depends. i bought used pixel 2 for bibik using her own money in 2020 coz she dont know which one is better for little budget and she's loving every second of it till now. of course i disclosed to her it's a used unit but she dont mind. its her 1st phone with whatsapp so she can video call her family in indonesia. the phone is still in use till today.
another case is my wife, i bought her a used Galaxy S10 pink flamingo back in 2021 and she likes it so much and its still in use today. it looks so new till when i go to shop to have glass sp installed, the shop asked 'is this new?'. the phone performed very well as well and last year i bought her 512GB micro sd coz the 128gb internal is getting full with photos of our newborn.
sorry guys i am not rich, i also use a used Galaxy S10e myself. i'm just happy to know that people i know loved the phone given to them despite it being 2nd hand. for me, its important for the phone to be flagship, so can have full features. but not new coz too expensive. so i settle with 2nd hand.
Bro, don't need to apologise. As you have aptly mentioned, as long as your wife or whoever can accept a used phone as a gift, then that is all that matters. For me, I surely will not buy 2nd hand item as gifts, that's for sure. For me, I would surely pick a new lower range phone than 2nd hand higher spec phone. Everyone has their own priorities so it's fine.
I think the most important factor is you notify the person first if he/she is willing to accept a used phone or any 2nd hand item as a gift. I'm sure you can only ask your own family members such as your wife or kids if they can accept 2nd hand stuff but not friends. Gifts should be new and not used.
