3/ BARS was created in 2021 with the promise that "the Russian Army offers you a unique opportunity to realize your ambitions, show your skills... see the diverse, stunningly beautiful landscapes of our country." It was promoted as a reserve force with occasional exercises.

4/ The invasion of Ukraine came as a shock to many of the approximately 20,000 BARS personnel, who found that the few thousand extra rubles they were earning monthly for their membership now obligated them to go and fight in Ukraine.

5/ BARS units played a key role in the summer of 2022, prior to the September mobilisation, at a point when Russia faced severe manpower shortages due to its heavy losses earlier in the invasion. Hundreds of Rosneft staff have fought as part of BARS.

6/ However, they have had a difficult time in the war. Many are in their 40s and 50s and were given little choice about joining BARS in the first place. Rosneft was given a quota for how many employees were to be recruited.

Following last week's reported losses of several Russian SA-21 long range Surface to Air Missile (SAM) systems, new analysis suggests that to maintain coverage over Ukraine, Russia will likely need to reallocate SAMs which are routinely protecting distant parts of Russia.

Russia's premier long-range SAMs, such as SA-21, are capable of engaging targets at ranges of up to 400km. Positioned at strategically important locations, as well as along Russia’s borders, removing systems would almost certainly weaken Russia's air defence posture on its peripheries.

The reallocation of strategic air defence assets would further demonstrate how the Ukraine conflict continues to overextend Russia’s military and strains its ability to retain baseline defences across its vast area.

The governor of the Kursk region, Roman Starovoyt, announced an alleged attack by Ukrainian drones on a butter factory in the city of Sudzha. Russia claims that 3 cluster munitions were allegedly dropped. There were no casualties but damage to the enterprise.

Russia’s military hardware and spare part situation is so dire that Moscow is begging all around the world to send them hardware back. This is especially concerning for countries such as India who rely on Russian weapons. They seriously have to fear that they run dry of their own stockpile when Russia is incapable to further supply them.
