 BREAKING: OPR increased to 3% unexpectedly, High inflation likely to come soon

At its meeting today, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Bank Negara Malaysia decided to increase the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) by 25 basis points to 3.00 percent. The ceiling and floor rates of the corridor of the OPR are correspondingly increased to 3.25 percent and 2.75 percent, respectively.

The global economy continues to be driven by resilient domestic demand supported by strong labour market conditions, and a stronger-than-expected rebound of China’s economy. Nevertheless, the global economy continues to be weighed down by elevated cost pressures and higher interest rates. Headline inflation continued to moderate, but core inflation has persisted above historical averages. For most central banks, the monetary policy stance is likely to remain tight. The growth outlook remains subject to downside risks, mainly from an escalation of geopolitical tensions, higher-than-anticipated inflation outturns, and a sharp tightening in financial market conditions including from further stress in the banking sector.

For the Malaysian economy, latest developments point towards further expansion in economic activity in the first quarter of 2023 after the strong performance in 2022. While exports are expected to moderate, growth in 2023 will be driven by domestic demand. Household spending remains resilient, underpinned by better labour market conditions as unemployment continues to decline to pre-pandemic levels. The pickup in tourist arrivals is expected to lift tourism-related activities. Further progress of multi-year infrastructure projects will support investment activity. Domestic financial conditions also remain conducive to financial intermediation, with no signs of excessive tightening affecting consumption and investment activities. Risks to the domestic growth outlook are relatively balanced. Upside risks mainly emanate from domestic factors such as stronger-than-expected tourism activity and implementation of projects including those from the re-tabled Budget 2023, while downside risks stem from weaker-than-expected global growth and more volatile global financial market conditions.

As expected, headline inflation trended lower in recent months on account of moderating cost factors. Both headline and core inflation are expected to moderate over the course of 2023, averaging between 2.8% – 3.8%. However, core inflation will remain at elevated levels amid firm demand conditions. Existing price controls and fuel subsidies will continue to partly contain the extent of upward pressures to inflation. The balance of risk to the inflation outlook is tilted to the upside and remains highly subject to any changes to domestic policy including on subsidies and price controls, financial market developments, as well as global commodity prices.

With the domestic growth prospects remaining resilient, the MPC judges that it is timely to further normalise the degree of monetary accommodation. With this decision, the MPC has withdrawn the monetary stimulus intended to address the COVID-19 crisis in promoting economic recovery. In light of the continued strength of the Malaysian economy, the MPC also recognises the need to ensure that the stance of monetary policy is appropriate to prevent the risk of future financial imbalances. At the current level, the monetary policy stance is slightly accommodative and remains supportive of the economy. The MPC will continue to ensure that the monetary policy stance remains consistent with the outlook of domestic inflation and growth.

the "penalty" is always forfeited interest
most FD will say, if tenure is 1 year, u withdraw before 1 year, u get ur principal only. no interest at all

some will say if u put at least 3 month and withraw then they will prorate according to the board interest rate (meaning not the 4% promo interest rate, maybe the board interest rate is something not exciting like 2% ) . at leats theres something. but generally expect none or lower than savings account interest.


btw i see got some FD promo macam cheebuy, ask ppl to put in current account/savings account ( CASA) for each 1k then can put in FD 10k (konon at high interest say 4.1% while others are maybe 3.8 without this CASA term%)
if withdraw CASA means terminate FD
isnt that sohai? it means the effective interest rate is lower than whatever is published. e.g instead of getting 4.1% for 50k , u actually have to factor in the 5k you have to put in CASA.


thats why i told coffeedude he can always withdraw if he alrdy put in some FD
unlike me, procrastinate till tertido on 30 april after work. then open eyes alrdy 0030 1st may, the FD promo gone (bank FD promo usually last till end of month only) cb, i should have put in earlier...if anything better comes, i can always terminate the FD and put in the new one

different countries diff laws with pro and cons I guess

the one with sixty day interest penalty is in US, which means if you withdraw before sixty day (like even after one week) you still end up paying 60 days interest (ie you lose money).

THe benefit is...it is more fair to those who put in one year FD and withdraw after 11 months, at least you still get 9 months interest.

So it really benefits those in rapid rising interest rate enviroment like in the US now.

They are businessman eventually, over subsidised and controlling on private enterprises will make things worst.

Subsidy too much, too long and u guys already forgot the actual prices of the commodities.
Inflation because of the currency.

Should have fix the currency, not the other way around to subsidy, and bring up the wages.

I remember I was a very happy kid on my birthday because I can only eat McD like once a year. Because it's mahal and bill can come out to like RM 50 whole family. Our usual meal was either cooking at home or ta pau cheap hawker so my parents managed to save for our education and family's future. Even 98 crisis, when the interest rate was crazy, my dad felt the pinch but managed to pull tho no issue because of our lifestyle.

Nowadays ppl, if 1 week don't dine out can die. Have to go cafe la, Starbucks la, have to buy nice car la but OPR raise 25 basis points, cry mother cry father.

that is gohmen sector.
private sector, especially if u're blue collar at that time, grind until 8~10pm.
sometimes weekends & holiday also work side job or take the opportunity for OT pay.

different is, last time husband grind like that, wife can either be housewife or do small part time job (like sewing, kids day care, etc...)
then can still afford to buy house, buy car, & raise 4-5 kids.

nowadays is both husband & wife work full time job, need join loan to afford house, car is a must, & usually can afford 1-2 kids only.

because owner house installment interest went up by 25bps ma

if he or she pinjam loan 800k

before that 3.9% = RM3.4k
now 25bps
4.15% = rm3.6k lor laugh.gif

if owner dont want to self makan ..just pass it down to tenant

in be4 u x suka , u keluar

for instance those who bought house in 2000, have enjoyed low interest rates for 23 years, then another 12 years to go to own the house

do you want to rent for 35 years then at end of rent no ownership of house?

actually. i dont get what's all the hoo-haa tbh...?

i rented my unit before covid started at X rate in 2019.
then when covid came, during that time tenant ask me to reduce rent slightly. twice actually, so changed to Y rate for a while in 2020/2021 then went to Z rate as well in late 2021.

then start this year 2023 both agree to go back to X rate from Z rate.. and for now will be maintaining at X rate even with this new OPR.

because current OPR is same as when i first start rented out, so basically we are back to square one at X rate.. so no need for rent increment..


same thing happen to me as well with the place im staying at where im renting.. literally same thing except now im in the renter position.

basically my rent still the same with 2019 rent.. it got reduced once in 2021, but start of 2023 increase back to the original rent which is same with 2019..


are people taking advantage to hike rent up kaw2 these days when in reality we are just back to 2019 rates...?
