Hi guys, need some advise on the speeds I'm getting as I recently upgrade to 300Mbps Fibre internet with Maxis Fibre. Wanted to switch to Celcom but Maxis gave me a nice discount to stay with them.

I'm very well-versed with computers however networking is an area where I'm very much lacking in knowledge.

Now my current equipment (provided by Maxis) is a Nokia G-240GE for the modem and a TP-Link Archer C5v for the router.

As an example from the speed tests I have done using Maxis Speed Test (from KL area to Subang Jaya), I'm getting around 222Mbps for Download and 54Mbps for upload using 5ghz wifi connection.

I'm generally ok with the speed (of course if there are ways to maximize it without needing to change equipment, preferably, pls advise) and I can check back with Maxis later.

However my big issue is with the pc in my work room. I'm using a TP-Link AV1300 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Kit which is supposedly rated at 1,300Mbps for a cabled "ethernet" connection.

Connection is from the Archer router via ethernet cable to the TP-Link AV1300 which is then connected to a home electrical socket. Then another TP-Link AV1300, plugged into a socket near my work pc, connects to my work pc via ethernet cable to complete the connection.

The connection shown in my work PC is ethernet but connected via the 2.4ghz connection hence I'm only getting around 45-50Mbps download and around 35Mbps upload max.

Can anyone advise how can I change the connection to 5ghz or get close to the rated 300Mbps of my connection?

Any help is much appreciated.

Why the work PC is connected with ethernet but your connection is still 2.4ghz? Try turn off the WIFI so that your pc utilising the ethernet instead?

Connecting to powerline rarely reaches to the desired speed, due to disturbance and noise in the line.

Best bandwidth is via direct cable
Next best is mesh wifi

My work pc doesn't have wifi connection. It's a desktop with ethernet connection only.

go google Powerline Passthrough.
There is 1 thousand reason WHY Ethernet Cable is the Best Choice.
got Interference.. i am not sure now, but i gave up years ago.

My Setup Preference :
LAN Cable > Optimized Wifi Setup > Nothing.

For Your Case.

I switched from Maxis to Celcom as Celcom give me lower monthly fees together with my mobile phone plan.

And Celcom provided me a new and much better router. That Maxis-provided TP-Link Archer C5v router is a shitty device. Sometimes it restarted by itself or no connection to internet even thou the modem shows no error red light.

I did asked Maxis if I renewed my acct can they provide me with a new router, they say NO.

I was kinda confused as well regarding the 2.4ghz text showing up as well but I wasn't bothered as previously I was using a 30Mbps connection.

Here's a screenshot for your reference.

I think that is only a SSID name. The icon indeed is showing that the PC is using ethernet.
As others mentioned, the powerline adapter is really dependent on your house wiring condition.
Another alternative is to get a strong 5ghz wifi adapter for your desktop. If it has latency/signal issue then try adding a wifi booster in between the work pc and the maxis router. Both will cause extra money though unfortunately.

Edit: 5ghz instead of 5g

Looks like your problem is due to powerline.
You either get a 5ghz wifi receiver (not cheap one) or just use ethernet cable.

Try a different socket for the powerline adapter. The 2 adapters work best if on the same phase

Power line interference. Can be small possibility of using cat4 Lan cables also can try change both since is easy fix. Might be mistakenly use old cable.

Power line always degrades the speed. Especially if your power cables are old. Do not expect direct Ethernet quality if running through power line.

In windows it doesn't matter. If you don't change auto metric setting it will prioritize wired connection first anyway.
