Krashuka system now, as compared to earlier, is most simply explained by the increased availability of systems as a result of stepped-up production.

However, it could be that Russia was not using the advanced capability of the system to deny the US and NATO a chance to study the technology deployed.

Since the start of Russia’s Special Military Operation (SMO) in Ukraine, Russia has been very restrained with the use of high-technology weapons in its possession, including its top-of-the-line stealth fighter Su-57.

Russia is conducting the SMO in a manner such that it retains its ability to fight NATO. Retaining such ability is critical to deterring NATO intervention in the conflict and consequent escalation.

Combined attack of the AFU on Crimea

A few hours ago, Ukrainian formations launched another missile strike on Crimea. 11 Su-24M bombers took off from the Starokonstantinov airfield, five of which were carriers of Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles.

Having flown to the border of the Odessa and Nikolaev regions, the groups of aircraft split up: nine remained in approximately the same area, and a pair went south to Ochakov. Eight Storm Shadows were launched around 12 o'clock in Crimea.

🔻 At the same time, reconnaissance groups of the Bears PMC noted that two Su-24M, passing at a low altitude of about 40 meters above the water, launched from the Black Sea. And before this, Ukrainian planes fired three AGM-160 MALD decoy missiles to mislead air defense systems.

Crews of the Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system of the 31st Air Force and Air Defense Division shot down five cruise missiles over Cape Tarkhankut and the Belbek airfield. Three Storm Shadows fell in the Verkhnesadovoye area - the target was likely a former military facility near the village.

A few hours before the attack, a reconnaissance drone of an unidentified type took off from Kherson, which, rounding Cape Tarkhankut, occupied a patrol area west of Kacha and directed aircraft. It is highly likely that he was shot down by air defense systems.

Brazil Cannot Modernize Own Leopard 1 Tanks Because Spare Parts Now Go to Ukraine
High demand for spare parts for these tanks makes the Brazilian military worried about the fate of its Leopard 1A5BR fleet

Brazil has postponed "indefinitely" the implementation of the modernization project for its Leopard 1A5BR main battle tanks. The official notice has been published on all media of the Command for Logistics (COLOG) of the Brazilian Army.
The upgrade project is at risk due to the "high demand for parts to armored vehicles in the international market" caused by the military aid sent to Ukraine after the russian invasion, quoted from Tecnologia & Defesa publication.

West’s support of Kiev violates right of Crimea, Donbass for self-determination – Lavrov
Western diplomats and politicians “turn a blind eye” to the norm of international law “in an effort to reduce the entire background and essence of what is happening to the inadmissibility of violating territorial integrity,” noted the Russian Foreign Minister

UNITED NATIONS, September 20. /TASS/. The Kiev regime can’t represent the residents of Crimea and Donbass, so by supporting Kiev the West violates the right of these regions for self-determination, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine.

"The unconditional support in Western capitals for the actions of the criminal Kiev regime is nothing else but a violation of the principle of self-determination [in relation to Crimea and Donbass], which follows a gross interference in internal affairs," he said.

Referring to the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, which is enshrined in the UN Charter, the minister said, "Western diplomats and politicians turn a blind eye to this most important norm of international law, when it comes to Ukraine, in an attempt to reduce the underlying reasons and essence of what is happening to the inadmissibility of violating territorial integrity."

He said that the 1970 UN Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States, adopted unanimously, in accordance with the UN Charter, enshrines that the principle of respect for territorial integrity is applicable to "states that observe in their actions the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples <...> and as a consequence have governments representing <...> all the people living on a given territory."

"It is beyond argument that the Ukrainian neo-Nazis that seized power in Kiev as a result of a coup did not represent the population of Crimea and Donbass," Lavrov said. nod.gif

NATO Nation Poland Threatens Ukraine Amid Russia's War; 'Will Stop Sending Weapons If...'

Tensions between NATO nation Poland and Ukraine continue to simmer over grain imports amid Russia's war. Now, President Andrzej Duda issued a veiled threat to Ukraine on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session. Duda said Kyiv should not forget the crucial role Poland plays in Western military aid to Ukraine. This after Kyiv sued Poland for embargo on imports of Ukrainian grain. Watch for more details.

NATO Nation Loses Cool On Ukraine; Poland Summons Envoy Over Zelensky Remarks | Kyiv Responds

Ukraine has urged Poland to adopt a proactive approach to resolve the grain issue. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has asked the NATO nation to "set its emotions aside". It clarified that Ukraine has offered Poland a constructive path to resolve the grain issue. This comes after Poland summoned Ukraine's ambassador over its President's comments.

Ukraine starts losing allies in West, senior lawmaker says
According to LDPR leader Leonid Slutsky, EU countries occupy increasingly lower positions in the economic rankings compared to states oriented towards BRICS

MOSCOW, September 20. /TASS/. Ukraine is starting to lose allies in the West against the backdrop of huge expenditure on support for the Kiev regime and obvious collapse of the ‘anti-Russia’ project, Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and leader of the LDPR party, opined.

"In the wake of an increasingly evident collapse of the ‘anti-Russia’ project, Kiev is starting to lose allies <…> [Polish] President [Andrzej] Duda refused to meet with [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and compared Ukraine to a drowning person capable of pulling others down into the maelstrom," Slutsky wrote on his Telegram channel.

"The more time goes by, the more European bureaucrats leave for their ‘apartments’, as they have begun to realize how much it costs their countries and them personally to support Zelensky and propagate aggressive Russophobia," the politician said.

According to Slutsky, the EU members are being economically ranked lower and lower compared to the BRICS-oriented nations.

The meeting between the Ukrainian and Polish presidents, which was expected to be held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, has not been arranged yet, Marcin Przydacz, Secretary of State in Duda’s office and head of the International Policy Bureau, said on Polish television. The Rzeczpospolita newspaper previously reported that the meeting between Duda and Zelensky had been cancelled. The newspaper believes that the talks might be of particular importance against the backdrop of the embargo on Ukrainian grain supplies.

On September 15, the European Commission ruled not to extend its ban on imports of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine, but demanded that Kiev submit a plan of action to avoid market distortions in EU countries. After that, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia announced their own unilateral bans on Ukrainian grain imports. In response, Kiev filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization. When commenting to journalists on the unilateral ban on Ukrainian grain imports, the Polish president said that Kiev was acting like a drowning person, desperately clinging to everything available. Duda pointed out that Warsaw had the right to protect itself from potential harm.

Poland no longer sends weapons to Ukraine – PM
The head of the Polish government, Mateusz Morawiecki, said that Warsaw itself is arming itself with “the most modern weapons”

MOSCOW, September 20. /TASS/. Poland is no longer delivering any weapons to Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a televised interview with the Polsat channel.

When asked about whether Poland still provides military support for Kiev, he said that "Poland is no longer sending any weapons to Ukraine."

"We are arming ourselves with state-of-the-art weapons," Morawiecki said. thumbsup.gif

US fails to get Zelensky to negotiate with Russia
Even if he extracts more money from Congress this may be the last time; patience in Washington is frayed

A Ukrainian cemetery with recently buried war dead. Image: Reports say that Ukraine is losing more than 1,000 men a day – sometimes close to 2,000 – with little to show for it. shakehead.gif

Washington and some NATO partners made a strong effort to see if Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky could be put on a peace track with Russia. The effort failed, and Zelensky’s visit to the UN and Washington is aimed at creating support to continue the war – in particular, achieving a commitment from Congress to approve another $24.9 billion in assistance and new weapons for Ukraine’s arsenal.

The House of Representatives, where all money bills must originate, is struggling at the moment over a continuing resolution (CR) to keep federal funding going. The $24.9 billion for Ukraine is not in any proposed CR, at least so far.

The Biden administration Ukraine request breaks down to $13.1 billion for military assistance; $8.5 billion allegedly for humanitarian assistance; and $2.3 billion for “financing and to catalyze donors through the World Bank,” whatever that means.

Just before leaving Kyiv, Zelensky fired six deputy defense ministers, alleging corruption. His action was designed to backstop the Biden administration which is accused of providing money with no strings to Ukraine, much of which disappears. The administration has blocked any auditing of money for Ukraine.

In the past it was the United States that opposed any peace process, but that opposition was before US and NATO weapons’ arsenals were emptied and before the attempt to overthrow Vladimir Putin failed. Trying to compensate, Washington and NATO armed up Ukraine to break through Russian defenses.

A real breakthrough did not happen, and Ukraine chewed up most of its strategic reserves. Two important brigades, the 25th Air Mobile and the 82nd Air Assault, lost so many men and so much equipment on the Zaporozhye front, much of it supplied by NATO, that they became combat-ineffective and were withdrawn.

The Ukrainian offensive continues to grind on, consuming more equipment and manpower. Reports say that Ukraine is losing more than 1,000 men a day – sometimes close to 2,000 – with little to show for it. The US and some of its NATO partners let it be known they didn’t approve of Ukraine’s military tactics, although for the most part the tactics were built around NATO computer simulations and massive intelligence support.

Just about everyone (China, Brazil, the Pope, South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, Congo-Brazzaville, Comoros, Zambia, Uganda, Denmark, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia) who can offer a peace plan has done so or offered to mediate (Israel, Denmark, Türkiye). A few of these made initial progress, negotiations led by Türkiye and Israel.

Ukraine’s official position has the following key elements:

1. Ukraine will not negotiate with Vladimir Putin, but apparently will talk to Russians sometimes. This is supported by a Ukrainian Decree, signed into law by Zelensky.

2. Ukraine will not surrender any territory under any circumstances. This applies to Crimea and the Donbass although in earlier negotiations Crimea was on the table.

3. Ukraine demands that all Russian troops leave Ukrainian territory and that war criminals, including Putin, be put on trial.

4. Ukraine demands security guarantees from NATO or membership in NATO. It also demands membership in the European Union, but EU membership has run into roadblocks. The US allegedly is “working on” security guarantees, but the effort appears stalled or paused.

Meanwhile Ukraine is demanding long-range weapons to attack Russian territory. The latest request is for ATACMS (MGM-140), a tactical ground-launched ballistic missile with a range of 300 km and for the German-Swedish Taurus (KEPD-350) air-launched cruise missile with a range of 500 km. Taurus would augment Stormshadow, already in Ukraine’s inventory and adapted to the Su-24.

Neither the US in the case of ATACMS or Germany in the case of Taurus has agreed to supply them, at least not yet. However, Victoria Nuland, the Deputy Secretary of State, has been pushing to bring the war increasingly to high value targets inside Russia. If she wins the internal debate, ATACMS will go to Ukraine.

All of this appears to be influencing Russia’s war objectives. Most of the fighting focuses on Russia’s defending territory in Donbas, Zaphorize, Kherson region and Crimea. But Russian leaders are talking more and more about replacing the Ukrainian government and expanding the war to key cities such as Odesa. To do that Russia would have to mobilize more forces and backstop with more equipment, which may stretch it too far.

On the other hand, any war expansion would be daunting for Ukraine, now that it is low on manpower and supplies. How resilient the current government in Ukraine is, no one knows. How many front-line troops Ukraine can commit to the war front is not clear.

There is also growing unhappiness in the United States with continuing the war. Objectively the war has reinforced the China-Russia alliance and drained military resources, leaving the US at a disadvantage in Europe and in Asia.

A good example is HIMARS. The US has delayed supplying HIMARS to Taiwan, which needs the system. Even the Marine operators on Okinawa are husbanding what HIMARS rounds they have. It will take time to have enough HIMARS to support our allies, but if Ukraine keeps throwing them at the Russians there will be few for others.

Meanwhile, many other arms deliveries to Taiwan are delayed because of Ukraine. The scheduled arrival of 155mm howitzers, for example, has been delayed for at least a year.

Zelensky may persuade Congress to ante up more money for the war. But this could also be his last hurrah. He may get a slimmed down package and sent away. It is unlikely he will return. wink3.gif
