As an old-time programmer, no longer in job industry, I don't know what can I contribute to the coding world.... Yes, I built some hobby projects, but that are not useful. Any suggestion?

QUOTE(MatQuasar @ Sep 28 2023, 02:54 PM) As an old-time programmer, no longer in job industry, I don't know what can I contribute to the coding world.... Yes, I built some hobby projects, but that are not useful. Any suggestion? Maybe I should improve my reverse-engineering skill, and try some Flare-On challenge.

QUOTE(flashang @ Sep 28 2023, 11:29 PM) I believe most programmer hate people RE their product. As more cloud processing, RE become find web server / api leakage, rather than app weakness. Some software are designed to download and update binary yearly, this make RE meaningless. Interesting points. I think certain RE is targeting threat actor's malware, not programmer's products.... Yes, once the software is fixed or obsolete, the exploit became meaningless, but exploit helps grow the software to become more mature and stable.

QUOTE(flashang @ Sep 28 2023, 11:10 PM) Personal opinion : Why people think "that" software is useful ? Or what kind of software make people think it is useful ? Because they use that software to do something. Make something that people will use / willing to use.P/S : You may look into play store to get some idea. I got different feedback on different forum. I asked in Projects and Ideas > Is it worth it to do a PE import table dumper?

QUOTE(angch @ Sep 29 2023, 10:32 AM) RE is a lot more common than you'd think, outside of "security". We need to do it to support dang legacy products and projects. Good reminder, now I remember people reverse-engineer legacy products and projects because source code is no longer available.

QUOTE(flashang @ Sep 29 2023, 06:32 PM) Beside doing software for other people (actually is for money), What software we have done for ourselves ? Good question. I have to admit that sometimes programmers do program for own use / convenience first, then others people will only then start using it. One example on GitHub (other people repo):

Another bad fate for VBScript. RIP. Microsoft says VBScript will be ripped from Windows in future release https://www.theregister.com/2023/10/10/micr...script_will_be/
