if u have dslr then get new lens.

mirrorless is good for lightweight carry but battery life is worse compared to dslr.

need being backup battery, compared to dslr you might not need to worry.

i've used both on separate travelling occasions and the photo quality between the two is negligible. biggest factor is your skills/talents and lens.

Well depends?
I sometimes pakai iPhone 14 Pro, I feel the camera doesn't perform as expected. shakehead.gif

But if ada extra cash, do invest in a proper mirrorless.

my journey
canon dslr > canon mirrorless > fuji x100v.
i know i only use prime lens then end up using fuji x100v as my end tool. mind you i had my canon dslr 500d for around 7 years like that then moved on to canon m6. only last year changed to fuji x100v.

I remember dulu using Nikon F3 damn cangih, one expensive Nikkor 300mm mirrorless for sports event or bird watching, plus a few Sigma and Tamron zooms. 30 years down the road, all antiques. DSLR memang cool and save on films but feel lifeless, skills all up to AI and apps later. Phone cameras getting better but can't depend on miniature lens and digital zooms. Real lenses on DSLRs have different results when you zoom and less noise.

from d750 to z6ii + s lens

for me only 2 pros :
z has better dynamic range
setup is lighter

verdict :
only got mirrorless ego inflated
can't really differentiate the IQ of one to another

meaning :
moolah could have been in better use if not of the MCO

yes upgrade it. the pana 14-42 non-HD version is not sharp at all at any aperture.

get the pana 20mm f1.7 lens or the oly 17mm f1.8.

keep it compact so it can fit in your pocket as a point and shoot camera - great for hiking. brows.gif

If you starting from zero with no collection of DSLR lenses, just go mirrorless. As for whether waste or not, only you can answer. How serious are you with birding? Long telephotos aren’t cheap.

Mirrorless less heavy but requires more battery for that display.

Get more additional battery.

Lens and filter is the one you will have lots of headache

If you starting from zero with no collection of DSLR lenses, just go mirrorless. As for whether waste or not, only you can answer. How serious are you with birding? Long telephotos aren’t cheap.
*
Just amateur only. Wanna get some shot from far. 200mm cant cut it

QUOTE(AthrunIJ @ May 22 2023, 05:14 PM)
Mirrorless less heavy but requires more battery for that display.

Get more additional battery.

Lens and filter is the one you will have lots of headache

Have fun

Depends on your need. mirrorless could offer more advantage for example better AF etc. DSLR lensse can be used on mirrorless using adapters and will offer better AF compared to DSLR body. I migrated from DSLR to mirrorless and would recommend if you think that suits your need.

Portrait is actually best taken with DSLR (or mirrorless) with off-camera flash and maybe reflectors.
Many people say flash photo not good, because they don't know to to use it.

For landscape, unless you need ultra-wide or super-telephoto, phone is good enough.

For absolutely budget definitely a Canon R50 + one of the Canon R telephoto lenses.

They've got 100-400mm, 600mm 800mm, and buying the body + lens will only set you back around RM5000++

All also serves it's purpose. Sometimes phone is the best tool, sometimes the ILC is the best tool, sometimes action cam is the best tool. Nothing is a waste of money if you're happy with the process and/or output. Some people think buying stamps waste money, some people think buy antique pots waste money. If you got the disposable income, make yourself happy and spend! hahaha

QUOTE(bananajoe @ May 22 2023, 03:05 PM)
Ya ya i know that LOL

I wanted to get the 300m range to do birding lol.

But mirrorless is lighter for travel. Just dono if any more benefit than that
*
1. You wrote 300m(etres) but I'm thinking you mean 300mm lens? or your bird is 300 metres away (impossible to fill the frame for an object 300m away [3 football field length] with a reasonable setup)? Either definition and you will end up spending too much or not enough reach. the common birding focal length is around 600mm in 35mm format terms. I think maybe 400mm to 500mm is also doable but it will result in lots of cropping/loss of image quality. Still doable though and acceptable IQ is subjective depending on how you view the images, using denoise/image enhancers, etc...

Weight matters when you're carrying heavy lenses around. Even normal 70-200mm can feel heavy after a while. cannot imagine those 600mm lenses regardless of mirrorless or dslr lenses. If you can pay to shave some grams of your setup, I would say go for it. Gonna cost ya a lot of money though for those shaved grams.

2. IMHO, specifically for birding, I don't think ANY phone camera can do proper birding (unless you photograph birds in cages or zoos or maybe urban pigeons that aren't afraid of humans).. if you're thinking birding as in walking around in a park and you see an egret/kingfisher and you wanna shoot a picture, NO PHONE is acceptable for birding. Would love to see people try though. This alone already justifies the use of an ILC if indeed your goal and passion is birding. I think a camera with merely 200-300mm and cropped to fill the frame will still do better than a phone camera BY A LONG SHOT with its digital zooming to the same equivalent framing.

3. Many youtubers showcase like 'phone vs camera' comparisons. I think for various genres like portraits, landscapes, still life, product, low light, etc.... there could be a case for both ILCs and phones depending on the case usage and skill of the photographer. Especially for top end phones with pro RAW, computational photography, these things are getting pretty good right now for a lot of use cases. Both are great tools in your arsenal. I recommend you check Lee Zavitz channel. he does very good comparisons for portraits this way for a lot of the current phones/ILCs.

I would even add by saying that getting a decent phone (with a decent camera) is just something you'd get anyway even if you don't plan on buying an ILC. so there's no choice factor of either or... merely do you want more toys and enjoy the process and output an ILC can provide that can be very different from what we get with our phones. hahaha. BUY! rclxms.gif

I see you're asking about taking a camera for travels?

I have iPhone 14 Pro Max, Sony A7III with 85mm 1.8, Fujifilm X100V fixed lens mirrorless. The Fuji is very expensive costing more than iPhone but it's very well worth the investment, especially if you're printing the photos. Don't even need to Lightroom coz the film simulations are beyond amazing.

I travel around a lot and for extended duration of time. Let me tell you something, compact and convenience is king.

Here are some UNEDITED shots taken with my Fuji.

When I look back at all the past photos I take, I will always associate phone photos to belong to some era and the pics just feel so artificial.

Nice. Always nice to expand to new genres to keep it fresh.

I see you're already a Nikon shooter. the F-mount 200-500mm always seems to be praised. I see the used prices in carousel going for <RM5k. At least you don't have to switch systems. Those 500mm primes are bonkers in their prices.

The Tamron 150-600mm G2 for Nikon seems to get good reviews too. that's a whole lot cheaper used at around <RM4k in carousel. However, the IQ and AF speed for the Nikon is supposedly far superior

This.
I really don't recommend DSLR as a hobby or starting into photography.
You will regret it when you realize the photo you took in DSLR will need to go through hours of processing which a handphone can do in seconds.
Then you realize you wasted money on something you think you can easily pick up over the weekends.

Me mirrorless user since sony nex days, nex5n to a6000 to a6300... acquired dozens of lenses and gear

For travel, it's just not practical to lug around 5kg worth of gear to take pictures

Until one point just left inside dry box to collect dust, as they say the best camera is the one you carry with you

So, gradually over few years, already sold/gave away

Now smartphone + insta360 shooter, so easy

Ya but xiaomi already did a 1 inch sensor version smartphone

For serious photography, can consider s23 ultra, mi 13 ultra... both these phones can do pretty decent astrophotography and low light

dslr and mirrorless ultimately end in the sensor.
dslr has a mirror in front of the sensor but the mirrorless does not.
why? long ago mana ada tech to put your eye in front of the film. so they had no choice but to put a mirror to see what the film sees.
now people who can look at an electronic viewfinder but still stupidly look through the optical viewfinder to look professional.
seriously its an ego tool for stupid people

those first generation m43 12MP sensor not very good.
the second generation 16MP sensors are better.

panasonic 14-42mm kit lens non-HD very bad.
panasonic 20mm f1.7 prime lens is very good.

i still keep my m43 as point and shoot camera though as they fit in my pocket with pancake lens.
*
yea…but me after mco totally 0 touch…haha.

QUOTE(COOLPINK @ May 22 2023, 04:57 PM)
yes upgrade it. the pana 14-42 non-HD version is not sharp at all at any aperture.

get the pana 20mm f1.7 lens or the oly 17mm f1.8.

keep it compact so it can fit in your pocket as a point and shoot camera - great for hiking.  brows.gif
*
if size and weight not a problem, sigma art 19mm/30mm/60mm f2.8 also worth to get. sharp image and nice color, only con is the size and weight.
actually i suggest get a 45mm f1.8 for street spy shot, while wideangle use handphone je…

the second generation HD is waaaaay better.

the 12-32mm is also a notable mention asit is optically better and more compact.

its quite rare to find and u might want to check it out too it you can find it.

This.
I really don't recommend DSLR as a hobby or starting into photography.
You will regret it when you realize the photo you took in DSLR will need to go through hours of processing which a handphone can do in seconds.
Then you realize you wasted money on something you think you can easily pick up over the weekends.

im still keeping my ancient e-pl1 12mp m43.

if you pair it with a good prime lens its still takes better photos than phone.
just shoot raw and post process it.

the good thing about my e-pl1 is it is my go to camera for hiking bcs its compact and its already old i dun really have to take care of it.
rain or dirt? no problem.
scratch or dent? dun care.
drop over a cliff or into a ravine? just forget about it.

i cant say the same if i should get a xt4, a6500 or canon rp for hiking.

Sony RX100 VII or i should wait for Iphone 15 Pro Max with 6x zoom Periscope camera?
i was thinking to go into smartphone-graphy because well, it is easy to use whatever camera that you have with you NOW, instantly take beautiful photos. can do minor edit on phone later or Lightroom, etc.

but i am really interested in sony rx100 24-200mm telephoto zoom capability though.

sony not making rx100 mark VIII anytime soon?

If just for uploading to social media, phone camera lah

But a camera will still give better quality photos simply because the objective lens is way larger than a phone camera lens + the image sensor is larger than phone camera. Camera photos can be printed to large format unlike phone cameras. One thing I hate about phone camera is the shutter lag + somewhat slow autofocus.

Would gravitate towards mirrorless. Old DSLR lenses can be fitted on with adapter.

(Note: have stopped using my Canon 60D for years now. Today mostly shoot my cats with phone camera & very rarely travel to shoot photos.)
