As an old-time programmer, no longer in job industry, I don't know what can I contribute to the coding world.... Yes, I built some hobby projects, but that are not useful. Any suggestion?

Maybe I should improve my reverse-engineering skill, and try some Flare-On challenge. drool.gif

Personal opinion :
Why people think "that" software is useful ?
Or what kind of software make people think it is useful ?

Because they use that software to do something.

Make something that people will use / willing to use.

P/S : You may look into play store to get some idea.

I believe most programmer hate people RE their product.

As more cloud processing,
RE become find web server / api leakage, rather than app weakness.

Some software are designed to download and update binary yearly,
this make RE meaningless.

Interesting points. I think certain RE is targeting threat actor's malware, not programmer's products.... Yes, once the software is fixed or obsolete, the exploit became meaningless, but exploit helps grow the software to become more mature and stable.

RE is a lot more common than you'd think, outside of "security".

We need to do it to support dang legacy products and projects.

Good reminder, now I remember people reverse-engineer legacy products and projects because source code is no longer available.

Beside doing software for other people (actually is for money),
What software we have done for ourselves ?

For some legacy products / software,
It is "not that hard" to redo with new tools,
If the money is right.

There was a time that people tried to keep their dos (winxp ara too) software,
Many support company either mark extreme high price or refuse to support,
Just let the system die and force the users to change.

Can't remember how many legacy products we killed,
and replace with not so fit products,
but this solve the problems.

Good question.

I have to admit that sometimes programmers do program for own use / convenience first, then others people will only then start using it.

One example on GitHub (other people repo):

Nice try importsort.
This is really a personal use tool.

Some people knew what kind of function they need,
So they will look for which dll to imports, parameters to prepare, when and how to use it.

Or even create a lot of small projects to test these imports as future reference. (self documentation)

Rather than guessing from function name without description of how to use.

Just a quick question for myself,
If using dot net, we don't need to do this, and it is cross platform.

It is OK to stop using tools that have no longer update.

Put more effort on software performance and usability,
rather than compatible, bugs and security issues.
