The strong smell came from candlenut or kemiri. Already tried many variants of these package version of laksa Sarawak paste to me they all have no much difference with restaurants or shops style gravy version. Just differs between level of spiciness and the amount of belacan they added.
My mother from Klang she is the only one in our family who dislike laksa Sarawak she said she hates the smell of the spices in gravy.

Which I admitted really strong for those who aren't used to or fan of it. But yes like others said here no where in the world the one I ate has curry flavour or similar to curry laksa gravy any sort of that thing. Those who said it memang bodoh la haven't tasted the actual laksa Sarawak.

but the one in Thompson Corner Tabuan Jaya does taste like curry a bit.

But TS should scald in Laksa broth.

The ingredients are different curry mee got tauhu Pok, and seeham, Sarawak laksa got shredded egg and taugeh and whole prawn.

Broth is different although both is about 80 percent the same. Sarawak laksa not so thick and not so oily.

Both nice in its own way. Curry mee makes u more sleepy after makan.

I dont mind the smell.. but yea I think all the paste taste quite the same and no where near the same as curry lol.

the meehoon is the thick type. and its a bit sour than normal laksa.

Its Sarawak Laksa. i know what curry mee tasted like.

When i am in KL i eat Curry Mee, When i am in Sarawak i ear Sarawak Laksa.

AFAIK, curry meehoon is a delightful combination of indian spices, hokkien meehoon, fish cake, tofu pok and other optional meats.

I've had sarawak laksa in kuching and other places. It's definitely not curry meehoon....but if u guys wanna fight over it, go ahead and enjoy!
