In the 90s, Jap companies engineered strong engines using cast iron blocks and basic fuel injection systems. Such stock engines can withstand up to 500-600hp easily with modern standalone ECUs.
Engines such as the 4G63-T, 2JZ, RB26, SR20, B6 and B16 all legendary. Nowadays, everything is made from aluminum, 3 cylinders, a soft turbo, many pesky electronics, and unreliable sensors. |

If there's EMP attack or effects, probably the old diesel land cruiser with lesser electronics will be the survivor that still can ignite engine.
