Tagging this but not replying to you but the OP.
If buying a gift for your sister, don't be a cheapskate and buy 2nd hand. If you are buying for yourself, that should be alright. You wouldn't know the condition of the unit if it's used by another person.
FWIW my 1.5 year old niece likes to grab anything in the house and throw them on the floor despite several warnings. The mobile phone was thrown many times and fortunately it is still in one piece and working. You wouldn't know, after buying a used phone it fails to function within 1 or 2 months. Better buy new even though it's a lower spec model than 2nd hand higher range model where it's a lot riskier.
What you say is true. Just to add, if buying gifts for loved ones, nobody would buy 2nd hand stuff as gifts. It is just not right. Just like in the movies when the boyfriend buys a gift for the girlfriend, the gift will just end up in the dustbin if the person finds out it's not new but used by someone else before. It just shows insincerity from a person when buying a 2nd hand item to be given away as a present, and it won't be appreciated by the recipient not only loved ones but friends as well.If buying a gift for your sister, don't be a cheapskate and buy 2nd hand.
